Characters: Tyler, Ariana, Lizzy
Time/Date: Evening, September 22
Location: Lobby/rec area
Warnings/Rating: None
Summary: Tyler tries to organize fun but useful things
Status: Player drop

Lily had told him that Jaime was out of commission for the time being. Likely until their guests had departed. He'd gone himself to check on Jaime, and he hadn't missed the raw places on her wrists. He'd tried to get her to come down, but she was going on about how no one wanted her, and Tyler quickly realized it was a losing battle. He'd tried to leave some reassuring words with her, but he thought they'd fallen on deaf ears.

All the same, he'd asked Kaylee to keep an eye on her, and he'd used -- just a little -- to make sure Jaime couldn't close her door. It wasn't much, but it would have to do.

Then, Tyler had gone about gathering up what art supplies he could find, as well as a few spare sets of white sheets and the paint left over from the renovations. That had merited a venture out of the hotel, but he'd gone quickly and had one of the patrollers walk with him. He'd gathered what art supplies there were, and a few more candles, and headed back inside.

His plan was to distract the distractible ones with sheet-art, which he would then hang in the windows. It wouldn't keep the dementors out, no, but it would at least (maybe) block some of the chill. Besides that, if one came in through the window, maybe the sheet would drape over it, providing a target.

According to Lily though, if they did come in, it wouldn't be one but the lot of them.

Still, what else could he do?

Spreading out one of the sheets on the floor, he laid out the paints and brushes and glitter, and waited to see if any of the kids showed up.

Tyler had made a post in the network. Group activities. Fun times and colouring and Lizzy was pretty sure that there were no dementers anywhere that could take away this happy from her.

Granted. The lights would go dark and she would remember that she was nothing but a little girl to him. A little, insignificant mouse who was doing nothing more than getting into trouble and proving to be a security risk with her abilities. A constant worry, a child who needed supervision. She was a nothing. A no one. And nobody wanted her around.

But then the lights came back on, and she remembered that Tyler who thought she was special had set up a group activities downstairs and there would be colouring that she could do and it was going to be so much fun! And there would probably be chocolate! She liked chocolate. People were giving out lots of it today.

She told Ari where she was going, in case the other girl wanted to come along, and left Ches upstairs. He seemed to want to patrol the hallways and help to make everyone less sad. She heard that Dug was doing something similar. She thought that it was because animals were not affected by the ghosts outside, but she wasn't sure. Either way, that was fine - the less, the better in her opinion. If too many people showed up, Tyler would be distracted, and wouldn't see what an awesome artist she was.

She noticed the lights flicker again, and her steps faultered. She really didn't like this place sometimes, it was too depressing.

Making it to the lobby, finally, she peeked her way out of the staircase, looking around for wherever Tyler was set up before her face broke into a grin. Her eyes glanced up towards the windows and she watched the silver shape move past it, and tilted her head to the side before moving over to where Tyler was.

"Hi," she said, standing and just looking at him for a moment before she plopped down into a cross-legged position. "What are you doing?"

Her eyes fell on the glitter and she inhaled in great surprise, her eyes growing wide as saucers in her excitement.

Tyler glanced up as he heard someone approaching. He did manage to stir up a smile for her, unsurprised she'd come along. He wondered if Ari was with her, and he glanced past the younger girl. He didn't see the tiny blonde witch though, and he frowned a little. She should ... be down here, too.

"Dunno what I'm doing yet," he said before he gestured at the sheet. "Thought we should paint some happy scenes on this though," he offered to her.

He noticed her noticing the glitter, and he smiled. Maybe he was at least on the right track with this. "So what do you think? Happy pictures to drive the dementors away?" he suggested before he gestured back the way she'd come from. "Do you know if Ari's coming down?"

"Happy pictures to drive the dementors away," she agreed, nodding her head a bit more than was strictly necessary in her excitement. The lights dimmed slightly, and the excitement diminished, though Lizzy wasn't sure if that was because she remembered that the happy thoughts were what drew the dementors out, or if it was the ghostly things themselves that was causing her discomfort. Maybe some combination thereof.

"I told her that I was coming down," she told Tyler hesitantly, though now her thoughts were changing. She was not enough. She was stupid and small and annoying and Ari was much better company than she was because Ari was older and knew when to not talk out of turn and ask stupid questions and Tyler would rather be colouring with her, Lizzy was sure of it, and that was why he'd set it up because he knew that Ari liked colouring and Lizzy was just allowed to tag along because she was a friend of Ari's, and she lowered her head slightly, pushing the markers around a bit.

"I could..." she started, frowning at the marker's intensely. She'd been about to offer to do something, and now she forgot. Then she started to pull out her device, and looked at it curiously for a moment before she held it up for Tyler to see. "Ches is upstairs," she told him. She thought she was making it clear that she could tell Ches to bring Ari downstairs, but perhaps she wasn't.

