Preparing for the Worst
WHO: Cathair and RiffRaff
WHERE: The hardware store
WHEN: Morning

Cathair's first stop was the local hardware store. Besides sporting goods stores, there were few better places for improvised weapons. Especially if there were nail guns. Nails propelled at high speeds were excellent weapons, he'd learned that long ago. If not, the damage somebody could do with a simple claw hammer was amazing. He'd settle for one of those if there was nothing else. He could always fashion himself a slingshot as well. Most likely they even had some heavy gauge ball bearings that worked well for shot. If not, he could always find something else.

As he had learned from checking out a few other buildings, the hardware store was unlocked and open. And apparently someone was already there. He heard nosy clattering and things being moved about and possibly taken apart. "Hello?" he called out, following the noises to their source. Which was a rail thin girl with a shaved head who was taking apart things like she had a purpose.

"Need them for what?" he asked, curious. She seemed the odd sort who was likely good with machinery and electronics. They were always insane, but brilliant. And had the social skills of a badger with an abcessed tooth. "You've figured out how to get us out of here then?" He doubted it, but it helped to know what she was up to so they weren't working against each other or some nonsense like that.

"Hardly," she muttered, "That would take a bleedin' miracle. Not an army of spy capable robots." She grabbed a roll of copper wiring off the shelf and threw it into the basket. Not just a part but the whole huge roll. That'd be good for holding things together and some minor wiring. Everything else would have to be insulated. "They don't know who the Hell they've grabbed. Fucking MI6. Has to be."

All right, he'd pegged her right on. Absolutely brilliant loon. And social skills of a rabid animal. Oh well. His brows went up at her suggestion at who'd captured them. "I've never heard of MI6 carting off prisoners to tropical islands and leave them to run loose on it," he pointed out. "Although the 'need to know basis' smacks of their sort of business."

She arched an eyebrow at him, "I reckon what you don't know could fill an ocean." Okay, she hadn't meant to say that but she wasn't about to apologize for it. The same could be applied to her and she knew it. "Of course it does. It's just like the bleedin' CIA. If we weren't being provided for, I'd suspect the bloody Americans as well. Only we're not in prisons with bags over our heads being tortured." She picked up the basket and went to put it at the head of the aisle in the very exact middle.

Since that could be applied to anybody here considering they had no idea who captured them and why they were there, and she was the sort she was, Cath decided not to take offense. "Only in the James Bond novels," he observed wryly. As for the tied up and being tortured, that was rather what he'd expected.

"The one who left the note, wrote like an American," he observed. One thing he did know was books and writing. "He used American spellings and sentence structure. That pretty much rules out MI6 right there." Cathair may look like a rough sort, but he was well educated and well read.

James Bond had books? Well that was kind of surprising to her. She'd never really been a fan of the franchise anyhow though. Riff shrugged and went to move on to the aisle across from this one. "I missed the note. I had to get out..." She wasn't going to explain about how she was certain that the whole place was unclean. Not with tool grease on her fingers. "And not necessarily. But I'm not going to argue. All I know is I hate myself for getting on the bloody watch lists now."

It was at that moment that she kind of realized that she was actively talking to someone. And that someone was a guy. The hair had thrown her off and so had her distraction trying to get things working and trying to figure out how she was going to carry all of this back to her quarters. Her cheeks turned pink suddenly and her eyes went wide... And everything about her suddenly clammed up.

Yes, well, apparently that was news to most people born after 1980. "It was on the little computer in our cottages," he told. "Someone who calls himself the Commissioner. Which is an American word. Basically summed up we're prisoners, they refuse to tell us why we're here and any attempts at escape will result in punishment of another prisoner."

Which was all rather like a plot in a spy thriller, but the last part smacked off effective prisoner control. While some people wouldn't care, others would. And the ones who did would attempt to stop the ones who didn't to protect themselves and others.

"Watch lists?" he asked. "I wasn't on any watch lists I know. I'm just a book keeper. Cathair Delaney." He didn't offer his hand. Most of her sort weren't the sort who liked to be touched.

