To our neighbors on the second floor: you have my sincere apologies in regards to the noise. I am endeavoring to find the silencing ward to set over the room, but it has been slow going, as you may imagine.

[Charles]

Do you recall what book held the soundproofing? I believed it was in one of the Stratford notebooks, but I can't seem to locate it.

[Wally Clark]
Monty wished me to pass on his regards, and to let you know he's feeling a bit under the weather and has taken to his room for the time being.

[Bellara]
How have things been with you, friend? Our accidental adoption has rather distracted me of late, but also made the matter of simulating night far more pressing, on a personal level. I have been able to trick the little menace with a thick blanket so far, but I worry we're approaching the day she sees through the ruse.

So there's some stuff about Assan that's different but I can't share it. Not because I don't trust you, but he's Davrin's baby, and I promised I wouldn't say some stuff so until he comes by and tells me it's ok just know Assan's probably a unique case. But as for the eating, from what I remember is he'd take Assan out, and just encourage his instincts. Dig up a patch of worms, and just let him go at it until he figured out how to dig himself. Maybe try that? It'd tire her out, for one.

Great! Any time is really good.

I mean it's better then Assan, I'll give you that.

It means Arrow, which I just figured you wouldn't know. Davrin is the worst at naming animals.

Understood, and I appreciate you keeping the confidence of a friend. What I will take from that is I may not have to worry so much about her outgrowing our expectations so quickly. And.. that does seem like a good idea. I had been feeding her more of that canned meatloaf. Perhaps worms would be better for her at this age.

It sounds as though Charles is eager to perform the soundproofing tonight, so perhaps I can stop by tomorrow?

Well, it may be fitting for a flying creature. In my frustration I have also been calling her 'Nugget', which is a form of food made from chickens- another avian creature- in our world.

And thank you for understanding! And probably. No matter how delicate she looks right now, she's still going to grow up and be a hunter, and at least partially wild. You have to let her explore that.

Sounds good! Oh when you do, can you check when it's my turn to cook? I haven't been in the cafeteria to go look at the schedule.

It lacks poetry, is my argument. And I think I get it?

If I'm honest I have more experience with our more untamed creatures, than the domesticated. There were a number of wild things in Hell to account for, and we encounter them frequently enough in our work. I only recently recalled having a pet growing up, and it seems... Distant. It sounds harsh, but her affections have been the more difficult part of her nature to understand.

I would be happy to look, dear, but do you mean to say you haven't left the laboratory in some time? You do need rest, don't you?

I can see how that would be the case. As another friend said, names have power. We're meant to grow into them. Except, not the "joking about my companion becoming food" sort.

So I can't really compare having you know died and gone to Hell, but I do know what it's like to not have pets. My Clan never really encouraged those because of resources, but that's way different. So a lot of words to say you deserve the affections too. You don't have to understand them.

I do, and I will. Soon! I'm fine!

I agree about the names having power part though.

I don't mean it to be a comparison. And it's kind of you to say that. I imagine it was quite hard, having to manage your resources so closely to not even have animal companionship. For what it's worth I'm getting far better at the affection aspect of it all, thanks to Charles.

Please do make it soon. You're doing important work but your health is far more valuable.

It was another part of mythology in our world, that to know someone's full name was to be able to wield power over them. That was where the practice of multiple names came from for us. To have a part that is typically lesser known, for spiritual safety.

Oh neither did I. I'm sorry if it came off that way. And we had halla, but those aren't companions.

I'll take a nap soon, I promise.

Huh, really? See for us, it's mostly what a name says about you. Or it honors you. Some names have power though, but it has to do with what's behind it? Does that make sense?

You didn't, Bellara; that was a reflex, I'm afraid. I [...] previously had a bad habit of dwelling on my past, and discussing it as some sort of discursive 'point'. And what are halla?

I believe it would make us both feel better.

I believe so. Perhaps other than the last part: what powers a name?

Okay I'm realizing halla are really difficult to describe, but they're cloven animals. A bit taller than deer. One of the last gifts from one of our 'gods' and they pull our aravels, basically our houses, but it's very important to us that we don't own them. They're honored companions, not beasts of burden, and we have to ask them to work with us. They also pull us where they want to go. You can, sometimes, ride them but that's trickier. I've never managed.

There's just so much to do.

Intent, I guess? Meaning. Like I'm named after one of my grandmothers, so that's the intent behind my name, recognition and remembrance. And my nickname describes me.

They sound magnificent. And I think I like that view of the whole ordeal more than how our culture treated animals. Especially in the magical community, the relationships could be incredibly unfair.

There is, but I do wish you to be safe and well rested too, dear.

That does make sense then, yes. And may I ask your nickname?

Oh yeah people, mostly humans I gotta say, keep trying to pen them or hunt them. And then learn the halla have really sharp horns, and do not like being told what to do, really quick.

I'll rest soon. I'm fine, I promise. I know my limits.

Oh. Vora'shivan. It means hummingbird.

My brother gave it to me. It's...still weird hearing it outside of him though. So I don't mind sharing it, but it was Cyrian's. I don't know if that makes any sense.

Humans do like to think themselves the master of all creation. My people were some of the worst of them in our world. They went around and created colonies on others' lands under the delusion that the people were in need of 'saving' from being 'savages'. I never understood that, myself, and now as a ghost there's always some living person trying to summon us for their own purposes.

I don't mean to nag, or overstep. But I'm glad to hear that.

That is beautiful. And I can see the comparison, with your energy. But I understand completely what you mean, about it being your brother's. It's very sweet, to have a name just from him. I don't imagine I would respond well at all to anyone besides Charles calling me any of the nicknames he uses for me.

Oof, that sounds rough. I am sorry people keep trying to summon you though. IF I ever see someone trying I'll stop them.

You're not! Back in the Lighthouse plenty of the others made sure I slept. I mean I wasn't as bad as Lucanis, but every so often either Neve or Emmrich would come make sure I stopped. It's nice having that again.

Yeah, exactly. I'll tell you about him one of these days. You'd have liked Cyrian, I think.

I imagine it will be less of an issue here. I was something of a folk legend at my former school, given the circumstances of my death. Every few years the schoolboys would try a summoning ritual, and so help me one of them actually found one that worked that was passed around.

If I ever do move from a pleasant reminder to something trying, please do let me know.

I'm certain he was a fantastic man, if he was of your family.

Even worse! Still though everyone's really nice here so they wouldn't, you're right, but you never know.

I will, I promise. And he was, yeah.

Other than being somewhat jarring, and requiring Charles to come assist me in breaking the spell, it wasn't too terrible. We usually settled for giving the boys a harmless scare, to try and prevent them from trying such things in the future.

Good. I'm glad your memories of him are a comfort.
