Jake was fast discovering that he wasn't a fan of earthquakes. They weren't as bad as Beam-quakes, but that didn't make them pleasant to endure. Oy liked them even less, and Jake had discovered that Oy could sense them coming. That wasn't a surprise; Jake had heard that animals knew when storms, disasters, and earthquakes were about to strike. Apparently, that even went for unnatural ones.
Jake didn't think for a minute that these were natural quakes. Not with the warning they'd gotten, not with the frequency they were coming at, and not when coupled with the fact that in the four months people had been here, there'd never been a whisper of a faultline or earthquakes.
Finding it better outside than in, he and Oy had gone for a walk. He was currently rounding the corner toward the back of the hotel to maybe spend some time in the garden when he paused. He wasn't alone.
Swan glanced up as she heard someone coming, and she offered Jake a little smile. "Hello, Oy," she greeted the bumbler.
"Wan," Oy replied as he trotted toward her, his corkscrew tail bouncing a little with the motion.
Jake arched a brow curiously. "Out making friends without me?" he called toward his furry friend.
Swan smiled. "I met him when ... the music was loud," she explained as she crouched down to pet Oy. "I've never met a talking animal before. He's not a dog, is he?"
Jake shook his head. "He's a billy bumbler. From Mid-World." He paused. "I'm a little surprised. He doesn't ... usually talk to people unless I'm around." He wasn't usually so friendly with them, either, Jake thought as he watched Oy rolling onto his back to bare his belly. He felt something vaguely like jealousy but ... why couldn't Oy make his own friends?
"I have a way with animals," Swan admitted softly as she rubbed the bumbler's belly. "And plants. I guess ... all of nature, really, but mostly the plants." She flushed slightly. "I'm Swan."
"Jake," he replied as he slipped his hands into his pockets, moving closer to crouch down near them. "Nice to meet you."
Swan flashed him a little smile as she rocked back on her heels to sit on the ground. Maybe it would be nice to chat for a bit with Oy's friend -- and whoever else wound their way back to the garden this evening.