Which was the wrong tactic to take, because she suddenly froze up and flushed. Cath glanced over his shoulder to make certain she'd not seen anything he'd missed then back to her. "Are you all right?"

Well that was good too know. She was still going to attempt an escape after intense planning though. It all depended on whether she could hack their security systems and get the information she was thinking about. She could do it alone too. Doubtful this guy knew much about computers at all.

No, there was nothing behind him. Riff took a moment to breathe, slowly and carefully. Okay. Make the mouth work, "I'm Riffraff..." She managed to introduce herself. Good. That was a good step. "Um." Suddenly, she was hiding the fact that she was a genius. Great. Focus on the work. She stepped up to a shelf and started examining electrical testers. She could feel herself start to relax with her focus on machinery again, "Um. I'm... on several in a fair handful of countries. They track the gifted."

Cathair didn't know much about computers. But he did know about urban combat, breaking and entering and other such sordid activities. He also doubted the people who had captured them were unaware of either his or this girl's talents. Which meant they'd made precautions.

"Nice to meet you," he said as she introduced herself. "In other words, you're one of those hacker sorts and they're afraid you'll muck up their computers and steal all their money and all that just because you can?" Yes, there was very little chance their jailers weren't well aware of his past as well. Wonderful. "So what do you think a bunch of spy robots could hope to accomplish?"

"It's more a matter of they're afraid of the 'when'. Fact is, I don't bloody well care about government computers. I only crashed Sony 'cause they're assholes." The electronic tester in her hand was put in the basket in that aisle along with several others meant just for spare parts. "Spy bots. Attack bots. Alarm bots. They all have their place and they all can help in the gathering of information on our captors and the island itself." She said it like it was the most obvious thing on the planet and how could he not think of it. Riff often forgot that most people didn't think like she did.

All right, he supposed if she could hack a major electronics corporation's computers, she was damn bloody good at what she did. "That makes sense," he agreed. "But I need some of the larger ball bearing for a less hit tech bit of protection business. Not many, as I hope I don't have to actually use it, but they're more aerodynamic than rocks and it's easier to aim properly with."

"There should be still some on the shelves." She didn't really need them all. Riff was just protective of equipment and yes, she hoarded but you never really knew when she'd need something. And she wasn't about to begrudge him protection, "But don't come crying to me when you get shot and I'm nice and safe using a robot with a chainsaw attachment to do my dirty work." Could she do that? Probably. If there were chainsaws in the store.

Cathair had chuckle at that. "And how long will it take you to fashion a robot to protect yourself with?" he asked her. "I'll have a proper slingshot in about twenty minutes. And chainsaws are bloody hard to hit things with. You'd be better off attaching a spear of some sort to it. That way you can ram it into things like a knight with a lance. Much easier to hit with."

"Please. I could build a battle robot in my sleep. One was my final project in my first year of college." She looked to Cathair with a sort of bland expression, "I was fifteen." A spear might be an okay idea but to be perfectly honest, it would have to be hydraulic and she really didn't want to put the effort into hydraulics. There were likely better options. Shocks, fire, something.

"Right." Cathair wasn't about to argue, as she likely could do it like she said. He wasn't certain he trusted a cobbled together robot over something with millenia of reliable service. If it was good enough to take down Goliath and people were still using them today, it was good enough for him. Besides, it was easy to make a slingshot, they were cheap and fast and easy to replace. Now all he needed was a good sturdy U joint pipe, some sort of rubber belt and something to wrap about the bottom for a handle. All of which should be found here.

He fished a handful of the largest ball bearings out of the display and pocketed them. "Need a hand carrying all that?" he asked. Really, there was no reason to be rude and it wasn't as if he had anything better to do. "Oh, the note says there's brekky at some shop in town, although I'm not certain how much I trust the food here."

