WHAT: Charlie drops something of value and someone chases him down to return it.

Charlie didn't know why he'd done it. He knew, logically, that he didn't want to talk about marriage for a few more months at least. He wanted to take it slow, to be reasonable. He didn't want to rush it. He would ask her to move in and after they were comfortable he would prop the question.

But tonight he had walked into a jewelry store and, while thinking about buying a sapphire necklace, ended up buying a diamond ring.

A beautiful, modest diamond ring. He was standing on the curb looking at it when he thought he saw Penny's mother. It wasn't her, but he shoved the ring in his cloak anyway. He turned and headed around the corner, into the Leaky Cauldron, through the back alley, and into Diagon Alley. Maybe George could talk some sense into him. He was too distracted to notice when someone bumped into him and when the black velvet box--which was too thick for his pocket-- slipped out from the tight pocket and rolled softly on the brick street.

Charlie walked on towards the shop.

Audrey was headed home from the bakery, and happened to see Charlie wandering toward the WWW. He was one of George's brothers, and she'd seen him at family gatherings, but she didn't know him all that well. She wasn't going to catch up with him and talk until she saw something fall out of his pocket. She bent down to pick it up, and gasped at what she saw.

Was everyone getting married??

She put on a bit of speed, and hurried to catch up with him, reaching a hand out to touch his shoulder. "Charlie?"

Charlie jumped a little, but it was more of a sudden tensing of his shoulders than any cartoonish kind of twirl around. He turned to look over his shoulder and smiled when he saw Audrey, a familiar face.

"Oh, hey," Charlie knew her through George, but he didn't know her as well as Ginny might because he had been out of the country for so long. "How're you doing, Audrey?"

"Pretty brilliant, actually." If you discount the kidnapping and all that. But she wasn't harping on the bad, she was thinking about the good. "Finished moving in with George, and went uh... shopping with Oliver yesterday. Here, you dropped this." She said, holding out the little ring box to Charlie.

"...I didn't look in, but it's pretty obvious what it is. Are you and Penny that serious?" She asked, lowering her voice a little and grinning brightly. Seemed everyone was pairing off and getting married.

Charlie wasn't terribly surprised that Audrey and George were moving in together. He didn't know any of their bumps along the way and they had been together for nearly as long as Penny and Charlie.

Charlie's eyes went wide as he reached out and snatched the box. "I... well... I don't know. I'm not going to do it right now. I just saw the ring and I wanted to get it because it's so... her. I'm waiting. I am." Charlie wasn't ready yet, or rather he didn't want to scare Penny away.

"It's not for me to judge!" Audrey said, holding her hands up as if in surrender. "Not at all. I think love is the most amazing thing in the whole world, and if you think she's the one for you for the rest of your lives, you should ask her. Why wait? It's not like things are going to change between you." That was sort of how she reacted to Oliver and Verity, too. But did she feel the same way about George? She wasn't sure.

She knew that she was in love with George, and that she would spend the rest of her life with him if he asked... but she didn't think they were there yet. That didn't mean that other people couldn't get there.

	"I just don't want to rush things," he said. Things had been rough. They had gone to Africa, he had lost his jobs and spent a couple months drinking too much, someone had tried to strangle her. He didn't want to make Penny feel trapped or rushed. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

	Charlie nodded. He wasn't sure when the time would be right. He just saw thing ring and had to have it. He knew, if he passed it up this time, that he would never find it again. "And here I almost lost this. I'm glad someone honest picked it up." (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

"Or was sold in some pawn shop for half of what I paid for it." Charlie scratched his chin. He was going to have to make sure he knew exactly where this box was until he could get home and shove it in a sock in his dresser drawer.

Charlie walked quietly with Audrey for a moment, thinking about Penny. She was an intellectual person. Clearly she would see their relationship as too short thus far to consider marriage.

	Audrey gave a nod. She walked alongside Charlie, thinking about love, and how romantic some guys were. And she was thinking about how much she looked forward to her trip with George. 	"He kind of went into a dark place after we lost Fred," Charlie said. "We all did, but you know, they were twins. They were joined at the hip." Audrey nodded a little, her face falling, and she closed her eyes for a moment. She couldn't imagine the pain that the whole Weasley family must have gone through when they lost Fred. She had a bit of pain from when she'd lost her memories, but she'd never lost someone she loved as much as George loved Fred.

"They were in my year at Hogwarts. I barely remember..." She wished she could remember better. She knew she fancied one of them at one point... it was written in a journal she'd found from her school years. But just the last name. Weasley. With a heart.

"But he didn't have girls in his life before... before me?"

	Charlie shrugged. "Not that I know of. I mean, I spent a lot of time in Romania but if Mum knew about it she would have written me." Charlie shrugged. "Oh, darn, I was hoping you'd give me the inside scoop," Audrey teased. "I think your Mum is rather sweet," Audrey said, smiling warmly. Mrs. Weasley always made Audrey feel at home, even though half the time Audrey felt completely out of sorts surrounded by the Weasley clan. And she and Molly Weasley had a lot in common with their cooking and mother-hen-ning tendencies.

	"Yeah, oh, heads up, if you marry George the pressure's gonna be on like... right away." Charlie figured Penny could take the pressure, that was if she married him. Audrey was trying her best not to think about what it would be like to be married to George. Mrs. Weasley as a mother-in-law, all the Weasley Children as brothers and sisters-in-law... she was intimidated by Bill a bit, and especially by Fleur. She liked Charlie and Percy very much... and Harry and Ginny were so sweet. Ron and Hermione, too... sometimes she felt like she was part of the family already. But kids right away?

"Really? I don't think George wants to marry me."

	Charlie frowned a little but he just listened. She would keep talking if she was comfortable. It sounded like either Audrey had some serious problems or that their relationship had some serious problems, or maybe both. Did George know that she had so many doubts? (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Audrey had a lot of doubts about everything. She didn't really feel she deserved any of it. Not after all the horrible things she'd been through. She considered herself to be damaged goods, and sometimes it felt like accepting charity to be with George.

"My brother and sister-in-law can't have any more children. They're happy, and their family is complete, but George says he wants ten kids. Ten. What if I can't give him ten?" She said, lifting her hands to wring them in front of her.

Audrey couldn't stop a little snort that came out of her when he mentioned Ron and Ginny being accidents. That seemed to happen a lot, didn't it? And to think, her brother and sister-in-law had to fight for their babies.

"I would never." She said, giving Charlie a little grin. It was small, though. "I'm sure whatever is meant to happen will happen. If George and I are meant to get married and have dozens of beautiful, ginger babies, then we will. But if we're only meant to be in each other's lives for a short time, then... well, I'll be sad. And I'll never stop loving him. But I'll survive."

	The Weasleys were a fertile bunch. Charlie figured George remembered that and was being safe. He hoped Ginny served as a recent reminder for that.
