Who: Hugo Hatherley and KC Buchanan
What: The Grand Tour, whatever that means ;)
When: Sunday afternoon, between lunch and dinner?
Where: Islington School

Hugo liked an orderly life. He'd come back to school, carried his brand new sister's bags as far as her floor - further, he was not allowed to go - and left her with a few parting tips for an easy life, or as easy as life could get given their circumstances. He'd headed for his own room then, unpacked everything, made the room shipshape... and then he'd logged into the network.

Mr. Brooks' message was much as it had been the year before, and the year before that, actual new and updates mixed with his particular sense of humor. He grinned, but read it quickly and scrolled past. The first day was generally a bit sparse in terms of entries, but it tended to be the newest people who posted on move-in day, searching desperately for someone with some common ground in this "brave new world".

KC's post caught his eye. Well, okay, the display icon caught his eye, but her words kept his attention. She seemed sort of funny, sort of self-deprecating. Not at all dour or dismal like some new people could be. He wanted to know more about her, and before he knew what he was doing, he had replied to her post, offering her a tour, despite the fact that every new student was offered a tour before their parents paid their tuition.

Imagine his surprise when she accepted.

Now he was waiting outside her boarding house for her to put in an appearance, a single tulip clutched in his hand, purloined from the cook's garden. Propriety demanded some sort of gift, after all.

KC just got back from lunch and from the very brief walk where she bumped into a familiar face, son of her mother's friend. She was feeling a bit uppity now that she knew she wasn't exactly alone in this brand new school. Truthfully, his reception felt a bit lukewarm for KC's tastes but she was somehow hopeful that they'd get along together just fine. He was, after all, the only person she knew. She sat down on her bed and opened her suitcase, intent on unpacking so she could finally take a nap. She was still trying to figure out how to arrange her things—because obviously she's going to need a system here what with the multitude of things she brought with her—when she saw the notification on her phone. Someone named Hugo replied to her post, which she wasn't expecting at all given that she's a new girl.

That's very nice of you to offer, I'd like that.

She didn't think much of it, only that she was lucky someone actually wanted to show her around. The first tour she got was very brief because her mom and her grandma were intent on keeping her from walking too much so she appreciated Hugo's offer. She wondered, while replying with information on where to find her, if she needed to tell Hugo about her condition. Would it be too much for a first meeting? KC sighed and decided not to tell instead. Once, twice, three times would probably be enough for the day. She hoped Hugo would see her response to Dani instead.

She managed to fix her bed with fresh linen that smelled of home before changing into a cute denim skirt and bouncing down the stairs to meet Hugo. He seemed like a smart guy, and his display icon showed he's a looker too. She opened the doors to the dorm and greeted him with a huge smile. "You must be Hugo? Hi, I'm KC." She said, reaching out for a handshake.

Hugo returned the handshake, bowing slightly. Her picture didn't do her justice - she was beautiful, and he felt his face flush red as he looked on her for the first time.

"H-hugo Hatherley," he said, hearing his voice crack and mentally cursing at himself. "Pleasure to meet you. How are you enjoying Islington so far?"

What a stupid question to ask, he berated himself. She'd been here all of an hour, and seen probably the inside of her cubie, and precious little else.

"I'm sorry, I'm a little... new to this," he admitted. He offered her his arm, glad that his long years of manners training hadn't deserted him entirely. "You might have to be patient with me."

"Oh it's been very... nice." She answered decidedly. So far she has established that she has one friend in Islington, and that what little she saw of the school grounds looked beautiful and serene. But it was an odd question indeed considering that she only arrived today. "It's a very beautiful place based from what I've seen so far. I've walked on my own around the courtyard but that's about it." She didn't mention that she grew tired after her brief conversation with Alex. No use worrying his tour guide, after all.

She accepted the gesture graciously and linked her arm with his, impressed with the gentlemanly air he seemed to always have around him. He seemed, at least to KC, the kind of student who prefers to do right by his teachers and peers. "Oh it's really fine, I'm quite new to all this as well." And by new she meant all forms of social interaction at school. "I think you're the one who has to be patient with me. I walk a little slow, you see, and I tend to ask a lot of questions so I hope you won't mind." She said, smiling at him, her dimple showing off. She pushed a stray her behind her ear, suddenly feeling a little self-conscious. Up close Hugo was apparently very good looking and didn't help that he was so nice and well-mannered.

