RP: Tired of the Games
Characters: Lily, Harry
Time/Date: after this, August 25
Location: Kitchen
Warnings/Rating: Tired, annoyed Lily?
Summary: Lily isn't sure who the conversation was meant to attack, but is displeased all the same
Status: Complete

First Jaime, and now her. This had the distinct feeling of someone jabbing at the workings of their leadership trio. She imagined Tyler was next ... unless they simply didn't see him as enough of a threat to do things like this to him. From what Lily knew of his home life and school life, aside from a few fights with his friends ... he probably didn't have much ammunition for them to grasp anyway. That annoyed her as well, and she would like for there to be a period in which she was not annoyed sometime in the near future.

Still, hearing James' voice had done unsettling things to her. He was younger ... it was from their time in school before she'd seen that he'd grown up enough to be considered worth her attention. It bothered her still though ... she'd known he was like that, she still didn't approve, yet she'd believed herself in love with him enough to marry him?

She did love him. Of course she did. She had a son with him. She ... really wished she had some insight to their marriage though. Had it been a good one? Or had it been full of fights like that? She did still fight with him. Not every day, but often enough. Had she forgotten how immature and arrogant he'd been, somewhere along her sixth year? He hadn't truly grown out of it, had he?

Frowning, Lily decided she was over-thinking this. It probably wasn't what they'd meant to convey with that little blast from the past, anyway. She imagined it was set to dig at Severus, but why? If it was meant to dig at her ... well, it had done that, certainly, but ...

Lily sighed and shook her head and set about starting dinner for people who were interested in joining her. Most of the time there was a decent sized crowd, but she imagined Jaime wouldn't be down here tonight. That saddened her. No one should have their lives broadcast like that. No one. Private moments ...

... Lily wondered how many other private moments of their lives would be blasted across the network. It was not a pleasant thought. This place had definitely taken a plunge to the darker side of things, and she didn't like it.

Sighing, she pulled the big pot out from the bottom cabinet and half-filled it with water. They could have spaghetti tonight. It was easy to make, and ... she was fairly certain there was some frozen bread she could bake, too. And a salad. She could handle that. Maybe soon, she'd have to recruit some kitchen help though ... there were an awful lot of people here now.

"Remus is ... I believe from recently after he was a professor at Hogwarts. And yes, she's here, but she hasn't done much more - that I'm aware of - than post things on the network. So it's completley possible it isn't even her at all, just ... one of their games. Regulus is ... my age? Give or take? We didn't speak for very long when we did meet. And Ari is ... she's well enough. She has a friend a little younger than herself, so we ... just try to keep an eye on them." She was curious if Harry knew more about her, if Albus had told him anything, but ... that could wait.

A faint smile tugged her lips. "Severus is here. We crammed together a Wolfsbane potion for Remus ... you just missed the full moon." Which reminded her. "Love, there are other sorts of magic users here. We were thinking about getting together to practice some things this weekend, to see how our magic acted and reacted with theirs in case we ever needed to use wards or something to protect one another, if you were at all interested in participating in that."

She tipped the spaghetti into the pot once it was boiling, stirring it around a little before leaving it to work as she started on the sauces.

"It's good to see you, love, though I do wish the circumstances were other than what they are."

He muttered under his breath as he worked, and listened to her. "Okay, so, Remus is from post-third year, then, and Bellatrix is being quiet, which is more than one can hope for, and Regulus might still be a bad guy., and Ari is... oy. I wish Hermione was here." But he perked up and watched her more as she continued to talk.

Lettuce was shredded, carrots were cut, and onions and tomatoes were next on the list, as well as a bag of croutons... that he hoped were fresh.

"I hope it doesn't sound too bad that I say I'm glad I missed it. Seeing Remus do that once was bad enough. But maybe I can help next time." He'd learned a few things from chasing some of Fenrir's followers. Then he grinned. "Mom, I'd be glad to help. Not sure I can contribute anything with all of you there, but I'll try."

He nodded and whirled a hand, leaving the knife hovering above the onions as he went to hug her, to hug his mom. "Whatever the circumstances, we're together." He chuckled. "I wish Ron and Hermione were here, and Al and James, too. They'd all love to meet you."

"Well, he had his potion so he didn't go all furry, but ... he still didn't feel well." Which was understandable, of course.

She was unfamiliar with all the names save James' and her expression fell slightly before it occurred to her that he likely didn't mean his father. Perhaps a son?

