RP: Demented
Characters: Simon, Sir Didymus
Time/Date: Nighttime, September 18
Location: The infirmary
Warnings/Rating: None
Summary: Simon contemplates "dementors" and tends a sick dog
Status: Complete

Simon had read the updates in the network, and he'd tracked Lily down to ask questions -- after welcoming her back, of course. She'd assured him there shouldn't be any physical injuries caused by the dementors, though there'd be a great deal of depression. When he asked if drugs would work, anti-depressants and the like, she'd admitted that she didn't know, but it wouldn't hurt to have some on hand.

Like he had any choice in that matter. Simon idly fingered his Blackberry, wondering what would happen if he wrote a note to the people in charge to ask for those sorts of drugs. Would it be considered? Would they give it to him because he asked? Was that part of the point? He didn't know, and he wasn't sure what sort of effect asking would have. Most of the time it couldn't hurt to ask, but here ... he thought it might.

Setting the device back on the table, Simon sighed and crossed to the window. Parting the curtains, he gazed out at the view from where he stood. He could see the line, and the edge of the water, but he wouldn't be venturing there any time ... ever.

Crossing his arms over his chest, he thought he should go check on River, or talk to Kyle, or ... do something, but he was at a loss. He could go see Kaylee, but he occasionally needed a little quiet time. She was a wonderful woman, but she was also very high-energy, and sometimes ... well, sometimes he just came to the infirmary to hide. To think. Like he was doing now.

"'Twill be all right, Ambrosius," Didymus soothed, leading his mount in the door. "'Tis the infirmary. 'Tis where one goest when one is ill."

Ambrosius gave a pitiful whimper, and he could tell that his steed wanted nothing more than to lie down again. But Didymus had heard tell of downed steeds never getting up again, and he wouldn't allow that to happen on his watch. Perhaps the doctors here could help.

"You, there!" Didymus called, looking up at the man in the room. "I say, my steed ist ill. Canst thou aid him?"

Simon turned slowly, regarding the ... pair in the doorway. He hesitated for a long moment, because he really, really didn't know what to make of this. His first thought was to say that he wasn't a vet, but it wasn't like there was an ample amount of them around, right?

Maybe there was enough information on the computer that he could ... fix whatever the situation was?

"I ... ah. I'm not a qualified animal doctor," he began, just so the man would be aware. "But I'll take a look and see what I can do. My name's Simon Tam and I'm one of the physicians here." One of, now, because at least Dr. Banner was offering his services now.

"What seems to be the problem Mr. ...?"

Didymus nodded slowly, when the man said he was not a qualified animal doctor. That, however, could not be helped, and if he was willing to take a took at Ambrosius, that was the best he could ask.

"Sir Didymus," he answered, stroking his paw down Ambrosius's neck soothingly. "Come on, boy. 'Tis all right. Doctor Simon Tam wilt help put you to rights." He looked up at the doctor then, questioningly, wondering if he ought to entice Ambrosius to leap up onto one of the beds. Considering how wretched his steed felt, he wasn't certain that was possible.

"He hast expelled his morning meal all this day," Didymus said, frowning as his shook his head. "From either end." Mayhap that bacon had not been a good idea after all. Or mayhap he ought not have fed Ambrosius half of his slices, as well.

"Ah," he said. He wasn't really terribly familiar with the gastro-intestinal maladies of animals, but he had taken a basic course on animal health (mostly for a lark, for curiosity, because it had been offered, not because he'd needed it). "Well, the odds are good that it was simply something he ate that upset his stomach, and ... it will pass. Just keep an eye on him and once he gets it all out he should be fine.

"Make sure he has access to water though. It'll be important to make sure he doesn't get dehydrated ..." Simon trailed off and turned away. He crossed to one of the drawers and pulled out two packets of electrolytes. "This might help, too, to help him retain the water. Just ... ah. Empty the powder into his bowl and dissolve it, see that he drinks it. It doesn't taste like anything, so he shouldn't have any aversion to it," Simon continued.

"If it's still going on tomorrow, bring him back here and I can ... have another look at him."

Simon hesitated. He knew what sorts of things to feed people who were suffering from sensitive stomachs, and wondered if the same would apply to dogs. "You can try, too, some chicken broth if there's any ... in the kitchen." Dogs ate meat, so he didn't think chicken broth would be bad.

