RP: Help! I need somebody! Help! Not Just Anybody!
Characters: David Banner and Open to multiple threads
Time/Date: After nightfall, 09/08
Location: A decrepit building
Warnings/Rating: PG
Summary: David goes exploring, and finds a rotten building, but is rescued by Jake.
Status: Complete.

Being free of the Monster was a gift David was prepared to thank the scientists for, if he wasn't sure that they'd remove the gift at the worst possible moment. But he was taking advantage of not having to worry about getting stressed or tired or angry by being out and searching buildings. He'd always been afraid before, afraid that a falling plank or rotten floor would cause him pain or stress or fear, and bring the Monster along.

It had been a peaceful few weeks since he had arrived, with no visits from his other self, and he was more than glad to have a guarantee of waiting. But with the boom lowering again possibly as soon as Monday, he had decided to take this time to come out. Exploring houses was fun, and he had hoped he could find one he could retrofit as a cage for the Monster. So far, he had not had any luck.

He had just entered a new house, slowly moving, carefully, testing each area carefully. A noise outside distracted him and he twisted and put his foot down wrong. There was a loud cracking, and he was falling, sharp wood tearing at his clothing and skin as he fell downward, slamming into the floor below, which gave, and then down again, and coming to an abrupt atop against a stone floor, with a cracking sound and a shot of pain along his side.

David was stunned for a long few minutes, before he slowly rose, crying out as he realized his right arm was broken, in at least two places. Damn it! What a foolish old man he was. He looked around, darkness greeting his eyes, no light nearby. He was trapped. He closed his eyes and sat for a moment, resting.

This was not good...

Jake was restless, but that was no surprise. Months of odd sleeping patterns and light as a feather slumber when he finally did sleep weren't horribly conducive to a normal, restful sleep pattern. Curious to explore their environment at night, Jake and Oy were prowling the darkness when they heard a noise.

Jake reached for his gun reflexively, cursing silently and grimacing when he recalled it wasn't there. Roland's gun ... they had better give it back.

Oy lifted his head, ears pricked forward before he started to move toward the building the sound had come from. "Oy," Jake called softly. The bumbler glanced back at him, blinked placidly, and resumed his forward motion.

"Ake," the bumbler muttered, shaking his head slightly before he paused outside the door.

Jake followed his friend to the door, drawing it open and peering inside. "Hello?" he called. "Is anyone here?"

David groaned as he shifted, and then, suddenly, heard something above. He wasn't sure what it was, until he heard a voice, calling out. He surged to his knees a shot of pain filling his side.

"Hello! Yes. I'm down here. Be careful where you step! The floor is damaged or rotted. I fell through it to the basement, I think, and can't find a way out."

He felt a shot of relief, even as he hoped the other man would not end up in the same predicament.

Fell through the floor? Jake peered into the darkness before he shook his head slightly. If there was a basement, there had to be stairs of some sort, right?

Though he wondered what the guy had been doing, running around unsafe places in the dark. "Can you ... feel around and see if there are any stairs? Are you hurt?" he tacked on as an afterthought.

Because that might pose a problem of some sort.

David started moving slowly, using his one good arm to feel along the walls. "Working on it. And yes... I think I broke my arm." Well, he knew he had, but that just sounded dramatic.

He slowly moved around the room. looking for anything, until he found a door, and a knob. he jangled it, and cursed as he found it locked.

"I found a door, but it feels like it's locked."

Of course it was locked. And of course they had no means of ... unless he could unlock it from the other side.

Jake lifted his head to look around a little before he eased inside the building. "Stay," he murmured to Oy.

"Ay," the bumbler echoed, sitting down outside the door, apparently unconcerned with the goings-on.

Keeping his eye on the bumbler for a moment, Jake started to move around the edge of the building, trying the doors as he encountered them. One proved to be a broom closet before he found the locked door that presumably led to the basement. He fumbled around in the darkness and managed to find and twist the lock open.

Drawing the door open, he shook his head slightly. "Awfully late, and dark, to be prowling around," he pointed out as gently as he could manage.

David waited, and was glad when he heard the other approaching, then opening the door. The sudden light, dim as it was, was enough to make him squint, and nod, blushing faintly.

"Yeah. Maybe so. Got later than I thought while I was looking. I had a flashlight, but I have no idea where it is now."

He was embarrassed as he assessed his condition and realized he was very lucky. He held his arm close to his chest and shook his head. "I guess I didn't think this out as well as I'd thought I had." He offered a smile, and his good hand to the other. "Thank you, for coming, and for rescuing a foolish man."

Jake grinned a little, despite the situation, and wondered if maybe some of the boards hadn't been weakened deliberately by their captors hoping for such a situation. It was a petty thought, but Jake thought they were proving to be petty people.

He nodded to the extended hand before tilting his head in a 'follow me' gesture.

"The wall should be safe if you stay by it," Jake offered as he started to lead him out carefully. "And I can go get the doctor when we get back," he offered. He was pretty sure he knew which room Dr. Tam was in, and it shouldn't be too much trouble to get him.

