RP: Criminals
Characters: Spike, Parker
Time/Date: Late afternoon, August 23
Location: Parker's room (403)
Warnings/Rating: Language, most likely
Summary: Spike and Parker meet for a discussion.
Status: Wrapped Up/Complete

Spike had a strange view of Parker, and it was only becoming stranger now that she'd called him to her room to talk about... something that apparently involved the fact that they were both criminals by technicality. She reminded him a little too much of Julia, to the point that he'd spent most of their raid not looking at her; but, at the same time, she was a competent woman. She was good at what she did and lacked the obnoxious attitude he so hated in women. So he considered her an ally, felt somewhat protective of her, and still tried to keep his distance all the same. Obviously, the latter wasn't working so well. Otherwise, he'd not have agreed to meet her for whatever discussion she had in mind.

When he reached Parker's room, Spike 'knocked' on the door by giving it a light kick. "I hear there's a thief who wants to talk," he said - only as loud as necessary for her to hear him through the door.

"Door kicking, now that is an enterance." came Parker's semi pained call. But she was able to get up to open the door, dressed in jeans and a shirt that covered the nasty bruises from the Reaver fight and her passing out. But she had done too much thinking, she could see some of Eliot in Spike and she could hear the voices in her head saying she had to talk. "Let's start with the no brainer: we're both criminals. I steal and you go after people for a living. Granted different POVs but its like you get me, outside the team at least."

But anyone could see the damage that had been done to the younger woman: besides the bruises she had basically slept the 2 days post Reavers away.

"Get used to it." Spike offered a small smirk, but it faded quickly as he observed Parker. She looked... rough. Though he couldn't see the true extent of her injuries, he saw the lack of sleep in her eyes and heard the pain behind her voice. Apparently, not everyone was as capable of catching sleep amid chaos as he was.

When she once again brought up that they were both criminals, this time with elaboration, he raised an eyebrow and gestured toward the inside of her room with a simple nod - silently requesting permission to enter. For some reason, he doubted their conversation was fit for having out in the middle of the hallway. "Yeah, I get it. No fun in being a good guy," he teased, though his expression remained mostly serious. "What's this about, anyway?"

Parker nodded it was ok to come inside.

She finally came out and said it,"You never looked at me the whole riad, its like I'm something from the past and you just won't tell me." Parker knew people from being around the team and she had picked up on those very small cues, having learned from Sophie about that before things royally hit the fan.

Spike had barely made it into the room when Parker spoke again, and his initial reaction was to stop dead in his tracks, staring wide-eyed at the wall. Slowly, however, he turned to face her... with his best attempt at a 'I don't know what you're talking about' expression. He was used to people who kept such observations to themselves, not people who called him out on his little quirks.

"There's nothing to tell you, that's why," he lied. Though he chose then to look directly at her, there was definitely something lingering behind his mismatched eyes. Something that would easily betray his lie if she looked closely enough. "I had a job to focus on. Not you."

"Just level with me, not asking for much." Parker went with something she had seen used on jobs. She finally whispered,"You're looked at a woman who is seen as a nut beyond her team and well the raids were the first time in weeks I could be useful. I also believe in being honest with people you work with, the team taught me that too."

She knew something was going on but what?

That was when she turned wrong and hissed in pain, the rib was healing but not fast enough for her.

Spike forced out a deep breath he hadn't quite noticed he'd been holding and half-shrugged. "I'm sorry you're crazy," he offered with much sarcasm, still refusing to be completely honest. What was he supposed to do? Tell her that she looked so much like his lost love that he couldn't stand to look at her more than necessary? Tell her the whole, sad story of why he wasn't still a cold-blooded killer? Those didn't seem like appealing discussions.

But then she moved wrong, and Spike couldn't help but look hurt by her pain. Somewhere in his subconscious mind, he undoubtedly saw Julia in her place. As quickly as he'd reacted, however, he forced himself back into the apathetic state and looked away. He knew the thin veil of cover was blown, but he still didn't want to get into the messy details. So he looked away for a long moment, contemplating just how to approach the topic.

"A man who shares all his secrets," he finally said, "is a dead man." So it was avoidance to the extreme, but it was something. He just wasn't completely convinced that Parker would stop pressing for more information, and he wasn't sure how long he could pretend to think she was crazy.

