RP: The Pool
Characters: Jayne, Faye
Time/Date: afternoon, September 11
Location: the pool
Warnings/Rating: Jayne. that's a warning, right?
Summary: Jayne tries that swimming thing
Status: Complete

Jayne hadn't been much for recreational water time, ever. While he saw no particular reason to start now, the last time he'd wandered up this way he'd gotten lucky. Very lucky. Maybe if the trend continued, he'd find someone else to have a romp with. If not, he'd ... try that swimming thing that people here seemed so fond of.

He'd found a pair of swim trunks at the mall, found a towel that suited him -- it had rocket ships, and that was close enough -- and wandered up to the roof. He glanced around and didn't see anyone up there. Even a peek into the gym and hot tub area didn't reveal anyone, and Jayne shrugged a little. Maybe someone was in the showers, and while the thought of wandering in on some nekkid chick was very appealing, he didn't think that action would win him any friends. At least, he wouldn't get anywhere with the girl he'd walked in on.

So he shrugged and shed his shirt and wandered over to the water. He supposed that in the interest of not drowning, he shouldn't dive into the deep end. Instead, he hopped in the shallow end, grunting a little at the contrast of the cooler water to the not exactly hot air. He wandered in up to his waist before he leaned forward and spread out his arms. He flailed, very ungracefully before he stood up again. He looked around, very sincerely hoping no one had seen that before he waded in a little deeper to give it another go.

Maybe he'd have to invest in lessons.

Faye just needed to get her mind off recent events. The entire idea of people being 'sent home' tore at her, because she doubted home was anything more or less than a euphemism for death. And even if it wasn't... For Spike, it would be. If they sent him back to wherever they'd drawn him from, he was a dead man. It was predetermined, or so logic demanded. So home or death, it was all the same for him. And she... wasn't happy about the prospect of losing him again.

Maybe she was wrong to wish him into a world where nothing was safe and silence was a precursor to doom. Maybe she was wrong to consider that she might want to stay here. Faye, however, wasn't one to care whether she was right or wrong. She did what felt good, what was right for herself.

That included going to the gym to work off the surprising amount of excess energy that came when anticipation mixed with boredom. So she'd stayed there for an hour or so, mostly tending to a punching bag as if it were a real person, before making the logical procession to the shower room. She was there for only a short while - as long as necessary to wash up properly.

Afterward, she put on a clean outfit - still as revealing as ever - and slipped on a pair of sandals then just left what she'd originally worn laying around. It wasn't technically hers, anyway, given that it had come from the mall, and she didn't feel like carrying clothes back to her room. Instead, she occupied her hands with towel-drying her hair as she left through the gym. The original intentions were to head to an elevator and go back to her room... until she caught sight of the flailing display of horrible swimming.

At first, Faye was only mildly amused; but once she got a good look at just who was in the pool, it took every ounce of strength to avoid bursting into laughter. Jayne, the man who was anything but lacking in certain other skills, looked like a drowning rat. Or a child. It was too priceless not to further his embarrassment.

Faye dropped the towel around her shoulders and gave her hair a little fluff with one hand as she approached the pool. She remained quiet while approaching, though the grin she wore was likely a sign of what she'd seen. Why else would she be amused at his presence?

"I'm beginning to think you live up here," she teased, looking down at him from the pool's edge. She allowed a second or two to pass before slipping off the sandals to sit, legs hanging into the pool. "Or were you trying to drown yourself? Couldn't take one more second without me?" That, of course, brought a devilish little smirk.

Jayne jerked slightly as he heard someone speak. It took a moment for his thoughts to catch up and when he realized it was Faye, he grinned a little. Shrugging his bare shoulders, he turned to face her carefully so he didn't get in any deeper than he already was.

"Just thought I'd see what all th'fuss was about swimmin'," he admitted as he let his eyes drifted over her. He, of course, made no attempt to hide the fact he was checking her out, though he did refrain from pointing out she looked better nekkid.

