RP Useful Hacker
Characters: Edward, open to Luke Skywalker and Professor Snape (seperate threads please)
Time/Date: Evening, 9/2
Location: Lobby
Warnings/Rating: Ed's kooky
Summary: Ed lends Snape and Luke a hand.
Status: Semi open, ongoing

Ed had her gear and her goggles since she had promised Luke she would explain the VR goggles as she was perched in the lobby. Her flaming red hair and cheerful smile (in spite of everything and her worry for Spike and Faye) was in full bloom as she watched for the two men she had spoken with on the network. But she was excited to help Luke with his lightsaber and to lend Professor Snape a hand with his laptop, in a way she was feeling useful again.

But for now she propped up her ankle, still healing from hitting some stairs wrong during the Reaver attacks and waited for the two she would assist.

Another ginger. The place seemed to be crawling with them. Not that Severus minded, especially. Quite the contrary. But if this one wanted to fix his laptop for the fun of it, and he could enjoy the scenery whilst she did so, it seemed like a fair enough trade. Anything to keep from having to lean so far across the desk to type, since he'd had to prop the thing open against the wall for the past few days. His shoulders had been complaining non-stop, even since. To the point that he had almost considered seeking out Lily's friend for a massage. Almost. He wasn't quite that desperate for human contact just yet. That little interlude with Dr. Scully in his room the other day could probably tide him over for another decade, at least.

He shook his head at himself when he realized that he was actually hoping for a repeat. Not likely, unless another horrid chapter from the book of his life was broadcast soon, he imagined, and then it would only be because she was taking pity on him. Was that really what he wanted? Her pity? He really couldn't fathom the idea of it being anything beyond that. Because that would have meant she cared, and no one cared about him. No one had cared since his fifth year at Hogwarts, when he'd called his one friend in the world that word and assured that no one else would ever care about him again.

Lost in his thoughts, Severus didn't notice that the lift had come to a stop until the bell dinged and the doors slid open. He'd been thinking about Dr. Scully a great deal ever since then, and it was all folly, he knew. He simply wasn't accustomed to kindness, and that was all it was. She had been kind. He shouldn't read too much into it, or indeed read anything into it. Any more than he should read anything into this offer to fix his laptop. Which he didn't. Clearing his throat, Severus stepped out of the lift, and headed out into the lobby, the laptop held against his chest, and he peered around for ... a red-headed girl who looked like she enjoyed fixing things.

He spotted her soon enough, since she had mentioned some goggles, and as he drew closer, he noticed that she wasn't merely lounging. She appeared to have been wounded -- probably in the last attack. That was unfortunate, and he only wished he'd had the ingredients for ... well, any potion, to be honest. Instead of dwelling on the poor girl's leg, however, Severus offered her a small smile. "So, are you the one who enjoys fixing things?" he asked, raising an eyebrow.

"That would be me!" Ed called with her usual cheer intact. She waved the goggles as she spoke,"You would be the one with the computer screen that wants to fall down? Its a pretty routine problem so a simple enough fix." as she fished for her bag of tools.

"That would be me," Severus echoed with a chuckle, finally unwrapping his arm from around his fallen laptop quite so protectively and handing it over. Then he took a seat a few feet away from her. "If it's a routine problem, you won't mind if I watch?" he asked, eyebrows rising. Because he had no wish to make her nervous, but he did find it all rather fascinating.

"Not at all and feel free to ask me questions too." Ed had to smile. "Its nice to finally be useful since I was kinda useless during the attacks, twisted my ankle on some stairs after grabbing my gear." she confessed.

"I will, then," Severus answered with another smile of his own, because hers was quite infectious, to be quite honest. Though it faded somewhat when she mentioned being useless during the recent attacks. He rather wished he had been there, if only because he wouldn't have been entirely useless. But that was neither here nor there.

"I do have one question, already," he said a moment later, after licking his lips. "But it doesn't have anything to do with laptop repairs, I'm afraid. How did you get a name like Edward? Because, to be perfectly frank, you don't look like any Edward I've ever seen."

"I don't mind actually, Edward from what I was told was a family name. Never knew the details in spite of the research." Ed explained as she worked. She hoped it would be left at that since only a select few knew Edward was not her real name, she had made up the name before joining the Bebop.

A family name? For a boy, perhaps, and this Edward ... could never be mistaken for a boy, her predisposition toward technology notwithstanding. Severus shook his head at himself when he realized the direction his thoughts had been taking. All it took was a pretty ginger to turn his head, for as long as he could remember. But this ginger, like Lily, was far too young.

"I see," Severus answered with a nod, deciding to let the matter drop. He didn't want to distract her too much from the repairs she was doing, after all. "My mother had a fascination with Roman emperors, so I suppose I should count myself lucky that I wasn't named something like Quintillus or Diocletian."