Parker decided to leave it at that for now, she could pick for more when the time was right. "Same thing could be said for us thieves." she finally whispered as the most recent round of pain passed. "Passed out at the height of the fight and bruised a rib in the process." she finally confessed, but then she left out the running on fumes portion of the tale.

Spike watched her carefully, and found it fairly difficult to believe that a professional thief who was still seemingly in one piece and capable of standing on her own had simply passed out in the middle of a fight.

"You passed out?" he asked with disbelief. Maybe it was true, but he had a feeling there was a reason beyond just randomly losing consciousness. Then again, he wasn't exactly playing the 'share personal information' game at the moment. He didn't suppose he really had a right to know the details beyond what Parker was willing to admit at the moment. Not that it would stop him from asking, anyway...

"What the hell could make you do that?"

"Call it a lack of no sleeping thanks to the dreams, a very slutty costume and the snuff festival video among other things. It just came to a head and I just hit the floor, pretty rare as it is and yes I could hear the team lecture inside my head while spending the last 2 days sleeping." Parker spilled most of what happened.

If Spike hadn't noticed the slight similarities between himself (let alone Julia) and Parker before, he noticed them now. He was no stranger to seeing people from the past when he was unconscious, even if not in the same manner Parker described. "You could have been... killed," he muttered, choosing the less disturbing of options with which to end the sentence. Just beyond his words, there was a very subtle hint of being glad that she wasn't dead. Whether she picked up on such a thing would depend on just how much attention she paid.

Spike moved to rest some of his weight against the nearest item of furniture as a means of subtly avoiding the chance of doing just as she had for reasons more related to making himself active long before he should have. After looking at the floor for a while, he finally turned his attention back to Parker and decided that it wasn't right to keep her completely in the dark if she was willing to share details with him, as well.

"Her name was Julia," he said, forcing an uncomfortable noise close to a scoff. "She was... someone I worked with... before I became a bounty hunter." The faintest of smiles crossed his expression at the thought of the time they'd spent together, but it was short-lived.

"I flew solo, at least before the team came along." Parker finally revealed. "So for you Julia was what the team is for me in a sense?" hoping she made sense on at least some level.

She confessed,"Most of the time the team would keep me balanced and on track, but here I'm alone."

Spike shook his head slightly. "Julia didn't keep me on track," he admitted. "She... took everything I knew about life and turned it around." Though what he said seemed like something fit for frustration, there was a vague hint of a smile in his expression. What could he say? He loved the woman, even if she was bad for him in so many ways. "Like my missing, other half... or a really good dream."

He slipped his hands into his pockets (with a slight cringe caused by the movement) and scoffed, easily slipping back into the state of apathy. "Dream's over. There's nothing I can do about it."

"The same could be said for me in a sense, just with 4 someones instead of one." Parker was honest. She shudded at a fresh wave of pain as she spoke,"Ok, maybe trying to move was not the best of ideas but going a little stir crazy since besides no rigs there's nothing I can do here." her confidence having taken a hit thanks to passing out in public among other things.

Spike couldn't help but to chuckle a bit at Parker's expense. He didn't mean to seem cruel, but she reminded him so much of himself at that moment...

"I know," he said. "It's like being in a room full of bullets when all you need is a gun." He scuffed his boot against the floor and half-shrugged. "Can't say I didn't like the action. Psychotic cannibals come out to play, and suddenly there's something to do... Even if that something brings you closer to death, it's something." Spike had strange logic, but to him it made perfect sense.

"I should have gone out there Friday," he added under his breath, though he knew he'd have never made it much farther than the door.

"Going on that raid for weapons was the first time I could steal anything since being dumped here. Even back flips over those lasers felt amazing after the forced break." Parker was honest. "Its like I'm me when I get to swipe things and I think the lasers were rigged, like they knew what I can do."

She whispered,"Should have done more than 2 raids."

"And I don't feel right unless I've got someone to shoot at," Spike said, being perhaps a little more honest than he intended. It slipped out, when he'd intended to use the less direct 'something to destroy' instead. "Kind of wish the people around here weren't so easy to tolerate." That... was intentional, and said in a joking tone. He wouldn't actually go around killing people who hadn't crossed him unless something put him into a terrible mood. Just to emphasize the point, Spike offered a small smirk.

