Mod Post
It's come to our attention that a person and their sockpuppet account have been taking icons without credit and posting them to their own icon community. They've been banned from this community, since our rules prohibit such behavior. Personally, most (if not all) of my posts are credit optional, however, that doesn't mean that other people who post here can't request credit for their icons nor does it mean that icons can be reposted (credit or not) without notifying the maker and getting their consent. While some claim that icons are "just a crop job," that often is not the case, and aside from that argument, it's extremely bad netiquette to repost without permission and/or fail to credit a maker who requests it. Also, some people do use their original photography to make their icons, which would be considered copyright infringement.

With that said, would you like this community to become Friends-Only? People would need to join in order to see icons, and anyone (aside from those who've been banned) is welcome to join, no need for moderator approval. If you have any other comments or concerns, please let me know.

The Rules

1. Absolutely NO depictions of violence against cats, kittens, or any other animal and doing so will result in banning.

2. Any feline (housecat, tiger, bobcat, etc.), whether drawn or photographed, is welcome here. Sexually explicit icons of Furries should be posted elsewhere, such as [info]nsfw_icons (you must be 18 or older to apply for membership).

3. You may display up to three teaser icons, one colorbar, or a small graphic before your LJ cut. If you're not sure how to make an LJ cut, please visit this entry in the IJ FAQ.

4. You may request or take requests for cat and kitten icons, banners, and graphics.

5. Do not claim another's work as your own. Do not repost icons elsewhere without the icon maker's permission. If you do it and either the graphics maker reports it or I discover it on my own, you will lose community access be banned.

6. Please keep your comments courteous and polite. If an icon maker has asked for a critique or feedback, you may provide constructive criticism. Bashing or flaming will not be tolerated.

7. You may provide a link to your own journal or community for additional icons, but text-only promotions for other communities should be posted to [info]asylum_promo.

8. You may use images from Google, cat and kitten sites, your own cat and so on, but if a user posts images of their own pets and you use it for icons or other graphics, please give them the courtesy of letting them know you've taken it.

9. Unless otherwise noted by the maker, please credit them for their work.

10. Hotlinking is BAD. And will get you banned!

11. Any questions, just ask and have fun!

I do not make icons personally, but I am very appreciative of those who can - & who have the generosity of spirit to post them for the use of others. I always try to credit the maker (& artist if applicable) in keywords & comments, as I consider it is the least I can do as a gesture of thanks & appreciation. Lacking all technical expertise in icon-making, I have no idea what may be involved in the making of icons - it seems like magic to me!

If it is the only way that people can be courteous enough to acknowledge the work of others, then by all means - let this become a friends only asylum.

*nod* One vote for Friends-Only!

One of the other things that people who swipe, post, and don't credit realize is that credit is also another way for someone to find more of the same type of icon too, which I'd (oops) forgotten to put in my post. Unfortunately, I doubt the person banned from here will likely change their ways.

Good point about being able to find more icons they like through checking the original maker!

Perhaps the person will change their ways if enough asylums ban the individual?

What on earth motivates such people? I have no artistic ability at all, so I'm deeply appreciative of all your work. This is your community, so whatever you do with it, I certainly support.

Alas, no idea and I doubt that they even realize how it reflects back on them.

And [info]kitty_icons is for everyone here, so I figured that I'd get some other opinions before making it Friends-Only without some sort of request post or announcement.

And thank you!

If FLOCK is the only way to protect the icons created by members of this community then I say GO FOR IT! It is sad that such percautions are necessary but I've leanrt that if you don't want something stolen - or to receive miminumal to no flak - then FLOCK is the way to go.

So Friends Lock is fine by me!

And even if an icon is just a crop job, they are kindly invited to crop their own. Or else to nod in the general direction of the person who did the few mouseclicks they don't want to make for some reason.

One vote for friendslock.

I always try to credit. I like visiting asylums like this one because I have learned I don't have the skills to make nice icons.

If needed, go ahead and flock

Speaking as a mod in my own community, I vote for friendslocked entries here. It's the best way to control those that are ungrateful and unappreciative of the work others do. And regardless if an icon is a base or not, credit for it should be given. Icon makers have to take the task to search out images, crop them *just so*, and often times clean up/alter an image. Even if it's just considered a 'base', work still goes into it. It really gets under my skin when people are so rude to just take others work and repost them elsewhere.

locked works for me.
I tend to be an icon hoarder, so I have files all sorted by maker name that I never remember to upload & use; I just keep them squirrelled away for my own amusement. For people who are going to use them, it's only right to put the maker's name in the information, out of appreciation for the time spent making the icon and as you have said, so others can find more of their work.

I really hate it when one person decides to spoil the fun for everyone.

I think it would be a shame to flock the comm, as it prevents passing people thinking, "Ooh, that's nice, let's take a closer look...". It's how I found the comm.

But I think I'm in the minority here and will promptly request membership when the comm gets locked.

Yeah, it's pretty sad, isn't it?

What we could try is to fill in some of the spaces in the community's icon spaces, which aren't flocked, and post a link to them on the front page as a "preview" of sorts. I can made a locked announcement in the comm for submissions for icons (and I could stick some of mine in there too) with the warning/understanding that they won't be locked and the person responsible for the reason of this post could still see them.

Also, it will be optional for people to go back and lock older posts, so up until this point they could still see all the icons posts in the community up until this point.