"I wouldn't wish anyone here, honestly," she admitted. "I'd ... I'd love for your father to be here, but ..." She looked away. She couldn't well be the one to tell James he was dead, nor could she imagine what sort of tortures they'd inflict on him. No, it would be best if he wasn't brought here, ever. She did wish they'd stop bringing people all together, but for that she may as well wish they'd all be allowed home.

It simply wasn't going to happen.

She did smile as she returned his hug, rubbing his back lightly.

"After dinner, we should talk, and you can catch me up on your life," she murmured. "The lives of your friends, and ... and any people I might know," she decided.

"Good." He smiled at her. "I totally wouldn't wish them here, in that way, but... I've found that if you put me, Hermione, and Ron in a corner... the corner gives." Not meant to be boasting just simple truth.

That hug was awesome, something he'd been waiting for all his life. He sighed in it, and then slowly let go.

He nodded.

"Sounds good. We can talk about all of it. Anything you want to know, and somethings... that are amazing, you should know."

He bounced a little, almost returned to childhood just to see her.

"Thanks."

She wasn't surprised. What little she'd heard from Remus had indicated her son was exceptional. She did smile to him before she turned her attention to the sauces.

So they'd have dinner, and chat. Perhaps if it wasn't too crowded tonight, they could even cover some ground at the table.

She had so many questions, but there were a few she wasn't ready to touch on just yet. Like how his childhood was without her and James. It still struck her, now and again, what she'd seen on the video. She woke up some nights imagining James was dead beside her, and Lily shook her head to keep those thoughts from taking over.

No, it wasn't important now. He'd tell her other things, cheerful things.

Once she had the sauces settled and heating, she crossed to the freezer, pulling out the loaves of bread to pop them into the oven.

"So tell me. Tell me about your family," she requested softly.

He smiled, just letting the moment fill him. Here he was with her, his mom, after a lifetime of missing her, thinking about her, wondering, so much!

He had a million questions. So much to learn and want to learn and to find out.

"When do you come from? I mean... what year?" He wanted to know so much. Could be, he wanted to know too much, but he didn't care. This was his mom, and he'd take every second he could get, every piece of knowledge.

With the salad finished, he set the large bowl out, and settled back to lean against the other side of the kitchen, watching her.

"Okay." he took a second, gathering his thoughts. "I was married, quite awhile, actually, almost 25 years. We had three kids, two sons and one daughter, though we helped raise Remus's son also. Our kids are beautiful. James Sirius, Albus Severus, and Lily Luna are their names, in order of ages. Each one is stubborn, bouncy, energetic, prideful, and arrogant, and also talented, honest, brave, resourceful, and charitable."

He looked away, remembering the last time he'd seen them all. "I have some pics of them, upstairs, that don't move. Muggle pictures, gifted me by Hermione, a friend of mine."

He thought some more as he looked at her. "Each one is good at something. And I love them all very much. Then there's Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, who aren't blood family, but might as well be. They're my best friends, and the people who I never had to wonder were behind me." Well, except for that one time in school, but that had been silly, and not to be spoken of, they all agreed.

"February, of '79," she said. "Just ... just a couple of weeks before my ... our wedding." She hesitated. "I know what happens," she murmured as she glanced over to him. "In case you ... were going to try to skirt the issue. I know James and I are killed. I just ... don't know when." She offered him a slightly apologetic smile for even bringing it up, but ... if he was going to go out of his way to avoid mentions of it, she wouldn't put him through that.

While she didn't miss the past tense of married, she did pause a little at his middle child's name. Albus, she could understand, but Severus? Her mouth worked soundlessly for a moment and she thought there must be some story behind it, somehow.

Granted, she'd already started to get the impression that Sev wasn't exactly harboring anti-Muggle-born tendencies, but ... for her son to name his son - her grandson after him ... she was very curious to hear that story.

And Remus had a son. She was surprised he hadn't mentioned, but ... perhaps he didn't know? Perhaps it hadn't happened for him yet. Lily's first thought (and she wondered in the back of her mind what that said) was to hope they didn't exploit Remus' son somehow. To ... show him videos of his own death after showing him his son.

It caught up with her then, the implications. If they were helping to raise Remus' son ... where was Remus? Did he die before his son knew him? Was history reexerting itself on her friends as well? Lily swallowed hard.

Weasley she recognized, and she smiled a little. "Just how many kids did Molly have?" she inquired. "Lord she just had twins last year ..." and neither had been named Ron. She assumed it was Molly's son, anyway ...