As she worked and fished for a screwdriver Ed observed,"Just from the sound that may be a good thing, but for me that's really the only detail I have." leaving it at that. But she was also curious,"I know you come from a different time than me plus I'm curious, what is different?".

That ... was a surprisingly difficult question. Without having visited her time, Severus would be hard pressed to note the differences, but he would give it a go, regardless. Because, after all, the wizarding world was almost ridiculously behind the Muggle world in his time, in terms of technology, at least.

"Well, there were no laptops, for one thing," he answered with a slight shrug. "At least where I came from. There might have been some in other areas of the world at the time, but the wizarding world is ... a bit old-fashioned, by comparison." Which suited him just fine, to be honest, even if Edward might find the idea a bit baffling.

Edward was a bit taken aback, no computers? "For someone like me not having a computer around would be a scary prospect." Ed confessed. "But at the same time I'm curious, since for me things changed after the Gate Accident are we thinking along the same lines?"

"I imagine so," Severus said with a nod. A computer was the major tool of her trade. Probably close to how he might feel without his wand. Before he had a chance to comment further, however, Edward said something else regarding ... a gate accident, if he heard her correctly. "What was the gate accident?" he asked, eyebrows rising.

Luke wandered downstairs, thinking, and hoping that Edward really could make a training saber. It would be nice to see someone else have the skills. He had the specs, and a low grade crystal, so it should work...

He came out into the lobby, and smiled, seeing the undoubtedly Edward shaped woman.

"Edward?" He came forward with that same smile, hopeful, utility bags on his belt, as well as his saber.

"Over here Luke!" Ed signaled via a wave of her hand, which held her VR goggles. "You told me over the network the basics but I'm so curious since its a new challenge for me." as she made room for him,"PLus if my guess is right we're close in age, I'm 19."

Luke smiled as he headed in that direction, the goggles getting a curious stare, and her words getting a wide smile.

"Yeah! I'm 19, too! That's pretty awesome!" He came forward and looked around.

"Is there a table we can use?" He wanted to lay out the instructions and basics for her, visually.

"Already grabbed a table too!" Ed's smile was catching as she hopped off the chair and headed for the claimed table. "What year? I'm from sometime around 2077." she asked since to be honest she was curious,"I was on Jupiter for a freelance hacking job when I got yanked here."

He smiled and followed her. "Cool! I'm from 0 ABY. Everything changed after Yavin."

He settled to the table and took out his plans, looking for the start of them.

"Ah, you must be from a different setup than me. I don't know that planet."

"While I have no idea where your home is so we're both learning as we go." Ed had to smile. "So now I'm curious, tell me about your home and your time period and feel free to ask about mine too." she offered.

He grinned. "I had these translated, so I could show them to you." The plans detailed the internal part of the lightsaber, the computer core that controlled temperature, power, and blade size.

"My life was kind of crazy, a quiet early life, then the rest of it spent in war, never quite knowing if it would be a good day or a bad one. Everything seemed to be almost chaotic, but the Force linked us all."

He nodded.

"That always helps!" Ed had to smile as she looked over the plans and made notes. "As for me I was on a very different Earth, lots of falling rocks and that sort of thing post Gate Accident. But I became the hacker for a team of bounty hunters and I got to use my skills for good and I admit to cause a little chaos now and then. Got yanked here while on a freelance job and I miss the hacking part of things."

He listened, fascinated, and interested, grinning.

"What's hacking?"

Some words just didn't have translations in every universe, or at least right away known ones.

Thankfully Ed was ready with hopefully an answer that made sense,"Hacking for me using the computer to make another computer do what I want, usually to get a file or other bit of electronic info. So I guess you could call it electronic spying?" she offered.

He nodded, grinning. "Oh! Oh yeah! We had some people doing that to get the plans for the Death Star, so we could find it's vulnerabilities and destroy it. Without their work, we would have been sunk!"

He nodded, smiling. "I am definitely glad to meet you!"

"So in a way you were hacking but from a different direction!" Ed's eyes almost lit up at that. "But now I'm curious, what is the Death Star? But I'm just as happy to meet someone that thinks the way I do!" she was grinning.

He nodded, smiling a little, remembering, and almost afraid even as he remembered. "It was a battle station, bigger than a moon, and more powerful than a fleet of starships. It had the power to blow up entire planets, and was the tool of terror for the Galactic Empire, until we blew it up."

He nodded slowly. "It nice to meet someone who thinks the same." He grinned at her, warmly.

"Oh man." Ed finally could speak,"Totally different thing in my case, I was with bounty hunters and well most creative head from when I was with them besides Le Fou was maybe Brain Scratch." she mused. But her smile came roaring back,"I'm just as happy, figured I was one of the few who got electronics."

Luke wasn't sure what to make of that, but he nodded. "Well, hopefully you'll like this project." He gestured to the plans. "Basically, what it is is a small computer guiding the emission and control of an energy beam blade. This design is for a child's version, or a training saber."

He smiled.
