LOS ANGELES – Two members of the famed "Oceanic Six" have announced that they are engaged. Dr. Jack Shephard, a spinal surgeon, and Kate Austen, a former fugitive, will be married sometime this year according to sources close to the happy couple.
Shephard and Austen first made headlines everywhere as passengers on the doomed Oceanic Airlines Flight 815 which crashed on September 22nd, leaving all aboard believed to be dead due to the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Six survivors were later found to be alive and rescued from the island where they managed to stay alive for over two months. Among the other four survivors were Shephard's half sister, Claire Littleton, and her son Aaron who was born on the island after miraculously surviving impact.
While the world was equally shocked and fascinated by the story of Flight 815 and its survivors, it wasn't a happy homecoming for all of the Six. After years on the run, Kate Austen was finally brought up on numerous charges she had managed to evade previous to the plane crash. A federal trial ended with a plea bargain giving Ms. Austen ten years probation provided she remains in California. Her mother died shortly after, putting an end to her long battle with cancer.
During the trial, Shephard testified to his fiancee's heroic acts of bravery, one of which happened to be saving his life. Though he denied that he loved her upon cross-examination by the prosecutor, there had long been speculation that the two were romantically involved as they had been while stranded.
Shephard and Austen now reside in Los Angeles where Dr. Shephard continues his work as a prominent spinal surgeon and his future wife is considering her career options now that she is a free woman. The couple plan to marry in the Fall and will then continue to reside at their recently bought Los Angeles home.
This will be the second marriage for both.
