On Shangri-la
Anika left to do the run to the other ships and Bethany finished up the paperwork she'd been doing then made a few calls to some of the staff who'd called in to say they couldn't do their shifts. Running the bars and restaurants that were always open was probably the most challenging of all her roles, as the concept of day and night was so varied amongst the guests. Over the eight years Shangri-la had been operating it had always provided full facilities any time of any guests' night or day.
And to keep the staff happy and willing she made sure she gave them the time off they needed, but that they knew she was on top of all the situations. It had been a very different situation for the first year or so of the 'exodus', with the tension and struggles each and every individual had gone through as they either found out their family and homes were gone, or were reunited friends and family that had miraculously managed to be rescued. Sometimes in the confusion it had taken many many months before some had realised they hadn't lost every living soul they knew, and the celebrations, be they small and private, or large and loud had always brought a certain glow to the individuals involved.
So many had lost everything, in particular her staff. Their families were scattered across all of the 12 Colonies, and it had been a trying time, waiting and watching as word slowly trickled through about what had eventuated on their home planet. Even now there was still uncertainty about some of the planets they hadn't managed to get to when trying to gather the survivors, and those were the hardest to cope with. But as it does time had slowly helped soften the edges of the pain of loss, and with nothing else to look to, she turned their attentions to what they had in each other, and caring for the guests they had. So each of her staff had become like a family member to the other, and sometimes as in all families, disagreements arose and friction needed to be smoothed over.
Once she'd finished she stood, checking herself in the mirror briefly and head out to do her rounds of the restaurants and bars first, then the gardens. As she exited the kitchen of one of the restaurants she heard a crash and cry and hurried over to see what had happened.
