Kiseki's HMD
Because there's only so much we can address in the regular HMD, we're gonna try out this! With the new AC period coming up, I'm sure many people will soon be swamped in threads, so it seems more appropriate to put this up now while we'll have more time to debate on things.

How does this work? Well, rather than giving crit or commenting to the players or characters, we'll discuss the game mechanics and such! I'll make a few general topics to give us a start, but you can add your own.

You can post anonymously or not, but remember the idea is to keep things civil.

Topics:

- Kiseki as a setting
- Events (& replays)
- Logs
- AC
- HMD
- Apps
- Lists
- Other concerns

... What it says. We've had a huge revamp recently, but if anyone has more suggestions, ideas, or concerns about it, go ahead and say so o/

This is more of a small thing, really, but I think it'd be really helpful to just have a map of the island(s). We used to have one but it's been taken down, but I know it's a loooot easier for me to visualize things if I have, well, visuals and not just descriptions of it.

ACTUALLY I HAVE ANOTHER STUPID QUESTION.

How big are the hotels, anyway? Not the rooms, but the actual buildings. Like, how many stories are there and how many hallways on one floor and how many rooms to a hallway?

Or does it not matter and I just suck? XD

More than for specific event ideas, I want to know what do you think about the events' regularity, the way they're usually done, the liberties we can take with them, etc. Any input's welcome, though, of course.

My thoughts on big events is mostly that... I feel like we spend a lot of time planning out or talking about major upcoming events but nothing actually happening in the end, whether it's because of timing issues or whatever. So people fall back on replaying events more than anything else it seems? Unless an event we talk about in chat happens spur of the moment, we don't have a lot of the events we actually plan beforehand happen.

I do forever love the option of replaying old ones when nothing's going on, of course, but yeah... it can get a little repetitive, especially since we don't add new ones in as often I feel?

Another thing is that I remember a loooooong time ago it was established (maybe I'm remembering wrong though) that event posts would consistently be posted a few days before the event would actually start. I would like this to actually happen more, since while I do love the spur of the moment things, it can feel a little rushed. And again, this would be great for events that actually need planning beforehand--post the event FIRST, then do the planning, so that stuff actually happens! Less "starting right now" and more "starting [specific date or time]" so that we are already committed to it.

I agree with Ana in that I think that more events should happen more often to add to the replay event, because it seems that people have been relying on replaying a lot more than usual.

I also agree with Ana on the post, then plot, then play idea rather than the opposite, since the way we do it now things... really often just kind of fall through or don't happen.

Also, I know that the replay event limit is that it can only last to up to one week, but I think that given the relative pace of our game, it might be more beneficial to extend that time limit? Especially since most people end up going muuuuch longer than a week with them, anyway, and have to backdate or handwave. Especially with things like the de-age event which I fully admit to abusing, orz. Due to timing, it just ends up that people stay teeny as much as a month. So I guess extending the time limit would only be a nominal thing, but at the very least it'll take off the pressure of "oh god, I need to end this event now..." when you otherwise may not be ready, thread-wise, to do so.

I don't think we have nearly enough of these going on. They've shown to be wonderful for random interactions, they're good for the "every-day" sort of situations that'd happen all the time in a setting that's usually calm as this one, and they can be spiced up with events when needed.

I think if we try and make it so that we more-or-less always have at least one big log going on, it'd also make them a lot less intimidating, since then people won't feel they have to spam absolutely all threads from it.

Seconding the anon above. As for timing, maybe there can be a specific time or at least intent for an action log to go on every month? The more specific the better! If a log is specified (I'd even say "restricted") to a certain IC time of the day or a setting that varies every month, it would be less intimidating than an open thing everyone feels the need to spam to every single time and getting each other swamped. This would also encourage more RANDOM, detailed interactions rather than everyone playing with everyone all at once.

Not sure if that makes sense, o r z. Basically just more "smaller" but recurring logs as a possible idea.

First, just to mention since this was recent, I feel like the date change for the AC was a good call for organization if nothing else. Otherwise, I don't really have a lot of criticism about the system in general, really. I like that it's flexible which helps a lot, even if it spans over two months since the game can be prone to dry spells for long times.

One thing I know came up on an AC before, but it would be nice if we had the option of posting WIP threads until the AC officially closes? I understand the reasoning behind entries that don't count after the AC post itself goes up. But since the post IS open for a week, having the chance to finish threads properly for that week until the post is closed might be helpful for those who need a few comments or need to get a hold of someone to help with those comments.

Re: AC

I have a hard time figuring out if the AC is working, half the time. The AC requirements are so, so small (not necessarily a bad thing) and yet so many characters are just not around for those two months and then a few days before the AC post goes up, people are posting up entries. And once those entries are up, they get tagged a bit but otherwise just kind of peter out. Which is okay for the person who posted it because, hurray, they're passing!... but for anyone who might need that thread in order to pass, it can be really disconcerting and frustrating.

And in general I find it annoying just because it just presents as a half-assed thing thrown up in order to pass AC again. I've noticed this for the last few ACs. And it leaves me wondering if the AC is even working and doing what it's supposed to if so many people at the end of the two months are still struggling to get tags in when, really, 2 to 4 threads should not be that difficult to do.