"I don't live up here," he added after a moment, even though he reasoned she'd just been teasing about that. Who'd want to live on the roof if they didn't have to? "An' I ain't tryin' t'drown myself," he continued before he smirked to her. He ran his hands through the water, getting a feel for the buoyancy -- or lack there of -- before he fixed his gaze on her face. "You know how to swim?" he inquired, brows lifting in an expression that was a cross between amused and ... perhaps serious.

Jayne didn't think he'd be too particular about where his lessons came from. It was something to do to pass the time, right?

"It's something to do," Faye guessed with a shrug. She didn't understand the appeal of swimming, either; but she knew how - if only in a basic sense. A small part of her figured it was an interest left over from the childhood she couldn't remember. Overall, however, she didn't fully care about such insignificant details. It was easier to avoid thinking of the past.

Faye moved her legs in the water - not quite kicking, but having a certain rhythm to the movement either way. She'd have been blind not to notice him checking her out, but she didn't mind. If anything, she liked the attention; and she mirrored his grin with one of her own as she allowed her gaze to wander his body. She really wouldn't mind if he never wore a shirt again and might have even said as much if not for the timing of his response.

"Good," she said with a half-stifled giggle and a mischievous glimmer in her eyes. "It'd be a terrible waste of... your talents." Of course, she only really knew one of his talents; but it was likely the most... entertaining. There were endless things she could have said or done to drive the point home, but she decided against it. He was better with direct, she knew, but she doubted he was dense enough not to understand what she meant.

Her legs paused mid-'kick' when Jayne asked if she knew how to swim. It wasn't so much the question as his expression which caught her off-guard. Was that genuine inquiry? It certainly seemed like it. She tilted her head slightly and offered an innocent smile - the kind which seemed anything but innocent.

"I'm a few steps beyond flailing and drowning," she teased. "Maybe I could teach you a thing or two... for a price." Granted, there was no useful currency and all food and supplies were free; but it was in Faye's nature to be difficult and get the most she could out of a situation.

Jayne smirked, but he understood bargaining well enough. Trading ... a gun for a woman, a significant amount of credits for a couple of fugitives -- nevermind how that one had nearly gotten him killed -- tit for tat, this for that, payment for a job ...

He was just curious if she was actually willing to teach him. And if he was seriously considering it.

"Guess I'd have to hear what yer chargin', first," he said, brows lifting as he walked carefully back toward the shallow end, stopping when the water just covered his waist. "I mean, it might not be worth it when someone's pretty as you and a hell of a lot less driven by a bargain shows up t'teach me for free."

He was pretty sure she knew that could well be the case. There were plenty of friendly people here, some of which had to know how to swim and had to be willing to teach him. Not that he had any intention of seeking them out, but if she wanted to bargain, he'd play along. Why pay for something he could get elsewhere for free? Granted, 'pay" and "free" were relative in this conversation, but that was just quibbling.

Faye offered a devious little smirk, but on the inside she was at a loss. She hadn't exactly thought ahead enough to figure out what sort of 'payment' she would request, and the only ideas which came to mind were cigarettes and sex. Too bad both were technically free (as was everything else, it seemed).

"Unfortunately for you," she teased, "I'm one of a kind." She shifted backward, slowly standing along the pool's edge again. It was obvious in her expression that she was amused by how carefully he moved toward the shallow end, but she walked the parallel path with a slinky sort of grace rather than laughing or mocking him. "You might just die up here, if you plan to wait for someone else."

Truthfully, she knew that wasn't the case. Some of the other captives were much more friendly and less concerned with profit; whether they were just as pretty as herself, however, she didn't know. It wasn't as if she'd gone out much or been overly sociable. But... either way, Jayne was right. If she proved to be too difficult, he could just shoo her away and find someone else, leaving her to remain bored with very little to do. (At least, very little which she found appealing.)

Once she was near to his position, she looked down at the water, contemplating the prospect of just getting into the pool as she was. It wasn't as if she had a swimsuit hiding under her clothes, after all; and she wasn't too keen on the idea of skinny dipping... at least, not when others might wander over to the pool. Jayne had already seen everything she had to cover, but she'd just die (or drown herself) if Spike or Ed decided to visit the roof.