"I've nothing against questions. I don't pretend to know everything about Islington, but what I know I'll gladly share with you."

And walking slowly wasn't an issue either. Though he didn't say as much, walking slowly meant that they'd spend more time together.

"If you've never been to boarding school before, it can be a bit of a shock," he said conversationally as he set off toward a place on the grounds not too many people knew about. "Older and beefier chaps than you have cried their first night. But if you want my honest opinion, I love it here, and I think, in time, you will too." He offered her a lopsided smile. "I think people will be nice to you. A-and if they're not, well, you can come and tell me, and I'll see to them." He puffed his chest out in a display of mock-manliness, but then let it deflate again. He wasn't really that sort of chap.

"This, um. This is where I come to sit and read sometimes," he said quietly, as they pushed through two trees standing close together. On the other side, sunshine streamed down on the secluded little patch of grass, but they were almost entirely hidden from the school buildings. "It's almost always quiet here."

"Thank you," KC said, smiling appreciatively up at Hugo. He's taller than her by almost a foot, where KC's forehead meets Hugo's nose. If he leaned a bit more sideways he'll probably get a whiff of her vanilla-scented shampoo.

She listened intently as Hugo talked about boarding school experiences, how it's normal to cry on your first night. It fascinated her how his school spirit seemed to flow from every aspect of his personality and she laughed when he puffed his chest. "Well I do hope the people would be nice to me. It is my first time being in a boarding school. I've been homeschooled for most of my life so it's definitely a huge change." The truth is, KC had no qualms about having enemies, or about people not being nice to her. Who would bully a small, defenseless, sick girl anyway? For most of her life KC got away with pouting and batting her eyelashes when things go awry. Hopefully she'd be able to last in Islington using the same defense mechanisms.

KC gasped when she saw Hugo's secret hideaway. She marveled at the way the sunshine streamed down beautifully on this side of the school and she got so distracted that Hugo's voice seemed to fade away as she unlinked her arm from her to walk around with a huge grin on her face. "This... This is really nice." She relished the quietness. She liked the way the trees seemed to lean into each other like two people whispering. She twirled around to face Hugo again with a sweet smile. "I'd like to sit around her sometime. You won't mind sharing this space with me, would you?" She asked shyly. It might be perceived as a flirtatious question, but really KC was only trying to charm her way into earning another friend—someone who would most probably help her get adjusted better.

"People here are generally nice unless they're given a reason to be otherwise. I mean... I can't think of anyone who's mean, or cruel..." He stopped for a moment, considering. "Perhaps Renaud Minor could be considered a little prickly, but as long as you get her around her sister, she's fine. She's just not one for talking, when her sister isn't around."

Of course, when he considered how that sounded, he realized it merited elaboration. "They're twins, and they're very close. Renaud Major, or Zoe, she's the older twin. She's the more outgoing. Renaud Minor, Lena, she's the younger and she's much less outgoing... I think I can count on one hand the times I've heard her speak without her sister being by her side. It's just one of those things, I suppose. She's perfectly capable of speech, but seems to prefer it when they're together. Renaud Major, on the other hand, doesn't mind at all, from what I've seen. My dealings have mostly been with her."

His voice cracked and trailed off as KC turned to face him, the grin on her face lighting her up. There was a funny sort of feeling in his stomach as he looked at her, admiring his favorite place (at his favorite place).

"You... you'd want to share?" he managed. "I mean... you don't think it's feeble, or odd, that I'd come here to read?" He took a step closer, unconsciously. "I wouldn't mind having you here, at all. But you wouldn't tell anyone else, would you?" He gave her a lopsided sort of smile. "My own sister doesn't even know about this place. It could be..." he swallowed thickly. "Just ours."

She tilted her head to the side, scrunching her nose cutely while listening to Hugo's explanation of the funny moniker for the twins. She had seen the identical icons bantering in the message boards but didn't know who's who yet, and she's yet to meet them personally too. "But why are they called Renaud Major and Minor? Do they have different voice pitches or something?" She asked, remembering her vocal teacher. It baffled her that the twins had nicknames as such. Would she be able to tell one twin from another when they all meet?