There were no such things as giants - at least in that fashion. But again, she wasn't going to begrudge him his weapon of choice. If that's what worked for him, that's what he could bloody well have. She blinked at his offer, arching an eyebrow, "Hm? Oh. Well... Yes. But I'm hardly done yet. Haven't even gotten to power tools and other bits of construction items yet." She held up her hand like she was holding a power drill and made a surprisingly convincing imitation of the whirring buzz that came with pressing the 'trigger'.

As for breakfast... Riff shook her head, "Too much to do. Just need caffeine." And there was exactly why she was so skinny. Food? Psh, food was for weaklings.

Right, but the stories had to have some basis in fact. Most stories did. He'd prefer a pistol or better still, a long range rifle, but he'd deal with a slingshot since he truly doubted the powers that be around here left much that could be used as a weapon. Especially with the likes of Riffraff and himself about. "Are there power tools?" he asked. "I can't imagine they'd leave those lying around for us to use as weapons." If there was, he was getting himself a nail gun. Just in case.

Riffraff shrugged, "I've no idea but I'm going to check. If there aren't, I'll have a harder time doing what I need to do but I can do it by hand." If the hardware store was so well supplied, she had no doubt that there were power tools. It was like they just didn't care. After all, this guy could fashion weapons out of everything else. Why did it matter?

A nail gun would be a much more effective weapon than a slingshot. He could easily kill someone with a nail gun from whatever it's maximum range was. A slingshot was more a disabling weapon. Besides, it wasn't him they had to worry about. It was the people who thought chainsaws were good weapons that they had to worry about. If they were supposed to be safe, he'd hope they wouldn't be given the tools to harm each other easily. Unless this was that sort of social experiment. "Well, I'll have a look while you finish up in this aisle. If I find some, I'll let you know." After all, she was doing something useful and he didn't really want to hinder her.

"Mm-hmm," was about all she managed as she got lost in some circuitry and transistors and other such electrical bits and bobs. What she wouldn't give for a lab filled with the latest technology. Oh well, this would have to do. She wondered if the computer in her room was strong enough to handle programming for an AI. She had no idea but she was going to find out.

What he wouldn't give for a sporting goods store. Really, was it so much to ask for a good sturdy bat or even a targeting rifle?

It didn't take Cathair long to find the powered tools section and it was rather small and disappointing. A very pathetic, off brand nail gun was all that was there in that department, but there were a few powered drills.

"There's a few drills over there," he told her as he returned from his quick stop in the plumbing aisle for a u joint pipe. "But sorry, no chainsaws. You'll have to make your own." Not that he didn't doubt she could. "I'm just going to bodge this together and start mapping the layout of the town. Shall I check back afterwards to give you a hand carrying things?"

By the time Cathair had come back, that basket she'd been working on was overfilled and the shelves practically stripped like she was some kind of hardware locust swarm. She had been about to move on to the next aisle. "Oh good," she muttered distractedly. But she had heard him, make no mistake. Riffraff blinked up at his offer to return and help her, "Ah... Yes. Arigatō." She hadn't even realized she'd used Japanese instead of English. "I'd be most appreciative. And, um, yes... I can't exactly let you into my quarters though so don't be offended if I push you out of the door."

Cathair nodded. "No worries," he told her. "Isn't as if there's anything better for me to do. I'll map the island best I can in the meantime. You want a copy of the map?"

He shrugged. "I'm wagering you're not one much for idle conversation. I'll not take offense, I promise. I'll see you later."

Now he just needed to find a vacuum cleaner belt or the like and a roll of duct tape to wrap the end for a handle. He nodded once more to Riffraff before he left her to her work.

Did she want a copy of the map? She had to think about that for a moment. A man made map would not be as reliable as anything she could hack out of the system. Assuming she could even get into the system. Still... "Yes." The answer was blunt but she was running out of niceties.

"It's not that. Well it is. But... No offense, but you're not clean." No one was clean. It was a miracle she wasn't freaking out from the stuff on her hands just from the things she'd been touching. She'd sterilize them later - the items and her hands. All very carefully if she had the right products.

She went right back to her work after her explanation, not really waiting for Cathair to answer or to leave. He could do whatever he wanted.
