Amelia really couldn't believe that she was here, about to meet Oliver Wood for a date set up by her brother. Also, she was strangely really hoping this date went well. Normally, Amelia was just hoping for some good conversation and a fun new story, but this one she really wanted to make a good connection. It didn't have anything to do with him being famous, she just really enjoyed talking to him. Hopefully, they would still get along with them not being talking in order to help his illness go away.

Leaving work halfway through the day, she quickly popped back to her place to get ready. Having already selected her dress the night before she quickly changed and did her makeup and hair. She didn't want to go over the top but the girl liked to use any excuse to get a little bit fancy. Once she felt she was ready she made her way to the restaurant they had agreed on. Walking in, she checked her watch and then looked around the area to see if she could see him. Finding him, she smiled before quickly walking, not running, to the table. "Oliver, hi, sorry if I'm late," she said once she made it to him.

Another fox-like grin graced Oliver's features; oh he absolutely knew how to drink wine. And gin. And scotch. And anything else with a pleasant burn. Perhaps it was Scottish genetics to drink like a drowned fish, but Oliver had never had an issue with winning a friendly drinking contest or sipping politely at a fancy cocktail. "Fancier for sure. I'm always a bit nervous I'll break the stem." His right hand lifted and flexed the sturdy fingers with emphasis. "Good for catching and gripping, not so good at handling delicate things." But he managed most of the time.

The cooking skills had been born out of necessity: it was the easiest way for Oliver to control his diet without sacrificing taste or driving the poor takeaway restaurants up the wall with the ridiculous accommodations for a simple meal. It was also a nostalgic activity, as he would often help his mother with the cooking, and there was something about the pleasant sizzling of a skillet that tugged on the frayed edges of long lost memories of summers at the Wood family home tucked away on a windswept moor in the Highlands. "I really want to take those classes." Oliver sighed with longing. "I haven't been able to attend the classes I'm supposed to teach." He'd sent a reserve from Puddlemere in his place 'until further notice'; with his own schedule and the complications from the divorce all outside obligations beyond Puddlemere had fallen to the wayside. Perhaps the two of them could cook together sometime?

Despite himself Oliver also leaned forward slightly. "Well, he told me you liked tea and fancy things. And that if I try anything funny you can absolutely beat me down." Not that he would do such a thing, but the idea of a woman being able to take care of her own safety against him was very appealing. "And now I've learned you like Pinot." And that her eyelashes were beautiful and her nose pointed upward in the most adorable way possible. Or just how luminous her smile really was. "I want to know what made you pursue a career in potions, for starters." Because honestly, he was quite terrible at that area of magic.

Amelia was almost certain he hadn't meant something dirty with his comment about handling delicate things and him flexing his fingers, but that's certainly where her mind went. Giggling she looked over at him, "Well you only have to use a wine glass when you are out in public when you're home you can use whatever you want and no one can judge you. What's your preferred alcohol then, if it's not wine and their fancy stemmed glasses?"

Well, Sam had pretty much defined her there. However, she while did join the martial arts club, she wasn't entirely sure she could take down Oliver. Hopefully, nothing ever would come up that she would have to try. When he asked about her career choice she hesitated, trying to figure out the best way to talk about it in a Muggle restaurant. Not that she expected anyone to be eavesdropping, but they had to be careful. "Let's see. It's not the most exciting story, I'll be honest. I learned by the end of third year that Slytherin with only play guys on their team, oh I suppose I never told you that was my house did I? So after that, I had to find another way to be social so I joined some clubs and that happened to be one of them."

The waiter arriving with their wine interrupted her story. Thanking him, she waited for him to leave before continuing. "I discovered it was something I enjoyed doing, but wasn't something I had considered as a career. When it came time for OWLs and all that, Snape mentioned become a potions brewer and the more I looked into it, the more it interested me. When I graduated I got a wonderful apprenticeship and I've been done with that for about five years now. Like I said, not very exciting, but it is the truth." Looking up at him, she was slightly concerned she was the one being quite boring.

"Come by sometime and find out, or we can go to a good pub." Oliver grinned. Truthfully his preference depended on the day and his mood. Lately he'd favored full-bodied scotches, another very off-limits drink.

Truthfully he'd been unaware of her former house, but the slight raise of his eyebrows was more of polite surprise than one of dislike; Oliver's only complaint with their rival house stemmed from their outright disrespect of Quidditch. They cheated, and sabotaged, and let players buy their way onto the team with money and favoritism. The waiter returned to display the beautiful bottle of wine, and offering Oliver the first sip for approval. Sweet Rowena it tasted of sun warmed honeysuckle and candied pears. He took another sip and smiled. "I think it's quite exciting." Oliver answered truthfully; he found other people and their lives endlessly interesting. Everyone's passions driving them down unique paths all for the same goal: personal happiness.