Tyler nodded. He kind of hoped the other girl showed up; she was the one he was more worried about as far as handling dementors went. What if they incited some accident that blew up the entire hotel or something? Or was that impossible? He didn't know enough about Ariana's magic to decide something like that.

He smiled when Lizzy pointed out that Ches was upstairs, and for a moment he didn't understand.

When he caught on, he shook his head slightly. "No, that's all right. If she wants to come down, she will." If Ari knew Lizzy was down here, then maybe the girl would show up on her own.

"What do you think we should draw first?" he asked in an attempt to direct her attention back to the task at hand so that maybe she wouldn't notice the dementors as much. He wasn't sure he was any good at this but ... he'd try.

She brightened a bit when Tyler didn't insist she find a way to bring Ari down - she liked Ari, and wouldn't have minded exactly if Ari came down to colour with them, but the idea that Tyler had set all this up for her had been depressing - turning her attention back to the supplies when he pointing them out.

"Ummmmm... I don't know," she confessed lightly, before she peered up at Tyler shyly. "Are dementors afraid of anything? We could start with that. What about those... those glowy animals that the magic people are using to keep them away? The pa... patrono-susses." She was pretty sure she wasn't getting that term right, but she'd made an effort. "We could draw some of those, and then maybe they'd get confused and stay away from those windows."

It made sense to her, but then, she wasn't really clear on the idea of what a patronus was, she was focused on what they looked like. Content with her idea, she picked up a marker and started to sketch the outline of an animal shape. She'd figure out what animal when she finished drawing it and decided what it most looked like, but right now she was hoping it looked like a fox. It wouldn't though - it never did.

"Patronus," Tyler offered with a little smile. "We could try that," he agreed. It wouldn't work; he knew that. But it was something to keep her mind off of everything. Not that it would matter, when they came close enough to start messing with their emotions. Nothing would matter then.

When he heard a slight shuffling noise, Tyler glanced over his shoulder. He smiled to the little blonde witch, beckoning her over.

Ariana hesitated a little before she skittered around the couch to settle down beside Lizzy. "What're we doing?" she whispered to the younger girl. She peered at the sheet and cocked her head before she glanced shyly to Tyler.

Her eyes shifted back to Lizzy as she peeked at what the girl was drawing. What ... was that, exactly?

When Tyler moved, Lizzy looked up to see what he was looking at, and her face split into a grin and she waved as Ari came over to join them, shuffling over a bit to make room. Which was unnecessary, given the amount of space they had, but she did it anyway. She moved to get paper and markers for Ari as well - since she'd been here first, she obviously knew what was going on and wanted to help out her friend.

"We're colouring Patrono..." she bit her tongue, closing her eyes and remembering Tyler's exact phrasing of the word. "Patronus. Es. Pictures to put in the windows to scare the dementors away," she told Ari. "I don't know what animal mine is yet," she added, nodding to her picture. Right now, it just looked like a couple of blobs with sticks. "But I'll colour it when I'm finished tracing the edges and stuff."

Tyler was glad the other girl was down here. Not glad that there was going to be a chance of accidental magic explosion, but glad she was down here where he could see and try to help if that was going to be the case.

Exhaling, he slid down off the couch. He really didn't have to do anything more than supervise, but he thought things might go a little better if he actually interacted.

Picking up one of the brushes, he thought about what animals he could draw, and decided to go for a turtle. They were ... pretty easy to draw, for the most part. Opening the can of green paint, he dipped his brush into it to start applying paint to sheet while keeping an eye on the girls.

"Oh," Ari said. Her brow furrowed and her lips parted to point out that she didn't think that was how it worked, but ... Lizzy had to probably know that wasn't really how it worked.

It was something to do, anyway.

Glancing to see what Tyler was doing, she shifted her dark blue eyes to see what Lizzy was doing before she shrugged and picked up one of the red markers.

She'd draw a phoenix, she thought. Or try to.

Lizzy glanced up at the smell of paint, and immediately thought that... her image was useless. It wasn't paint, it was just marker, and she should have used paint and paint was clearly the better idea and she sort of curled up and poked spots onto her drawing needlessly for a moment before she decided that she could just paint over her drawing later, once she had the outline. She wondered if that had been her original intention all along, and suspected that it probably had. Tyler just didn't need to draw an outline because he was older and obviously better at it than they were.

Glancing over to Ari's drawing, she nodded briefly in approval before she turned her head back to Tyler, peering at his image while simultaneously trying to appear like she wasn't peeking at it. "What are you drawing?" she asked curiously, wondering if it was something she could draw herself.

Tyler grinned. "Just a turtle. Pretty sure it's the only thing I can draw and make it even vaguely resemble what it's supposed to be." He wasn't an artist by any stretch of the imagination. He didn't think any of the Sons were, unless Pogue or Caleb was hiding some talent from them.

He dipped the brush again, stilling his hand as the lights flickered but held. Even with the candles burning around them, he preferred having the lights. He ... really just wished the damn things would go away.