KC blinked when Hugo stepped closer, asking if she didn't think hiding away in that special place to read was feeble or odd. "Well why would I? Reading is fun!" She said, eyeing the patch of grass on her feet. It had been a while since she saw grass outside the confines of their home's garden. She wished she could take her shoes off and feel it between her little toes, but that must be too odd to do especially since they only met. She looked up again to find him smiling that unique lopsided smile and then giggled. "Of course I wouldn't..." She said, shaking her head, her long brown hair swaying from side to side. As he spoke about Dani, the girl from the message boards who said she was Hugo's sister, she wondered why she still didn't know about the hideaway. She didn't bother asking though. Maybe Hugo really liked to be alone. Then again he said the place could be theirs and instantly KC felt a bit warmer, her cheeks blushing just a bit. She didn't know why she felt like that. Maybe she felt special? Yeah, maybe that was just about it. "Okay... It'll be our little secret then!" She said, still smiling at him. She hadn't seen the rest of the school yet, and it's only been a couple of hours but now that she had friends and a secret place to call their own she finally felt at peace.

"Major and Minor - because the one is the older, and t'other's the younger," Hugo explained with a laugh. "Just like I'm Hatherley Major now, because I've a sister, and she's younger than me. We checked," he laughed again. "Because we're twins too, so it wasn't immediately obvious. In the ordinary way it's much easier to tell, because siblings are in different years, making the Major/Minor thing much clearer."

Oh, her hair smelled like vanilla, and she was shaking it and making it waft over him. "KC," he began, but he didn't know how to go on. "I mean to say... you're rather lovely."

"Oh," KC said, surprised by the newfound information. "It seems unlikely that you and Dani are twins, I mean... You look nothing alike!" She wondered what it was like having a twin. If she was born with one she probably wouldn't feel so alone all of the time. "What's it like? Having a twin, I mean?" She was glad that the walk took a while now. There were many things she was curious about and the wonderment made her forget her tiredness.

She felt her heart pumping in her chest as they walked, felt it again when she saw the two trees and when she met Hugo's gaze as she shook her head after promising never to tell about their secret place she felt it again, slow and strong and very... present. When he complimented her she knew for sure that her heart was there. It may be a little broken, and a little shoddy, but it was definitely there. "I-I... Well, I..." She sputtered, giggling shyly. Suddenly she couldn't look him in the eyes. Lovely wasn't such a foreign word, her relatives from Joplin and her mother's business associates in London often called her that. But for some unknown reason, it was hard to believe coming from Hugo. "I find that a bit hard to believe but thank you..." She mumbled, her fingers playing with the ends of her sweater's sleeve. Maybe he was just being polite, yes?

"Well, we're fraternal twins. Fraternal twins generally look no more alike than any other siblings - we just happened to have shared a womb," he shrugged. "And besides, I'm a fellow, and she's a lady. It'd be a little odd if we were identical."

What was it like, having a twin? He considered. "When Mariana told me I had a sister, and that we were picking her up from the airport that day, I honestly thought I would hate her and that she would ruin my life. But I think... the first time I saw her, I just loved her. In a perfectly natural way, that is, nothing untoward! We're having to muck in together, and we're still getting used to each other, but we've literally known each other two weeks, and I already feel very close to her. And very protective."

When she thanked him for the compliment, he swallowed again. "You're welcome," he said. He felt himself leaning in... but dash it all, he was a gentleman, and he couldn't just take a liberty like that. Could he? He stopped himself when their lips were inches apart.

"I do beg your pardon," he murmured. "I fear I may be about to take a dreadful liberty..."

He brushed his lips over hers just slightly, in the barest whisper of a kiss, before drawing back to give her space.

"Oh, that's really sweet of you!" KC said after listening to his story about how he met his twin. There were parts of the story that didn't make much sense to her, but she didn't dare ask more questions. It might be too personal considering they've only just met. So she just smiled as they continued walking.

The smile that she maintained, however, faded a little when Hugo leaned in. She felt her cheeks heating up as she looked at him, her heart was starting to beat faster. Was it still polite to be this close to someone you just met? Would it be impolite to step backward and turn around?

Before she could even move she heard him speak and she froze, finally fully realizing what was about to happen. She felt the peck on her lips and her eyes went wider, disbelief flooding her system. And then she felt cold when Hugo drew back, looking down at her with a gaze that baffled her all the more. Who would've thought that she'd earn her first kiss on her first day in Islington?