He then realized that the ... fox-man might have some trouble making it. He really thought about calling Kaylee, since this was more her area, but he could heat up some broth. He was sure. He wasn't completely incompetent in the kitchen, after all. "I ... can help you with that, if you'd like?"

Didymus took the two packets from the man and placed them inside his doublet for now. Dissolve the powder in his water -- which meant he would have to open the packets first, obviously -- and make certain that Ambrosius drank. He could do that, and so he nodded to the instructions, and again when the doctor said to bring him back on the morrow.

And chicken broth. He hadn't seen any chickens about, but he had no doubts the good doctor knew whereof he spoke. He hesitated at the offer of help, but then drew in a deep breath and nodded once more. "Wouldst thou?" he asked, with a nervous glance at Ambrosius before leaning closer and stroking his paw down his mount's neck once more. "I cannot lose him."

Simon nodded. He didn't honestly think there was a chance of the dog passing, but he didn't want to belittle Didymus' concerns, either. After all, if it went on unchecked, the dog certainly could become very ill. "We'll do our best," Simon assured Didymus before he nodded to the door.

He wondered if there was broth in the kitchen, but he at least knew there was soup, and he could strain the broth out of it if it came to that.

Simon stepped into the hallway before glancing to the pair of them. "Do you prefer the elevator or the stairs?" He knew some people had aversions to the elevator, and he wasn't interested in confining people who weren't inclined to be confined. Especially if it might stress the dog further; he didn't know how the dog felt about the elevator.

"I thank thee, Doctor Tam," Didymus answered, humbly, with a half bow. He only just straightened in time to notice the good doctor's nod toward the door, and made to follow. "'Tis all right, Ambrosius," he soothed again, petting his steed as they turned about. "The broth shall make thee better," he added, more confidently than he felt just now, but he had to keep a brave face for Ambrosius's sake.

Didymus blinked at the term 'elevator', but when conjoined with 'stairs' that way, he imagined the good doctor meant the moving room. Even if Ambrosius would have preferred the stairs, however, he didn't think his mount had the strength, at present. "The, ah, elevator, I think," he answered, frowning slightly.

Simon nodded and pressed the call button for the elevator, waiting until it opened. Once they'd loaded in, he hit the lobby button.

He glanced to the dog as the elevator descended, and when the door opened up again, he headed into the kitchen. Rolling up his sleeves as he went, Simon thought Kaylee would get a kick out of hearing he was now a doctor turned vet, helping the little fox-man and his dog.

Prowling through the cabinets, shifting aside the canned things, he did come across some turkey broth, and thought that would be good enough unless ... ah. There it was. He supposed he should thank the cooks that kept the place stocked with basics.

Opening up the can, he set it on the counter before looking around for a bowl. He'd microwave it a few seconds so it was at least warm, and then go from there. Once he'd done that, he set the bowl down on the floor and gestured for Didymus to instruct Ambrosius to have at, if the dog hadn't already started to investigate the dish.

Didymus dutifully followed the good doctor into the moving room and also to the kitchen, hoping against hope that Ambrosius would not simply collapse along the way. He did not seem to be too awfully weak yet, and his ... emissions also had appeared to cease for the time being, but he would not rest easy until Ambrosius was once again bounding about like ... well, like Dug.

After Doctor Tam had relinquished the bowl to the floor, Didymus walked closer to it, and then whistled to Ambrosius. "Come on, boy," he cooed then, crouching next to the bowl. "Come and have thy broth, Ambrosius. Good boy," he added, as Ambrosius finally seemed to get the idea and took a few steps toward the bowl. He bent his head, with a tentative sniff, and then began to lick up the broth. His mount was not out of the woods yet, he knew, but it was a start.

Simon shifted to lean against the counter, figuring he'd stick around to handle the cleanup so Didymus wouldn't have to struggle with the dishwasher. He rubbed lightly at his cheeks, figuring maybe he'd go head up to Kaylee's room, borrow her shower, and borrow her bed for the rest of the night once he'd taken care of his patient.

"So have you been here long?" Simon asked. It seemed a cliched topic of conversation, about equivalent to discussing the weather in polite society, but it was conversation all the same. Besides that, it might lead to somewhere interesting or give him some insight to a new, different world.

He shifted his weight slightly, looking around the kitchen as his thoughts drifted back to where they'd been before ... dementors and anti-depressants. He'd ask Kaylee what she thought of writing to their captors and ... see what she thought.