"It's interesting you say you're not the best at cooking, and yet you're clearly very talented with brewing. Then again I'm good at cooking and couldn't brew tea to save my life." Okay, so that was a slight exaggeration, but there was a kernel of truth behind the joke. Picking up the delicate paper menu Oliver looked over the daily selection, each one more decadent than the last: rack of lamb, fresh Chilean sea bass, gnocchi with sage butter... How was he ever going to decide? "Anything jumping out at you?"

Taking a sip of the wine she raised her eyebrows at him, "I suppose we will have to do just that then. Keeping things mysterious, how very interesting." She was surprised that he was so calmly talking about a second date already. With him going through all he was going through, she still couldn't believe that she had gotten a first one. Bringing up the separation was definitely something that would ruin the mood easily.

Amelia noted his reaction to her house and was thankful he didn't say any more. There was plenty of time for house teasing later should they get to know each other better. Hearing him call her path to her career as exciting was certainly not something she had ever heard. It was quite different from his profession so maybe that's why it interested him. Looking at the menu she considered each option and what would be the easiest to eat and not make herself look pathetic on a date. "I'm thinking the gnocchi sounds pretty delicious about now. I'm not sure that something that can be messed up easily either, but then again you seem to be the chef of the two of us," she teased. Setting her menu she took another sip of her wine before going back to their conversation. "I'm not sure why I'm so much better at potions, maybe because I know that it is going out to other people to help them that I put so much extra work and care into it. Whereas cooking for myself, well just goes towards me. Does that even make sense at all?" she laughed.

A second date for sure; if she wanted it. The first was already off to a good start that perhaps a second in a more casual setting would be the right step; pity it wasn't warmer as they could have a wonderful outing in Queen's Park in London or stroll along the river in Bristol.

"It makes sense. If I'm cooking for my mates or when the family comes 'round I definitely put more care into it than I would slinging together any auld dish for myself." Even though he really did take the time to select the best ingredients possible and insisted on doing his own shopping unlike some of his other teammates. "I was never good at brewing due to the fact I just spent so much time and effort at school focused on anything related to my team, so..." He laughed and shrugged, slightly embarrassed. Luckily the short-sighted obsessiveness on Quidditch had been replaced over the years with a keen eye for small details in contracts and helping to build the perfect team. And moving into captainship, of course. "Yeah, I think lamb for me. You don't mind if I eat meat, right?" Having a few vegan and vegetarian friends had made Oliver sensitive to these things.

"I did hear a rumor or two about you in school about you being a little bit, shall we say, obsessive about the sport," she teased. Sure, there were a few years between them but anyone who was around Quidditch knew how obsessed he was at school before each match. "It all worked out in the end though, so who needs good grades when you have a good career anyway," she added. Sure, she had dived into her schooling because it was what would help her succeed in life. For Oliver, he needed to know Quidditch and he worked hard to get what he wanted. That was the important thing.

When he asked if he could eat meat she was taking a drink and quickly waved her hand while she finished, "Merlin yes go ahead. I'm not a vegetarian or anything like that, also I find it ridiculous when people are like that just because of their personal choices." While she respected people for their eating choices, making someone else adapt while in their presence was a bit too much for her. "So what other questions does the great Oliver Wood have for me? I'm intrigued."

"I had a of help, though," A frown tugged at the corner of his lips at his omission. Many would chalk it up to luck, but the truth was Oliver had an entire team of people and his father's connections to ensure success. Not that the oldest Wood son wasn't ridiculously talented, but Angus Wood had given up his career to be a father and lived his life through his children, mostly Oliver. "My Da was a noted Beater for the Prides and he had myself and my brother training by the time we could walk." Another small, thoughtful drink and he added on. "Though I was a bit silly about my focus in school." Especially when one's priorities were to win a match while your Seeker still barely stood.

Oliver beamed at Amelia; he didn't mind vegetarian options but how often could be justify having lamb with sun-dried tomatoes with garlic and rosemary balsamic reduction? "Nah, your turn, hen. I haven't bored you with a story in," he checked his watch and pulled a look of mock surprise. "Nearly ten whole minutes! Jings. I'm off my game."

His statement caused her to frown a small bit. It sounded a little like he didn't have much choice in playing Quidditch. Amelia had been lucky that her parents were all very supportive of their children and what they decided to pursue, she couldn't imagine what it must have been like for him. Then again he didn't seem like he regretted it at all, so maybe it really wasn't that way.