"Looks like you're more prepared than I am," she murmured, laughing softly after stating the obvious. "I suppose that entitles you to a discount." She arched an eyebrow and moved to sit on the edge again - just as she had before. "So... a pack of smokes and... next time, we go to your room?"

Jayne watched curiously as she stalked around the edge of the pool, brows lifting slightly. He supposed it was debatable, her uniqueness -- he'd met women enough that carted a gun and spread their legs and liked to bargain -- but it wasn't worth bringing up just then. Maybe here she was the only one of 'em like that. "Don't plan on gettin' in over my head, 'f no one else shows up," he assured her with a grin. "You ain't got nothin' t'worry about in that department," he added, the corners of his eyes crinkling slightly with the statement.

Jayne chuckled when he heard her price, bared shoulders rising and falling in a shrug. "S'pose I c'n walk down t'the store for you," he agreed. There wasn't anything worth swiping in his room just now anyway, not with his guns already missing, so he guessed he had no issue letting her into his domain, such as it was, for a little romp. He reasoned she'd know the drill now, and if she didn't leave, well, he'd point her at the door.

He thought she'd catch on though.

"A'right," he agreed. "Guess you can get yerself into the water an' start teachin'," he prompted, wondering if she'd run down to change or just hop in with her clothes on. Either way suited him just fine.

Faye smirked, pleased as if she'd actually made a good deal. When it came down to it, however, she'd not gained anything she couldn't have already had - especially since she really didn't care whose room was involved. After the wonderful little 'welcoming party' she and Jayne had shared, she wasn't so keen on robbing him or otherwise screwing up a decent opportunity to get laid again. At least, not when there wasn't anything truly significant to gain through theft... She had her priorities straight, even if her morals were lacking.

"Hands-on lessons cost an extra pack," Faye said in her best business-like tone (which wasn't very good at all, given the fact that she was attempting to hold back a laugh at the same time). She considered going after a more-suitable change of clothes, but laziness won over. After tossing the towel aside and splashing a bit of water toward him, she slipped into the pool as-is.

It took longer than expected for her feet to touch the bottom, bringing the water quite a bit higher on her body than Jayne's. Suddenly, the task seemed a little more daunting than it had in her head. Although... When she thought about it, she'd gotten herself in a little deep in a less-literal sense, as well. Faye knew how to swim. She just didn't remember how she'd learned - which, of course, left her without knowledge of the proper way to teach.

She sincerely hoped she didn't end up killing him, or letting him drown himself, or... letting him drown her. But, at the same time, she figured it wouldn't be too hard. Don't inhale the water, don't flail like a drowning rat, learn how to tread the deeper water... Those were the basics, weren't they? Well, that and the 'doggie paddle,' though she couldn't wrap her mind around a man like Jayne doing anything so childishly named.

"So... let's see how good of a teacher I am..." Faye felt a little awkward, but figured he didn't feel perfectly natural in the situation, either. She leaned back slightly, lifting her feet from the pool floor; her arms swirled lightly to keep herself afloat as she spoke. "If you can't relax, you can't swim. Don't worry about the water, just remember to take a breath before you start. Keep your head down, and if you need to breathe, turn your head. The less you move, the quicker you sink." To demonstrate, she stilled her arms... and slowly returned to her feet with gravity doing most of the work. "Just... start out like you did earlier. Without the thrashing... Like this."

Faye made a rather-graceful display of what she wanted Jayne to do, even showing off a bit by going underwater to circle around him. When she emerged, she pushed the hair from her face and gave her shirt a little tug. Swimming in clothing wasn't the most comfortable - or, apparently, the most modest - thing for a woman to do.

"Think you can give that a try... or should we start smaller?"

(Ooc: I don't know how to swim. Never did take to it. So, please forgive any inaccuracies; I only have Google search results to go by.)