Shaking that off, she smiled to Harry. "I would like to see the pictures," she admitted as she tried to digest the rest of what Harry had told her. It was quite a bit to process, after all.

"Ah... I was...I will be... hm. It happens in 1981... I was... a little over a year old." He shivered, remembering the scream, the flash of green, the laughter... he took a breath and let it out, then forced a smile.

"I was put in the care of... your sister." That... was a sore subject, so, moving on!

"Molly had 7 kids with Arthur... Bill, Charles, Percy, Fred, George, Ron, and Ginny." He smiled a little at her name, even now. Even if they had parted, it had been no evil thing. "Arthur and Molly were... they were almost like parents, in my teens, after things started happening."

His eyes darted to hers. "They told me all about you that they knew, and could remember."

He chuckled. "After dinner, then, we can go up there. Take a look. the people in charge here, they brought my work desk, paperwork and all. made sure there was no magic in it, of course, but left all the pictures and papers."

Lily nodded slightly, baffled that they'd brought the entire desk. Perhaps they'd simply recreated it? After everything else they'd done, why not a desk?

Still, she let the year burn into her memory. Nineteen eighty-one. So she'd be twenty-one, unless it was before her birthday. Dead at twenty-one. Lily shook her head and swallowed again.

"I'm glad," she said softly. "Molly's a lovely woman," she agreed. "And Arthur's a bit of a card. The few times I did meet him, he was very interested in aspects of Muggle life. Was he still?" she inquired. She preferred to talk about the happier things, and to ignore things like death, demise, and Petunia raising her son.

"Yeah. He fixed Sirius's bike up for me... when I inherited it. And Arthur had this awesome car, that flew. Saved my life and got me and Ron to school one time... even if we did get into trouble."

He chuckled. those were some awesome adventures, even if he was always afraid for his life.

He poked at her, almost hesitantly. "I don't know much about your life, and I'd love to know more."

She wasn't even going to ask how, exactly, he'd needed a flying car to get to school.

"I'm not sure where you'd want me to start," she admitted. "Or how much Petunia might have told you," she added. Though knowing her sister and how bitter Tuney had gotten ... she really did wonder what she might have told Harry.

Had she told him that Lily and Sev had been friends? Had she mentioned anything about her at all? Or was Harry more interested in hearing about school? Did he want to hear the silly things, like her and Mary and Cas sneaking into the kitchens just after Lily had been made a prefect, or did he want to hear the darker things, like her ongoing battle of wands and wits with Evan Rosier in her sixth year?

"It'd likely be easier if you started in with questions," she decided. "And then I can ramble from there."

He chuckled. "Petunia never said anything about you, except when she was criticizing you or dad..."

His lips twisted, then he smiled. "Uhm, well, how did you and Dad... er, decide to marry? I heard you two didn't like each other all that much when you first met..."

Well, she had asked what he wanted to know...

She smiled softly. "I imagine so. We got on like oil and water at first. It was only after ..." She hesitated. "Well, only after my sixth year, after I became friends with Remus that I was even willing to consider giving James the time of day."

She shrugged a little as she moved one of the pans of sauce off the burner. "I suppose it was one of those things that just ... happened. He was persistent and charming and beneath his arrogance, he did mean well." Most of the time, at any rate.

Still, her mind shifted back to the conversation so recently replayed. He had been a prick, hadn't he? How far out of it had he really grown? "I suppose, too, I was one of the only girls who acknowledged that Sirius was part of James' life, and taking one meant having the other around."

Lily shrugged as she stirred the sauce. "He proposed, and I accepted. And then ... I was dragged here."

He nodded eagerly, drinking it all in. Though he noted a little that she sort of sounded a little... not enthusiastic. he remembered a teacher telling him to beware asking questions if you are not prepared. Well... yeah. He nodded. "Oh, wow. Sounds pretty intense. When I knew Sirius, he was very focused and spoke of you both very fondly. Even... even Peter did."

He swallowed, not sure how much she knew. "Did anyone tell you what happened? How you died?"

"I saw the video of it," Lily said in a low voice. "I ... don't know how we were found, or why we were targeted, but I saw the actual ..." She swallowed. "I saw him die," she whispered before she turned her emerald eyes to her son. "I ... I heard myself, and I saw the flash as he killed me," she continued. "Remus ... Remus said you survived, because of me."