"Oh..." To say that she was speechless would be an understatement. She placed both hands on her cheeks, feeling the heat emanating from her skin. She knew she's blushing profusely and she didn't quite know how to deal with it other than to let out a little giggle. "Oh, I'm sorry. Gosh, this is really embarrassing to say but that's... that's actually my first kiss... ever... so... uhm... thanks, I guess?"

"Your first..." Hugo felt awful. "I'm so sorry, you must think me a dreadful cad. To have stolen your first kiss! I'm very sorry."

Why had he done it? She deserved some sort of explanation. "You're just... you're the prettiest girl I've ever seen up close. And I was enjoying our walk, and spending time with you. I don't even know you, I know, but I like what you've shown me so far. But I can walk you back up to the school if you want, and you never have to see me again if you don't want to."

"Oh, no! Please don't apologize!" She said, waving her hands at him. She didn't think he was a dreadful cad. In fact she was beginning to like Hugo for his sweet gestures and smart talk. KC didn't think she'd feel the way she felt if Hugo was indeed dreadful. "No! No please, I don't think you're a dreadful cad, it's okay..." She was delighted, maybe a little nervous, and a little too giddy for her own sake.

KC listened intently, blinking up at him as he explained himself. She liked how he seemed to have chastised himself for what he did and he seemed bashful and gentlemanly, still. The concept of romance wasn't new to her, she read books and she liked watching old romance movies and she had daydreamed of being kissed under the trees like all girls do. And that's exactly what happened to her, with a nice, dashing lad even! True they only met today and perhaps it was too soon because they still don't know each other, but KC couldn't find it in her heart to be walk away and be mad. "I don't think that's necessary..." She said, meeting Hugo's gaze shyly.

"I'd like to see you more often, in fact... If that's okay, I mean..." KC didn't know where the boldness came from. She smiled at him sweetly, her breathing finally stabilizing before it all went too far. "I enjoyed talking to you too and the kiss was really... It was nice." She said, fidgeting with her hands and biting her lower lip. "But how about we take things slowly? Explore the school one day at a time until I get used to it, at least?" She added, peering up at him. She hoped Hugo understood that what she said wasn't just about the school tour, it was also about her feelings. Frankly she didn't think that a whirlwind romance would ever suit her, her heart wasn't built for that. So slowly but surely might be the best way to go, and starting with a kiss wasn't entirely a bad idea.

"Well, if you're really not cross," Hugo said, smiling shyly. "I really am sorry though. I ought to have asked first... or waited for you, or... I'm sorry, I'm just out of my depth here."

He ran a hand through his hair and blew out a breath. "I think that would be very nice indeed - to see you more often. What would you say to..." He frowned slightly, thinking. "Well, we have to eat breakfast and dinner with our houses, but... Lunch, would you like to have lunch with me? At the Livingston table? Say... sometime next week?"

KC smiled upon the prospect of seeing Hugo again. The way he ran his hand through his hair mesmerized her, and she never knew something so mundane could make her feel that way. She wondered what it would feel like running her fingers through her hair like that. But before she got swept away by her daydream he asked about having lunch and though she barely understood what he meant she nodded with a smile. "I'd fancy that, yeah!" She answered.

"So, uh..." Now KC felt awkward. How does someone proceed to a normal conversation after an awkward kiss and an invitation to lunch? She had been locked out from the world her whole life and now she realized social interactions didn't come easy. "Aside from reading in this place, is there anything else you like to do? Sports? Hobbies?" She asked. She never thought of herself as someone who'd kiss a stranger and it still bugged her a bit so she wanted to get to know him better.

"Well, I swim," Hugo said, feeling his chest puff up a little when she agreed to have lunch with him. "I'm rather good at swimming, but I suspect that has a lot to do with my Gift - I'm Gifted in Water," he admitted. "In a way, I suppose it's cheating. But then people do use their Gifts all the time to make careers for themselves."

He gestured out of the little hidey hole, and toward the playing fields. "I'll show you the rest of the grounds," he said, beginning to walk. "And on the way, I can tell you how woefully inadequate I am at most sports involving hand-eye coordination and anything resembling ball skills." He laughed.