Needless to say, Jayne found the scenery a little distracting, and while Faye was explaining and talking and demonstrating, he was attempting to devise a way to fuck her in the pool without risking their lives by drowning. So far, he wasn't coming up with too much, but it was a pleasant train of thought all the same.

No harm in it, either, while he was standing only waist deep, broad bare feet firmly planted on the slightly slick tile bottom of the pool.

Shaking his head to try to draw his thoughts back to the present and to ignore the way the wet shirt clung to her curves, Jayne nodded. "Sure, I c'n do that," he said.

What, exactly, he was trying to do escaped him, and he grinned a little. Start out how he had before, right? Without the thrashing? How was he supposed to even attempt to stay afloat if he didn't push the gorram water around? That was what did it, right? "So if I ain't thrashin', what am I doin', 'zactly?"

He tried pawing some of the water past him in a modified stroke, and wondered if that would work when he was horizontal in the water. Not that he was in a rush to get there, exactly, because he was convinced he'd -- somehow -- manage to suck in a lungful of water.

Faye snickered softly, stifling most of it behind an impish sort of smile. Maybe she hadn't quite explained it well, considering that she'd not outright said he should use his arms... just without panic and choppiness to the movement. Maybe she wasn't a very good teacher. But... Well, it was somewhat amusing. She had a feeling he wasn't half as ready as he'd like for her to believe.

"Thrashing is too violent, not relaxed... You have to move, but not... like you're fighting a sea monster." She watched as he moved, paying a bit more attention to the aesthetic details than to his actual movements. He was nice to look at, especially half-naked as he was (and even completely naked, she noted with the slightest tilt of her head).

After a moment or two, Faye forced herself to focus. "Sort of like that," she said with a half-nod. Part of her mind wanted to mention that the movement was similar to a 'doggie paddle,' but she decided against it. "Only... you should try it horizontally."

She stopped herself just short of mentioning that he'd be fine so long as he didn't try to breathe in while his nose was under (or very near to) the water, since she didn't want to assume he was afraid or worried. Somehow, however, she got the feeling that he'd be difficult to teach. Maybe he'd even want to quit and find some other form of... occupying time. Faye didn't particularly mind that thought. Not in the least. It was kind of fun to observe this side of the merc, though - the side which had to depend upon a much-smaller-than-himself woman for swimming lessons.

"Knowin' them hundan got us roped up in here, wouldn't surprise me t'find a sea monster in the pool," he muttered. He wouldn't have minded that if he'd had a gun on him -- his, or someone else's -- but there weren't any to be had just now.

"Worked out the horizontal part myself," he admitted with a glance in her direction. Heaving a sigh as if he were incredibly put out by the whole thing, Jayne waded forward again, moving to where it was deeper and the water should -- in theory -- support him.

Funny how it occurred to him then that there were about a billion better things to do than make an idiot of himself in the water. But apparently, that was his chosen activity at least for the next little while. So be it.

Pushing off from the bottom of the pool, Jayne lunged forward. He flailed a few times, sputtered, and then managed to coordinate kicking and arm motions to sort of move very awkwardly forward through the water.

Slowly, and far less than gracefully, he made a little bit of progress before he let his legs swing down under him. Still kicking under water, he waved his arms around and found that yes, if he kept them sort of under the water, he could keep his head above it. Probably not really go anywhere, vertical like he was, but at least he wasn't drowning.

Faye wasn't quite sure what hundan meant, but she figured it didn't really matter. Its use as an insult was rather clear. "It wouldn't surprise me," she admitted, wrinkling her nose in disgust. She still hadn't found much of a reason to hate the island, but she'd heard enough about the past events to know that the Heads were sadistic jerks. Why not put a sea monster in the pool? Or worse: why not poison the water? She hoped that wouldn't be the case.

As she watched his attempt at swimming, a big grin formed on Faye's expression... the kind of grin which made it obvious that she was trying her best not to laugh. He wasn't terrible. At least, he wasn't quite as horrible as he'd been at first. But that didn't make the unceremonious display any less amusing.