Laughing at his joke she was interrupted by the waiter, and they quickly placed their order and waited for him to leave. Amelia studied his features while she hummed and tried to figure out what to ask him. "You mentioned a brother, do you have any other siblings?" she asked. That seemed like a simple enough question yeah? I mean he already knew about Sam, and possibly he knew about Miles. Besides, family dynamics could tell you a lot of things about a person.

"Och yeah!" The immediate Wood family wasn't very large, but extremely close. Too close, if you were consult with the youngest child, Logan, who had recently fallen out with his father and suffered a very strained relationship with his siblings. Still, Oliver's face lit up with undeniable glee as he seemed to nearly buzz. "Eddie - Edwardine. She's the oldest and only girl. She's married now, and lives in Spain with her three kids and is a lawyer for the Barcelona Eagles. It was just the three of us, and we're all three years apart equally. I have a whole host of cousins in various parts of Scotland and down around here; it's pure mental when we get together for the family reunion in the summer." Pausing for a moment, he considered Amelia and hesitated. Obvious her and Sam were very different, but he felt odd to bring in it. "Erm, you have Sam, yeah? Miles too. Any others?" Hopefully this would be a safe territory.

Amelia nodded, so he was also from a family of three children. Hearing him talk about big family reunions were sweet and also something she couldn't imagine if they were all like Oliver. It had to be a sight to see for people. When he mentioned his sister lived in Spain she was surprised. Obviously, it was possible for siblings to move out of the country but that wasn't something she regularly thought about. She was grateful that none of her siblings had done that. "Do you get to see your sister and her family much?"

Noticing his hesitation she gave him a small smile of comfort. It wasn't the first time that people had been nervous to bring up her family situation. She understood it could be a sensitive subject for some people but she didn't normally view it that way. When the war was happening though, it made her rethink a lot of things and how unique their situation really was. "You're fine, it's nothing I have a problem talking about. But yes, I just have Miles and Sam," she said before taking another sip of her wine. "Sam's the adopted one, just so you know. My parents always knew they had wanted to adopt so after they had Miles and were ready for another kid they looked into adopting. They met Sam's biological mother and were in the process for that when mum got pregnant with me. So Sam and I are less than a year apart and were in the same year at school, different houses though. Technically though I am still the baby of the family."

Oliver paused for a moment to consider; did he really see Eddie as much as it seemed? Sure they kept up regular communication, but since having her family the frequent visits and impromptu weekend getaways to London dwindled into those scheduled far in advance and with her brood in tow. Not that Oliver minded seeing his wonderful niece and nephews, but it would have been a lie to say he didn't miss their aimless, long nights. "Not as much as I used to," He shrugged in a would-be casual way. "But enough."

Ah, so that was the connection Sam shared with Miles and Amelia. Oliver had wondered once he learned of Sam's siblings, but felt it inappropriate to ask; they were friendly but in his opinion not divulge-family-secrets friendly. He leaned back slightly. "I did wonder," he nodded, happy to hear it wasn't something awful like an affair or a baby left on the doorstep. "But he's great and has a good family." Truthfully Oliver didn't know if he could adopt; of course he spent plenty of time at the Children's Ward in St Mungo's when time allowed, but a fear that he wouldn't be able to love the child as much if it wasn't his own always nagged somewhere in the back of his brain.

A quick sip of wine. Merlin this was good.

"Right. My turn." Leaning forward almost comically, Oliver squinted as though he were examining Amelia with x-ray vision, a goofy grin stretched across his lips. "Worst subject in scho- No. In life." School was so long ago, after all. "What is something you just can not get the hang of no matter how hard you try?"

Amelia shook her head, "You're the not the only who has wondered about us, that's for sure. He really makes our family whole. Sure, there's been some small issues, but then again any family has them you know?" Mostly their issues came about during all the war times, and they came out stronger because of it. Growing up, it obviously was known that Sam was adopted and it never bothered Amelia. "The three of us have always been really close so it was weird having Miles go off to Hogwarts, and then Sam and I end up in different houses. It was a bit of an adjustment but I think I turned out okay.

Watching him study her was definitely adorable and the question that came after was not one she was expecting. "My worst subject in life?" she teased. This could be interesting, depending on how deep and personal he really wanted her answer to be. Given that this was a first date though, she was going to try and keep it light. Tapping her finger on her chin she pretended to be deep in thought, "But if I tell you my flaw who says you will still talk to me?" she said with a wink. "Let's see, I never could understand chess no matter how many times people tried to teach me, and I'm rather trash at karaoke. Also, you already know about my not so great cooking skills. Is that the sort of things that you were looking for?"