I know that the posts say that the HMD isn't mandatory, but I kind of wish it was... especially since most muns/characters don't have their own separate crit post. So if someone doesn't post to the game crit meme, at all, then there's no way to give that player/character feedback.

I wish there was some way for you, as the mod, to be reviewed before you "app" new people. Not to say that I don't think you can handle your characters, or the amount. And I realize that as mod you get that privilege of not having to app, but at the same time it does seem a little unfair. Especially because lots of apps that Kiseki gets isn't just you deciding if they're in/out, but rather you ask for input from the other muns.

So I'm not saying that you should have to write up an app, but maybe if there was some kind of review board (for lack of a better word) before you picked up new people? Maybe just something as informal as a poll (anonymous or otherwise)?

There should be some sort of limit to how long characters can be put in hiatus without actually leaving or ending up in 'suspended animation'. I figure that most of the time, people're trying to avoid the boring "I'm back" posts, but those aren't strictly necessary, are they? It seems that far too often, players will go into hiatus for weeks or even months, and meanwhile any castmate or close CR has to keep handwaving any interactions. And this happening can encourage character squatting, since people will get used to character A or B never being around.

[info]unluckyflower

I realize this is partly my being horribly OCD on some level, but I get really frustrated when people don't keep their lists updated.

Especially if it means that people will miss another character updating just because they haven't gotten around, or never got around, to adding that journal. Or people will have characters added who were dropped MONTHS ago and yet haven't added anybody new for weeks.

Considering it's not so hard to keep lists updated with the admin console and whatnot... idk, maybe every once in a while have some kind of reminder for people to keep their flists updated? I guess technically the 'add/drop' post is supposed to be that reminder, though...

Since Robin posted above about lists, I must ask what the purpose of requiring /all/ journals to be fully updated is? I understand keeping one updated, but all of them? Including the ones I will never touch to check my f-list?

I am asking as a sincere question, because I don't understand the emphasis on keeping them all perfectly updated when I never use more than one character journal to read others's posts anyway. It seems like a big hassle and a lot of busywork that I don't understand why I'm being made to do something that makes no difference to me or to how I play. I've been playing at Kiseki just fine keeping only the one I actually use updated, adding new characters as they arrive. So perhaps you could explain why this is such a big deal?

Two things! Both of which are fairly minor. (Really, I see no major problems with various game things.)

1. The font on the apps/faq/rules page. Is there possibly any way you can make it bigger? ;~~; I know there's a lot of information and you don't want people to have to scroll forever, but man, I kind of have to press my face against the computer screen to be able to read it and my eyesight isn't great to start with. Obviously, if I'm the only one having an issue with it, you can leave it alone.

2. Regarding the length of the FAQ -- is there any way you'd be able to put headings? Like hmm Application Questions, Character Questions, Setting Questions, etc? I remember I was trying to scroll through and find AC requirements and all the questions started looking the same after awhile. @_@ Obviously, that would bring up the question of what would be lumped where, but I think even one or two could help? IDK you don't have to do this, I just feel like it might help with organization?

Also hi I miss you guys watch me bug you all on plurk.

Moar player plots?
[info]swan_song
2011-10-14 03:45 am UTC (link)
I've brought this up in the past and I know it does happen more than it used to, but I really really want to stress that player plots when the game is quiet are a great way to get interactions going. Look at all the things Andrea does with Koryuu, etc. That's a really great example of shenanigans that spark some life back into the game, and I think I've seen some others of characters organizing certain events and that kind of thing--so just want to encourage everyone to do more of it or put it out there more! Some great upcoming things like the Ken/Gigei dance and Himawari's curse that Robin and Nina posted to the OOC comm over on LJ could use a lot more involvement from everyone to kick off into a good, solid player plot. I don't want to see any one single player trying to do these things by themselves, I guess.

So! Do we need a consistent planning posts for currently on-going player plots maybe? For future plots? Also, if anyone does have ideas for them, pleaseeeee throw them out. /OwOs at everyone

Backtagging
[info]hellhathnofurry
2011-10-14 06:52 pm UTC (link)
Continuing with the thoughts here, 'cause I wanna post this from a personal account rather than the mod one...

It's a little awkward to post this after being scolded for precisely failing at following through with threads, so I'm really really sorry if I sound like a complete hypocrite. But I think the point stands anyway.

Backtagging! We all do it, we all love it, it's usually one of our major selling points...

And yet lately it seems all we do is backtag. Entries get tagged weeks late, threads that're ancient don't get kicked a bit so that they'll develop faster, and I think the end result is that half the game's weighed down by tons and tons of old threads, a lot of which won't go anywhere.

So, what's my point? That maybe we need to try and balance things out a bit more. Tag things more quickly OR simply leave some entries unattended, if it's been too long (particularly when the tag we'd be posting wouldn't be too unique to the post). If we have threads that're really really old and have been super slow for a good while, then try and kick them into having something happen in them (either by doing something on our own or poking the other mun for possible developments!) or simply drop them. Not all threads need to last forever, afterall, and not all of them will work out.

I think this would help the game in general; having less threads going on always encourages new plottings and things happening, people who're less active will be able to catch up more easily, those who have been away can jump back into things more quickly as well, etc.

I think it'd help avoid times like the ones we recently had, where everyone was swamped in threads, and yet the game's f-list had about two entries on it.
