RP: Merlin's Circle
Characters: Dave, Remus
Time/Date: afternoon, September 6
Location: open area about a mile from the hotel
Warnings/Rating: None
Summary: Dave draws a circle, even if it won't do him any good
Status: Complete

Dave did not have his ring. Dave did not have parts of his Incantus -- but he had some of it. He had a picture of the circle, and it was something to do. He could work his magic without his ring -- usually. But not here. At least he wasn't alone in that though; no one else could work their magic, either. Like they were really going to attack each other. Please.

He hadn't really made much of an effort to seek out Balthazar. He was a bad liar, and he really didn't want to deal with any questions about his defeat of Morgana. And everything that happened afterward. It was easier to just let him assume that Morgana was dead, and that Veronica had gone with her. Somehow. He wasn't sure why that seemed like the best idea, but it was what he'd settled on for now. To spare Balthazar the pain of ... knowing that he'd get her back but couldn't have her right now. Somehow it just made sense not to share any of that.

Dave just wished he'd never known that he'd gotten together with Becky. It would make being here, away from her, easier. Speaking of Becky though, he dropped one hand to rest on the wound on his side. The doctor had patched him up, and for the most part he was fine. Except when he stretched or slept funny. He hadn't seen the girl since then, but no big surprise there. He kind of hoped he didn't see her again, especially if she was going to stab him again. That had been less than fun.

Carrying what was left of his Incantus out to one of the open spaces of the island, he snagged a stick on the way. There probably wasn't a point to this. At least, not right now. But there might be a point later, and hell, it wasn't like he was doing anything else interesting right now.

Finding a cleanish spot with minimal scrub-grass growth, Dave held the book in one hand, the stick in the other, and began to recreate the pattern of the circle in the dirt.

Remus had decided to go for a walk to clear his head. All of this was frustrating, not to mention confusing. And now apparently magic had stopped working.

He paused at the edge of the area where he spotted a young man drawin some kind of circle. Not wanting to interrupt, Remus turned to head off in the other direction. Remus glanced over his shoulder as curiousity got the better of him and he called out, "Hello?"

Dave glanced up as someone wandered over, but since the guy hadn't seemed all that interested (and who would be, really? Grown man drawing circles in the dirt with a stick. What was interesting about that?), so he let it go until he heard the guy calling out a hello.

"Oh, hi," Dave called back, pausing with his drawing. He knew himself well enough to know that multitasking was right out, and that he couldn't draw and talk at the same time without messing up one or the other.

He could, contrary to popular belief, walk and chew gum at the same time. But only if he was careful about it.

"I'm just drawing a circle. In the dirt," he said, bobbing his head a couple of times in a nod. "In case that's what you were going to ask next."

"I figured that part out on my own," Remus replied with a friendly smile. "Now I suppose the real question here is if you're drawing it for fun, or if it actually serves a purpose."

He walked over closer, careful not to disrupt the lines the young man had drawn. "I'm Remus... Remus Lupin."

"Dave Stutler," he introduced himself. He started to extend his hand to shake only to recall he was holding a stick in one and an Incantus in the other, so he shrugged a little sheepishly.

"It ... does not serve a purpose, right now. Not while we're all ... " His nose wrinkled slightly. "While we all have our magic blocked."

He grinned. "But I have high hopes that once we have it back, it will be a proper magical circle, and it will help with the ... the casting. Of spells. Assuming they give me my ring back."

"Believe me, I understand. My own magic isn't working either and my wand is missing."

Remus smiled and nodded politely, noticing that Dave's hands were full. "So for your magic, do you always have to draw the circle and work a complicated casting?" he asked curiously.

"For us, most wizards and witches just use their wand and the appropriate word... usually latin based. And there are some of us who are skilled in varying degrees of wandless magic."

"I don't think ... anyone's magic is working?" he said, his eyes squinting a bit before he grinned. "There was the note ... about us ... and the ... going home..." he waved the stick slightly before he grinned again.