If he was sleeping ... well, Jake would wake him up.

Oy moved out of the doorway as Jake approached. He recognized the man by scent, and the bumbler offered him a grin of sorts before he started to lead off toward the hotel proper.

"Okay." He moved along the wall, slowly, and then out with the other. "Hello, Oy." He nodded to Oy and then followed them both.

"Thank you, again, Jake. Other than rescuing people, how has your week been?" Changing the subject? Whatever gave you that impression?

"'lo," Oy replied, glancing back once to the man with the broken arm before he resumed his trot, stopping now and again so Jake and David didn't get too far behind.

"Pretty standard, I guess," Jake admitted. "Just ... exploring where we could, talking to people." Wishing for Roland's gun back. Intact. Wondering if it would happen, deciding it didn't matter as long as the gun was safe somewhere. In some when or where.

There are other worlds than these.

Jake shivered a little, the words echoing back at him from a time months past, and a lifetime ago. "Trying to figure this place out, I guess," he added quietly. "Not having much luck there," he admitted.

"Uch luck," Oy echoed, shaking his head to the negative as he fell into step beside Jake.

He nodded. "I guess exploring is a common thing to do." He still felt foolish, but at least other people were out there looking. Maybe he'd still find a place to put together.

David nodded again. "Yeah. I'm still not sure what our captors think they are going to learn." He paused, thinking, before speaking slowly as memory came to him. "It almost feels like a series of experiments done in my world, called behavioral tests, where people were isolated and subjected to extremes of ideas or temperatures and events. But it was all voluntary then." Though he'd heard of involuntary tests too. He shivered.

Jake nodded slightly. "I'm not sure they're out to learn anything," he admitted. "I think they're doing this because they can, plain and simple. There might be some official-sounding reasoning and theories and hypotheses, but ... ultimately, I think they just want to see how much it takes to break a person."

If what he'd heard was any indication, they'd gotten a little more intense about it shortly before his arrival.

It wasn't like he didn't have experience with things like this. People doing things because they could. He glanced over to David, offering him a smile in the dimness of the false half-moon. "Guess we'll see," Jake offered conversationally.

David listened, and walked, feeling somewhat foolish, and tired. What a rather wretched day.

"Hm, yes. I suppose we will."

He glanced around as they walked. "I'm still curious to see if they will keep their promises about sending some people home, and returning powers and weapons, especially now that we have a day."

He rubbed his face, unsure.

Jake shook his head and shrugged. "I hope so. That ... the gun I arrived here with. It ... was my father's gun. I'd really like to have it back." He realized that 'his father's gun' could refer as easily to the Ruger, but that wasn't what he meant. He meant his true father's gun. Roland's gun.

"I don't ... think they're sending anyone home though. I think if anyone goes missing, they've got them somewhere else." He hoped people went home, even if he wasn't among them, but he gathered from the looks, the tension, the murmurs, that no one thought it was a genuine offer.

David listened. "Yeah. Doing so doesn't seem their style. More like a trick. Now, the question is, what will they be doing with them?"

He didn't want to know, really. And yet... he believed they would not be treated well.

"This all feels like it's leading to something else, a trick of some kind."

He shook his head. "Think that's something best not thought about if it's nothing we can do anything about," Jake replied. He wasn't terribly close to anyone here yet, but he knew some people were. He felt for them, should they lose someone they were close to.

Maybe they would go home. Maybe they would be horribly tortured to death. No one here was going to know, if someone did go missing.

"Maybe it is," he agreed amicably as the hotel drew closer as they walked along. "Nothing to do but ride it out, right? Or try to fight back." He wondered if anyone was. If it was possible.

David nodded. "Right. I just hope it goes well."

He rubbed his face with his working hand, then glanced around. "Thanks, for the rescue and the escort. Hopefully one of the others who is good with medicine is around."

And not in the mood to lecture him.

"Did you want me to go wake up Dr. Tam for you? And have him meet you up in the infirmary?" It seemed the least he could do rather than send a guy with a broken arm on a quest to wake up the doctor. Who ... might be in Kaylee's room as easily as his own, but Oy could sniff him out and David might not know where to look for him.

"It's no problem," he offered.

David opened his mouth, then closed it. "Yes, if you wouldn't mind. Might as well get this over with."

He smiled a lopsided smile. "I'll meet them at the medical area." He'd learned where it was over time, though he hadn't spent any time there.

Jake nodded and lifted a hand in a wave before he started off to go send Simon down to the infirmary. He supposed it had been David's good luck that he'd been outside tonight, otherwise ... who knew what might have happened?

With his hands in his pockets, Jake made his way into the stairwell, trusting that David could get to the infirmary himself, and from there, he trusted that the good doctor could handle things.

David sighed and headed for the infirmary, nice and slow. And yet, even though he despised the pain, he almost took a pride in it. For it meant he was without the Monster, even if only for a short time...