"Wow, well that's interesting..." KC commented when Hugo revealed he was a swimmer. She listened as he explained his gift and his views on enjoying swimming despite his gift. "I agree. My mom's Gifted too and she told me it helped a lot with her business." She said. She wasn't sure what having Spirit Gifts meant for anyone, she could barely understand how or why some people are born with Gifts in the first place. All she knows is that she wasn't born with any, and that she was all the ore lucky for it—at least according to her family. "I'm a Mundane so it'll be interesting to see people use their Gifts here."

KC walked along with Hugo, excited to see the rest of the school. She laughed too when he explained that he's bad at sports involving balls and hand-eye coordination. She was finding him more and more adorable for his quirks and self-deprecating ways. "Oh no, it's okay, you're most definitely not the only one. I can't play anything other than equestrian, and even then I have to be really careful. I can't even run, for the life of me!" She said, giggling a little with a tiny skip in her step until she realized she needed to conserve her energy because she still didn't know how big the playing field is and how much longer they were going to walk. She kept her game face on though, because she didn't want to worry Hugo.

Hugo wasn't sure where to take her next. His special little spot aside, most of the places at Islington would have been included in the official tour she was likely taken on when her parents decided to send her to the school.

"Is there anything else you want to see? Any questions about the school you'd like to ask?" he asked. "I wouldn't like to bore you with things you've already seen. I know the tour they give you when you visit is extensive." He could still remember his own, three years ago.

The truth was that KC's tour was shorter than the regular tours new students and their parents get. Her mother had been very concerned about the tour taking a toll on her health that she insisted they be driven by a buggy or that KC be pushed around in a wheelchair, which she vehemently refused. So the official tour was cut short and she was a given a map of the school instead (both a printed and a digital version) so she could find her way around school. She didn't want to tell Hugo, of course, because it'll warrant a lengthy conversation about the complexities of her health so she just nodded when he spoke about not wanting to bore her with a tour she actually only partially got.

"Oh, uhm... I have a question but this might sound a bit weird so do bear with me here..." KC said, biting her lower lip. One of her worries about going into boarding school is the loss of privacy. She would be sharing her cubie with a roommate so she wouldn't be able to sing much, or do other things she enjoys doing on her own. "Would you know... Would you know when the auditorium is most likely empty?" She asked. She hoped Hugo wouldn't ask. There's not much she could tell other than the fact that she wanted to sing privately somewhere, so she hoped he wouldn't ask. "I mean, I'm just curious is all..."

"When the auditorium is empty?" Hugo had to think about that one. "I'm honestly not sure. The very nature of boarding school is that there's always something going on, but as the majority of my extracurricular activities take place either in the pool or in a classroom - or in the boarding house," he listed, "I can't speak to the availability of the auditorium. The person to ask would be Miss Jennings, the choir coordinator."

He glanced over at KC and smiled. "Uh... would it be all right if I told you that you are very pretty?" he asked shyly.

"Miss Jennings. Right. I should pay her a visit then, yeah?" KC said, smiling wide. Maybe the choir would be a good starting place for extracurricular activities. It probably wouldn't tire her like theatre would. "I reckon I could audition for the choir. You know, just for fun..." The truth is that KC had been dying to sing. Sing as loud as she could. She had visions of herself standing in the middle of the stage with a microphone, singing her heart out. But as soon as the idea of hundreds of eyes preying on her small figure sunk in, she'd feel her heartbeat racing--which isn't always a good thing in her book.

KC whipped her head towards Hugo when he spoke again, her eyebrows raised upwards in shock, or panic, she really couldn't tell. It was the first time a boy has ever told her those things and the unexpected compliment made her blush profusely. "I... Well... I... I guess it's all right... I just..." She placed her palms on her cheeks and giggled awkwardly. KC could feel the heat emanating from her face and it worried her a bit. "I'm so sorry, I'm just not used to hearing that. But thank you. I think you're pretty too. I mean, not pretty, pretty, just..." She looked over at Hugo and smiled shyly, noticing the way his hair curled nicely, an air of bashful handsomeness hung about him. "Attractive." She finished, biting her lower lip. She felt the ghost of his lips on hers again, remembering how he kissed her just a while ago. She wondered if they'll ever kiss again, and the thought made her blush all the more so she decided to just stare at her feet awkwardly.