"We don't, actually. Balthazar has the same kind of magic that I do," he said. "Or I have the same kind he does, technically, since he was here first and all. But we don't need the circle. Just our ring. Which ... I also don't have right now. Because it wasn't enough to just ... block our magic. They had to take away our rings."

He nodded slightly, a little smile creeping across his lips. "I've talked to Lily a little bit. She's your sort of magic, right?"

"I don't think it's going to be that easy for us to jsut go home. We were brought here for a reason, so I doubt they'll just send us back." Remus frowned, turning the matter over in his mind as he considered it.

He arched an eyebrow. "Balthazar... the dark haired one, correct? And yes... Lily's the same kind of magic as me. We both attended Hogwarts together when we were younger. In our world, there are schools where young wizards and witches learn their magic and skills."

"Right, I'm just repeating what they told us," Dave said, a grin on his lips. "They said they messed up and some people are being sent back home.

"Whether or not they expect us to believe that ... well." Dave shrugged elaborately, nearly unbalancing his book. A creative bit of weaving managed to keep him all in balance, and he had a rather proud expression on his face. Minor win though it was, he hadn't dropped anything.

"Dark haired ..." Dave squinted and weaved his head back and forth. "I guess, yeah, it's kind of dark." He paused a beat. "He's crazy. That's the descriptor I'd go with." Sure, he respected the older sorcerer, but that didn't mean he couldn't rib him now and again. Besides, Balthazar had all but admitted to being insane.

"It would be nice, if I had a school. All I have is Balthazar, and he's not exactly the best teacher I could ask for, but hey. Beggars and choosers and however that goes."

"And I think they're lying," Remus replied, matching Dave's smile with one of his own.

"Crazy... a wise wizard I knew back home was often referred to as crazy. But sometimes, it's just because people don't understand them or know what to make of them. And the line between brilliance and insanity is a fine one indeed."

"Well, obviously," Dave said, wondering if he said it only because he felt like he was expected to. Not that he disbelieved or believed either way. It was apparent their captors were shady, but he thought arguments could be made both ways for the absence.

A stronger one toward the side of 'they'll be taken to a lab and horribly tormented' for sure, but he could see it as a mistake, too. Maybe. He guessed he'd have to see who was taken -- like he'd know any of them from Adam.

"Yeah ..." Dave said. "He's definitely a little hard to understand." And crazy. But he supposed he wouldn't stand here and quibble about Balthazar's state of mind.

"Have you known him long?" Remus asked curiously. He didn't know much about the other residents and for the most part had been keeping to himself. The less people who knew he was a werewolf, the better.

"Balthazar? Longer than he's known me, but honestly, not that long. We ... ah. We were pulled here from slightly different points in time, and a lot happened in the span of a few days." He lifted his brows and nodded. "It's all very interesting, knowing things he doesn't. Things I probably shouldn't tell him, and kind of don't want to anyway. We ... haven't done a lot of hanging out since we've been here."

He smiled, and shrugged, and looked down to his half completed circle. The desire to complete it had sort of fled, especially since it would be useless, anyway.

Maybe he'd come back if they got their powers back, assuming he wasn't sent home, or whatever.

"So, I'm going to ..." he nodded toward the hotel before he closed his Incantus. "Head back inside. Maybe try this circle thing when I can actually do something with it."

"It was nice meeting and speaking with you," Remus said, smiling warmly.

"Once our magic does return, let me know if you ever need any help or just want to compare notes on how our abilities differ and are similar," he suggested.

"Or even if you just wanted someone to talk to. I've been keeping to myself far too much since I've gotten here."

"Sure," Dave agreed with a grin before he turned away, tucking his Incantus under his arm and tossing the stick to the side. He wondered if Balthazar would wander out and see the half-done circle, but maybe he'd finish it up or something.

"I'll keep that in mind," he promised with another wave before he started back toward the hotel. He wondered if their magic would come back when they promised it would, or if everyone was going to be pretty well screwed from here on out.

Oh well. It wasn't like there was anything he could do about it either way.
