The smell. Jesus Christ, the smell! It was stinging his sinuses, burning the inside of his nose and making him want to claw at his face. It had been better inside the Barracks he realised with some bitter amusement. Somehow the mingling scents of body odour, dirty clothes, sweat and old linen was much more appealing after he stepped out into what he guessed was the closest thing to a ‘street’ here on Knowhere. He cupped a hand to his nose and mouth instinctively, but that was as effective as catching smoke with his fingertips and he quickly gave up.
There were things he’d never smelt before mixing with perspiration, filth, rust and ozone. Underneath all of it was the old, bitter tang of ancient alien brain matter and cerebral spinal fluid that Matt could detect despite the fact that the mines were so far away. Matt couldn’t stop himself from picking out each layer of the alien air. At least in New York he could force himself to focus past the urine, vomit and trash on the street. Here everything was new and different and he needed to notice each part now so that he could notice if something changed later. That didn’t make it easier.
Inside The Dispatch was better, though at this point Matt felt like the scent of Knowhere had permeated into his pores. Even if he were to drop straight back into the East River right that moment he doubted he’d ever get the smell well and truly off his skin. Thankfully something cut through the haze of his overwhelmed senses like a knife, and Matt’s head turned towards it like a flower chasing the sunlight.
Cherry. A familiar scent and a familiar fluttering heartbeat.
“Karen?”