"Nearing a month," Didymus answered, straightening once he was certain that Ambrosius cared for the broth and would continue to drink on his own. He pulled a chair out from underneath the table and climbed up, settling himself and stroking Ambrosius's back absent-mindedly.

"How long hast thou tarried here, Doctor Tam?" he asked the good doctor, raising his eyebrows. For one who was not an animal doctor, he still seemed to know what he was doing, and for that, Didymus was immensely grateful.

"About that long," he agreed. It seemed so strange to think that just over a month had gone by since he'd been here. Been kidnapped, he guessed was the better way to phrase it. He still didn't understand the point of it. Why him? Why his crew mates?

He knew there were no answers to those question, so he tried not to think about it too much.

Rubbing at his arms, he turned his attention down to the dog, watching as he lapped the broth.

The connection was a little late in being made, but he recalled the list Jaime had posted, and the fact that Didymus had been a name on it. He was suddenly tempted to ask the fox man if he'd like to be examined to ensure nothing had happened while he'd been away. But that might be poking at a sensitive issue, so Simon opted to keep his mouth closed on the matter. Still, he was regarding the fox-man with a slightly different level of interest now.

Didymus watched as a contemplative expression came over the good doctor's face, and he rubbed his arms, looking down at Ambrosius. Something clearly vexed him, and Didymus could not help wondering if he thought the prognosis was not good.

He began petting Ambrosius's neck again, leaning closer again, until his entire side was in contact with his steed. If he indeed thought that Ambrosius would not pull through, he wished that the good doctor would tell him so. Ambrosius would not understand, but it would give him time to prepare.

Simon watched the interaction between Didymus and the dog, and he shifted his weight slightly again. "How long have you ... ah." He gestured slightly. "Had him," he finally said.

He wasn't sure anymore with the animals what sort of relationship they had with the people they were seen with. There was a woman with a panther, and the boy with the bumbler who was his friend not his pet, and then there was Dug ... so really, Simon's entire world was being tipped on its ear when it came to defining animal-human relationships here.

So he hoped he wasn't offending Didymus with the question. "Or I ... ah. How old is he, do you know?" He moved away to get another bowl, filling this one with cool water from the tap which he then set down beside Ambrosius' other bowl, in case the dog wanted to drink as well.

"He is four," Didymus answered, looking down at his steed fondly. "I got him as a puppy -- a gift, when my father made me his squire." When the good doctor brought Ambrosius another bowl -- this one filled with water -- he pulled one of the pouches from within the recesses of his doublet.

"Should I dissolve this in his water now?" he asked, a bit uncertainly. Ambrosius was still absorbed in the broth, for the time being, but its volume dwindled rapidly, evenif Ambrosius's thirst did not appear to have abated.

Four wasn't bad for a dog, right? Not even middle age. But for all he knew, Ambrosius was an immortal dog, and he smiled faintly at the thought of that. Why not? He'd run into all manner of things here he'd never considered before, so why not an immortal dog?

Simon nodded and gestured toward the water dish. "Yes, certainly, as long as he seems interested in it. See if he'll drink that and then let him rest tonight, and he should be right as rain tomorrow," Simon said.

He didn't see why not. It was likely just a case of upset stomach, and this would work to keep him hydrated; there shouldn't be a repeat tomorrow.

"Very well," Didymus answered with a nod. Then he bared his teeth, in what might have looked like an aggressive expression, but it was only so that he could hook a canine into the pouch in order to tear the thing open. Didymus crouched beside the bowl of water.

Ambrosius gave a possessive growl at that, apparently thinking that his master was intent on stealing his broth. Didymus chuckled at that and shook his head. "It's all right, Ambrosius," he said, with a smile and a glance up at the good doctor. "I shan't steal thy broth." Then he poured the powder into the water, and he folded the empty packet so that he could use it to stir.

Once he'd finished off the broth, Ambrosius took a sniff of the other bowl and then lay down on the floor. He didn't seem especially interest in the water, but that was all right. Didymus could always carry it up to their room for him. He might be thirsty again later.

Simon nodded slightly as he watched the pair of them. When the dog laid down, he wondered if he should stick around or offer to move him upstairs or anything like that. He probably just needed to rest, and Simon nodded again.