"See, you didn't drown," she said after he'd stopped. "That's... better than I expected; and you have treading down." The tone in her voice was sincere enough, or so she hoped. She really did think he was doing well... for someone who didn't know what they were doing. He still had much work to go before he was capable of swimming without humiliating himself, unfortunately. At least, by Faye's standards, he did.

"Now," she said with a sly, little smirk, "come back here." Maybe she was enjoying this a little too much, but at least she was also genuinely attempting to help him.

"Why don't you come here?" he suggested, brows waggling. But then ... he couldn't touch the ground here, so maybe that wasn't going to be the best of ideas.

Jayne exhaled a sigh and started back toward the shallower end, fumbling and flailing a little before he remembered the way his body was supposed to be moving to accomplish this swimming thing. Incidentally, he was deciding he really didn't like swimming that much, and now that he'd tried it, he didn't think he'd be giving it another go any time in the near future.

He really was doing his level best to keep his head above water, not at all trusting the idea of putting it under. Not even for a second. Not even if he was holding his breath. Not even if he was plugging his nose at the same time.

It just weren't happenin'.

Faye could think of one good reason not to go over to him, and it was the same reason she had for why she should: Jayne's expression. On the one hand, she had a feeling just what his wording and expression suggested. On the other hand, she wasn't too keen on the idea of drowning; and the water where he was would be even farther above her head than his. There just wasn't any good way to word the sentiment. Thus, she was rather glad when he resigned himself to returning.

Slowly, she backed up a few paces until the water was level with her waist, adding a bit of extra distance that he would need to swim in order to completely reach her. Whether he would actually let her manipulate him in such a way, she wasn't sure; but the point was just to have a little fun. If he stopped at the original location, she would rejoin him there. Eventually.

Only after he was comfortably in the shallow end - after he'd stopped swimming, if he chose to stop - did she speak. And even then, it was just a teasing remark.

"It's easier if you don't break your neck trying to stay above water," Faye said, mischievous glimmer ever-present in her gaze. "You aren't very fond of swimming, are you?"

The question was genuine, though she wasn't quite certain that was obvious in her tone. From what she could tell, Jayne wasn't exactly enjoying the process. In fact, he seemed to get a little frustrated every time he had to attempt something beyond walking in the shallow end of the pool.

"Ain't goin' t'be very high on my list of fun things t'do when I'm bored," Jayne admitted only after he had his feet firmly planted under himself and was safely vertical again. "Maybe I just ain't meant for it. Some people ain't," he continued. "I bet you put River in here, she'd be just fine, but not me." Which led him to imagining the rest of the crew in the water.

He reckoned Mal'd shoot someone before he let himself be pushed in, but he didn't know him that well. Simon'd probably had lessons on his fancy core planet. Zoe and Inara'd probably do just fine, and look good while they did it ... which led him to imagining them in proper swimming attire. Those were some nice images, and the grin on his face said as much before he drew himself back to the present and his current company.

"Nope. Think I'll leave the swimmin' to the fishes an' keep on at what I'm good at," he declared decisively.

Faye half-laughed and shook her head, amusement obvious in her expression. "Her name's River," she said. "It's predestined." Or maybe it wasn't. She didn't know River, but she figured Jayne's word was good enough on the matter. Obviously, he at least knew a few things about the girl. Or woman. Or animal.

Part of her wondered if perhaps River was the name of the last girl he'd taken (or followed) to bed. Not that it was anything more than curiosity; she really didn't care - at least not in a negative manner.

"What you're good at..." She raised an eyebrow and shot a suggestive little glance toward him. The intention was to convey the unspoken sentiment - I know one thing you're good at - without ruining the bit of teasing which followed. "Just what might that be?"

Jayne grinned right back to Faye's expression. "Think you already have some idea, given that look you got," he pointed out. Master of stating the obvious? Not quite, but he was working on it.

Really, he'd more meant shooting things, but he could see why her mind would drift in that particular direction, all things considered.

"Mostly meant shootin' stuff," he said with a rolling shrug of his bared shoulders before he started walking toward the steps that would lead him out of the water. At least he'd tried it, and found it didn't suit him, so that was that.