She smiled softly, apologetically. "I didn't mean to bring everything down. I just ... I'd just wanted to let you know I already knew."

Pulling the spaghetti pot off the stove, she carried it to the sink and tipped the contents into the colander. She rinsed the spaghetti off with cool water before leaving it to drain.

He winced and nodded. "I'm so sorry, mother."

He moved to her and enfolded her in a hug again. "Your love protected me for years, made a shield of your willingness to die, and kept me in it's heart. Without you, all would have been lost."

He kissed her forehead, feeling odd and yet somehow older, and more mature than he ever had. "You are the one who saved the world, not me."

He nodded and moved to watch her.

She wondered how that was even possible. It wasn't as though ...

Her eyes half closed. She'd heard a whisper, hadn't she, on the video? Stand aside ... She'd been focused on James' face, but ... no, there had been something. Her voice, begging, and his voice, telling her ...

"Why?" she murmured. "Why would I have been given a choice? If he meant to kill all of us ..."

Her head tipped curiously to one side as she regarded her son, wondering if he even knew. How could he possibly know?

He breathed slowly. "He was there to kill me, Mom. You and dad were just convenient object lessons, not his intended target. There was a prophecy, claiming I would be his end. And he was determined to stop me. Only in going after Dad, then you, he gave you time to put yourself between us, to make the choice and invoke the old magic, older than time and Merlin himself. And you chose, and you changed everything."

He shivered and he hugged himself. "You saved me, and the world."

Lily nodded slightly. She didn't disbelieve him, exactly - he was standing here, telling her about it after all - but it just seemed so completely surreal. That she could somehow do something like that. Because she chose to sacrifice herself for her son.

She stroked her fingers softly over his hair before she smiled and eased back a bit. She really should focus on dinner; they were surely going to have hungry people showing up soon.

"Well, I'm glad for that, then," Lily murmured to him.

It was still just short of amazing to see him here, all grown up. With a family of his own. Part of her wanted to meet his children - her grandchildren she'd never get to know in her life - but most of her didn't want them anywhere near this place.

Lily quirked a brow. Could he do that? Or moreover, would he be able to find the things required to create one?

"I imagine in time you'll be able to at least give me the general picture of things," she murmured before she started to prepare the serving dishes to set them out on the counters. It was simply how dinner worked around here. She cast a warming charm over everything so nothing would be cold when people came down, even if it was a couple hours from now.

"And I don't suppose I want to know all of it up front, so ... just be gentle with the information you give me."

Lily nodded. "I do ... manage to keep busy around here," she admitted. He'd catch on quick enough she was ... one of the leaders here. "But I will always make time for you, love," she assured him.

Gesturing for him to help himself to dinner, she made herself a plate and carried it to the table after snagging one of the bottles of water out of the fridge. A contented sigh crossed her lips as she gazed at him. How nice was this? Having dinner with her son.

"You'll find something to occupy yourself, love. I'm thinking about asking Sev to help me learn some new potions ... if he's interested in working with me. Swan's got a garden that she might want help with, and we're still working on repairs on the hotel. Besides that, there's always something going on ... with the people who kidnapped us. So you'll no doubt find something to do with that."

She picked up her fork, twirling some of the spaghetti on it. She was content enough to move away from such sour topics and to discuss lighter, more friendly topics.

"There's not much worth looking at. It's not a town out there, love. There's a couple of stores, and the rest are all ... just abandoned buildings. There's a line, which I strongly suggest you stay inside of, but otherwise ... everything that happens, happens in this building."

He pondered that while he ate for a long moment, and became aware as he did that people were wandering in. "I guess everyone's arriving. And younger than him. He cut off that thought. She was already awesome, from what he could see and had read.

"Well, we'll just have to make it a better situation, now." He nodded. He bent the rules at home, and had broken them against Voldemort. Whoever the people in charge of this place were, they had a lot of thinks coming if they thought he'd just bend knee.

Lily smiled, reaching out to take Harry's hand, squeezing it gently. "I know it's selfish of me to say, but ... I am glad you're here, Harry."

There was one bright spot to this mess. This was the only way she'd ever be able to see her son grown, but she did wonder if they hadn't put him here just to take him away again. She tried not to think on that too much, but they'd already proven to be sadistic bastards. So why not pull a trick like that?

Lily shook her head, turning her attention to her dinner, content to lapse into silence for now and talk properly with him later, once the kitchen had cleared out some.