Then he recalled the wizards and witches were doing their best to keep them away, so he shouldn't be too upset about it.

Ari hiccuped when the lights flickered, and she tightened her grip on the marker. If she was a proper witch, if she wasn't broken and useless, she could be out there with the others, making her own patronus to help send the dementors away.

She peered down at the red lines on the sheet and thought they looked nothing like a phoenix, and she missed her brothers and she hated this whole miserable place.

Tears tumbled down her cheeks but she brushed them away before resolutely forcing herself back to her art.

Lizzy had been about to tell Tyler that she was certain that that wasn't true, that he was definitely going to be as good of an artist as he was at everything else, when the lights started to flicker. She shivered slightly, her eyes turning down to look at her own blobby fox, and she scowled at it, scribbling over it furiously, suddenly disgusted with it. With herself, and her own inability to do anything right.

She'd never been able to do anything right at the castle, either. And then when she'd tried to run away, she'd even screwed that part up. And even Saul didn't think she was any good at anything. Cheshire Cat only followed her around to make sure she never got into trouble. And now... now Ariana was crying, and Lizzy didn't even know how to fix it, so her only real friend in the world was sad, and Lizzy couldn't even help with that.

She stared blankly at her picture for a minute, the blobs of nothing scribbled over, before she got an idea. Using the blobs and the scribbled over fox as a starting point, she was going to colour a whole bunch of dementors dying horrible ugly gruesome deaths, while she and Ari and Tyler laughed at them.

Tyler glanced to Ari when she hiccuped, and to Lizzy when she started scribbling, but he managed to keep his sigh to himself. They were just kids, and even though Ariana was a teenager, she was ... more childlike than not, and he reasoned she wasn't so far above Ari, as far as her social development or whatever it was in kids.

"It'll be okay, guys," he said gently. "In a few more days, they'll be gone," he promised, and hoped that was true.

Ari sniffled a little, nodding her head as she continued to draw the red lines into a shape that if one squinted and tilted and peered very intently might sort of resemble a phoenix. If the person looking had a very good imagination.

Blue eyes shifted to see what Lizzy was doing, and an inappropriate giggle bubbled past her lips. "Giving them warning?" she murmured.

"Yes," Lizzy said absently to Tyler's comment. "Because in a few more days, we will have killed them," her lips curled upwards in a devious grin, and she giggled a bit in spite of herself.

She knew that wasn't really how it worked - enough people had explained to her that you couldn't kill dementors that she had finally grasped that concept - but it was fun to imagine.

When Ari giggled at her image, Lizzy looked over and grinned at her a bit wider, feeling a bit better herself. "It's only fair," she pointed out loftily. "They should be given the fair chance to run away terrified, their stupid cloaks waving away behind them. Maybe they'll lose them, they run away so fast."

She giggled again, adding that image to her depiction. Innocently naked stick figured dementors, running away with their cloaks floating to the ground behind them, having fallen off.

Tyler smiled, and he was pretty sure Lizzy knew better. Still, if it would make her feel better, there was no harm in letting the story stand as it was.

Keeping an eye and an ear on them, Tyler continued to work on his turtle as Ari drew something in red and Lizzy ... drew the fleeing dementors.

Ari smiled. "I wouldn't warn them," she admitted. "I'd just surprise attack them and make them all go away."

Oh, how she wished she could. How she wished she possessed the knowledge of it. Her brothers could, she was sure of it, even Abe because he was brilliant. Not as brilliant as Albus, but in his own way, Abe was just as skilled.

She looked for a yellow marker to draw on a clumsy triangle beak and spindly yellow legs before she started to color in the tips of the tail-feathers.

It was ... sort of recognizable, she thought.

"I could try to make them go away," Lizzy said thoughtfully, continuing to draw the dementors more casually now that her main point had been made in her image. "I could go out and yell at them and see if it works but... Ches said that he didn't think that that was a good idea," she frowned as though judging her image to see what else she needed to add, though she was more pausing to consider that thought. "Besides, I think there are too many of them now," she added a bit sheepishly.

She didn't know how many of them there actually were, but with the way they were floating past the windows and always making the lights go out, she assumed there were hundreds of them.

Glancing over at Ari's picture, she craned her neck and frowned a bit. "What kind of bird is that? I've never seen one before," she asked curiously.

Ariana nodded. "I think there are, too," she agreed, glancing toward the window. She shivered a little before she refocused on the drawing, thinking about her brothers. Her brothers ... who weren't here, but who would protect her if they were.

"It's a phoenix," she replied to Lizzy. "It's a magical bird. My oldest brother told me about them once." Why, exactly, she couldn't recall. It had been a bed-time story, maybe when Abe had been sick and her mother had been out. After the accident that broke her magic, but ... before her mother had died.

Before she'd killed her mother.

Ari's hand stilled, and she yelped a little as the lights went out. There were candles, sure, but ... it wasn't the same.