Reaching down for his towel, he started to dry himself off before he flopped down onto one of the lounge chairs, stretching himself out.

If nothign else, he'd at least netted himself some good company, so he had no complaints there.

Faye tilted her head in a half-shrug, clearly amused by his increasingly-common knack for stating the obvious. If Jayne wasn't careful, she just might have to start calling him Captain Obvious. Or perhaps something a little less cliche which had the same meaning.

"You can't just show off your skills and expect nobody to notice," she teased with a subtle wink. She didn't mention it, since there was no real guarantee that they'd ever get their guns - or ammo - back; but Faye figured she'd like to see Jayne in action at some point. Maybe she'd even like to partake in a little competition with him to see who was the best shooter.

She watched as he left the pool and followed soon after... looking quite like a drowned rat with her clothes all soaking-wet and clingy. With a low, frustrated growl, she fought with her shorts in attempt to squeeze some of the water out of them - and eventually gave up, allowing them to keep dripping. The shirt was a little easier, as she just pulled it up and wrung it out over the pool's edge.

Content with (or perhaps resigned to) the relative dryness of her clothes, she grabbed the towel to give her hair a rough drying, slipped her sandals back on, and joined Jayne in a nearby lounge chair. She settled into a comfortable position - complete with a little more wiggling than necessary - and ran a hand through her hair.

Knowing her luck, the chlorine in the water would dry out her hair, but she didn't particularly feel like retreating to her room just yet for another shower. Jayne made for nice enough company and there wasn't much to do inside aside from shooting the bathroom wall with a water pistol... while pretending the wall was a person and the water was either real ammo or some form of deadly acid.

"I saw your post on the network," she said, flashing him an impish grin. "'Over your dead body,' wasn't it?" She paused for a couple of seconds before continuing, "You're the most lively corpse I've seen in a while." Why not poke fun at the fact that his gun was taken? Hers was, too; but at least she was given some sort of half-assed replacement. Or something.

Jayne snorted at the reminder, but since it was coming from someone in sopping wet clothes that highlighted her curves nicely, he wasn't going to protest it too much.

"Ain't my fault they drugged me," he muttered. "Or any 'f us," he added; he wasn't the only one missing something, after all. But he'd heard things were coming back on Tuesday, so he just had to wait it out a few more days and things would be set to rights again.

He stretched out comfortably on the chair, letting the heat and the warm breeze dry him off. Where everything was coming from if they were all sealed in, he didn't know or much care; he figured it weren't so different from living on a ship with filtered air and electric lights.

This just had the element of make-believe real-world to it.

Not much interested in talking about the absence of his gun and not real interested in finding a new topic, he closed his eyes. He thought he could probably nap out here, and why not? He'd just exerted himself mightily, trying not to drown and all that.

Faye shrugged, vaguely conceding to his point. It was true enough: nobody had wanted their weapons to be taken. Nobody had expected or asked to be drugged so that it could happen. And, to be completely technical, nobody had asked to be here in the first place. What was there to say to that, without adopting Jayne's 'Captain Obvious' tendency?

It was fairly obvious that the conversation wasn't going to last and that he had no true interest in keeping it going, so she just laid back in the chair with the intentions of drying off a bit before returning to her room. Sometimes, it was hard not to speculate that Jayne and Spike were separated at birth or some such strangeness. Maybe they were even father and son from different points in time... It was possible here, wasn't it? Although she'd rather not think about the possibility that she'd sexed up the offspring of the man she loved. Somehow, that was just... wrong.

Either way, the gist of the comparison remained. There was a complete death of conversation, and neither of them seemed willing to fix the problem. So they were just sitting there, close enough but in seemingly different worlds of their own thoughts. Yep. Just like Spike. Minus the unflattering obsession with an ex girlfriend. And the fact that Jayne didn't treat her like the human incarnation of the plague.

Maybe they were only half-brothers in the theoretical world in which all gun-obsessed, hot-headed, attractive men were related.