"Do you want me to help you get him upstairs or anything like that?" he offered. "Or carry the bowl for you?" While he was fairly certain Didymus could handle the bowl, he wasn't sure he'd want to both keep the bowl from jostling while walking Ambrosius to the elevator.

He didn't mind, either way; he just wanted his patient to be comfortable.

Didymus was torn. Part of him wanted nothing more than to allow Ambrosius to rest, right there where he was on the kitchen floor. Another part, however, knew he would rest more easily in their room, where there were fewer distractions. And, of course, he wasn't certain that he could manage the bowl and keep the medicinal water from spilling if he had to lead Ambrosius along, as well.

Finally, he nodded, agreeing with the good doctor's suggestion. "Taking him up to our room might be best," he said, but then he frowned. Doctor Tam likely hadn't the strength to carry him, so they would have to walk. Therefore, he bent to retrieve the bowl and handed it to the good doctor. "If thou wouldst be so good as to carry this, I shall coax him along." Then he bent once more, to entice his steed to stand. "Up, boy," he encouraged, giving Ambrosius a prod in the side. "Just a little bit further, and then thou canst rest until the morrow."

Simon took the water dish, though he imagined he likely could have carried the dog. But perhaps that might have upset him, if he wasn't accustomed to being carted around. Deciding he'd see how things went, Simon started out of the kitchen to head toward the elevator.

"Which floor are you on?" He inquired. He wasn't sure if he'd seen them around on the second or third floor, and those were the two he spent most of his time on -- between the infirmary and Kaylee's room. Even so, just because he hadn't seen them going in and out didn't mean they weren't on one of those two floors anyway.

At first, Ambrosius merely gave a whine and covered his eye with a paw. Then he rolled onto his side, pushing both paws at Didymus in such a way as to indicate he did not wish to leave the floor just now.

"Come now, Ambrosius," he said, firmly, straightening and standing back with his hands on his hips. "We must away upstairs, so that thou mayest take thy rest in our room."

Finally, even if it was accompanied by another whimper, Ambrosius slowly got to his feet. "That's better," Didymus said, rewarding him with a pat to the neck. "The fourth floor," he then added, looking up at the good doctor, as he led Ambrosius toward the door and out of the kitchen toward the moving room once again.

Simon nodded slightly before he stepped into the lobby and crossed toward the elevator. After pushing the call button, he shifted his grip on the bowl slightly. When the doors opened, he stepped in and stuck his foot out to hold the doors open in case Ambrosius was having a slow walk across the lobby.

Once they were safely settled into the elevator, he nudged the button for the appropriate floor before leaning against the back wall, glancing down to his patient.

He grinned a little, still amused he was playing at being a vet. At least it wasn't anything serious, though he wondered what would happen if something serious did happen. Maybe not to Ambrosius, but to Dug or Oy or ... the panther. Or any other animals that showed up.

He supposed he'd deal with it if it came up, but it was still worth wondering about.

It was slow going, because Didymus could tell that Ambrosius wanted nothing more than to by lying down once more. Still, he cooed to his steed all the way to the moving room, to encourage him onward, once they were inside, and again, after the doors had opened with the sound of a bell to herald their arrival.

"Almost home now, Ambrosius," Didymus assured him, with another pet to the neck and an encouraging smile. And when they had reached their door, Didymus stretched up to unlock the door and turn the knob. With another whimper, Ambrosius went inside on his own, with nothing in the way of encouragement, and curled up on the floor at the foot of the bed. "I thank thee for thine aid, Doctor Tam," Didymus said, and then -- after he'd put away the key inside his doublet -- he held out his hands for the bowl.

"That's what I'm here for," Simon assured him as he offered Didymus the bowl. "He really should be fine by the morning," he said quietly. "Just leave that where he can get to it if he's thirsty during the night, and see how he's doing in the morning. If he's still acting sick, I'll ... see what else I can do."

He was fairly certain though that it was just an upset stomach that would pass.

Offering Didymus a smile, unless the fox-man had more questions, Simon turned to head back toward the stairs, intending to stop in to say hi to Kaylee and see what she was up to.

"I shall," Didymus answered with a nod, taking the bowl. He resisted the urge to thank the good doctor a second time, since he had only just dismissed his thanks, before. Still, he offered him a small smile and added, "Thou art exceeding kind."

Even if he had said that was what he was there for, tending to ill dogs was clearly not his domain. And yet, he had done his best, regardless, and for that, Didymus was grateful.