When Parker mentioned that she wished she'd done more raids, he eyed her curiously. He was tempted to offer that they pull off another raid together, but there was really no point and neither of them were in good enough condition. Instead, he seized the opportunity to try to learn just a little more about her.

"What's your best score, Madame Thief?" Spike really needed to get out of the habit of using a nickname for Parker, but it came easily enough. Even if it was a slightly silly nickname.

"We just need action: you with guns blazing and me beating alarms." Parker mused aloud. "As for scores I'll offer two for now: with the team I grabbed a statue we rigged for a con while a Catholic mass was in progress. Little kid swore I was an angel of all things! Outside the team I pulled off grabbing a jeweled dagger during a cocktail party at a museum in Paris." happy to share some of her life as a thief.

(OOC: The stature grab is from "The Miracle Job" and the dagger grab is inspired by last week's epsiode)

"Guess we really are just criminals," he conceded - although he sounded rather proud of the admission. In any other circumstances, if he and Parker existed in the same time, they'd have made a good team. But that was neither here nor there, and Spike wasn't ready to admit that he rather liked having her as an ally so far.

"Hey, angels have to get rich somehow," he said after she'd explained her best scores. He wasn't sure whether he should offer any tales of his own accomplishments, as most of them were either confusing out of context or a little too telling.

Parker could only nod at that,"Just different means since you go after bad guys as a hunter and I steal things back from the same people." "But freaking that kid out was not on the menu but it actually helped since people really did think an angel swiped the stature and we did save a church in the process. As for the dagger that was just an awesome job." She then asked,"How about you, got a memorable bounty or two?"

Spike offered just the slightest hint of a smirk in an expression which could have easily suggested that he wasn't quite as good of a guy as implied; but he didn't speak the sentiment and was content to pretend he'd never given such an expression.

"Nothing quite so noble as saving a church," he said with a slight chuckle. In fact, he'd been guilty of quite the opposite at one point. "There was a rogue satellite. It... got lonely... and carved pictures into Earth." Spike was all too aware of how insane he had to sound, but it was too late to back out, now.

"Everyone thought it led to the legendary Radical Edward, so she... or he, or it, depending who you asked... was issued a bounty. We were certain we were looking for some boy with too much time on his hands, but then she showed up. Just... took over our computer and enlisted our help. So we went after MPU - that's what she named the satellite - to make a copy of it and turn in the AI for the bounty." He couldn't help but to laugh at the situation in retrospect; but it had been quite frustrating at the time.

"Bastards decided to deny payment because the suspect wasn't human... Then we found out that Faye made a deal with the kid. In exchange for helping us, she was supposed to become part of the crew. And there's no way to go back on an agreement with Radical Edward." He didn't seem all that upset about having been forced into dealing with Ed. In fact, he was rather fond of the 'kid' now. "So that's how I met Ed."

Parker's eyes almost bugged out, it sounded like something from one of Hardison's many dvds. But she had to admit, it was an unusual way to meet someone. "So cyber girl was behind Radical Edward and she named the satellite?" but Parker was smiling for once. "But she does remind me of Hardison, our hacker. Mostly in the quirks and skill, she would easily give him a mean fight." adding in little things about the team hacker.

"But being screwed over on the bounty is nothing new, same thing happened to us on the very first job". Parker then added in what happened when Dubenich screwed the team over,"But in the end we nabbed the plans, got our cash and well payback is always awesome."

"Not behind," he clarified, "she is Radical Edward. And yeah, she named the thing. That's the most normal thing she's ever done." It was a little strange to discover that Ed really did remind Parker of her team's hacker. The parallels between people he knew and people she knew were a little disturbing, really. He'd have expected people to be completely different in her time or world... or both, if that was the case.

"Payback would have been a waste of time," he said. "The ISSP is a fucking joke... but money is money, and very few people give a shit that it's all about who's on which payroll." In fact, Jet was one of the only people he knew who cared. So long as bounties were paid most of the time and there was something to do, Spike couldn't care less that a vast majority of the police were just puppets to crime syndicates. But then... he was biased toward just ignoring criminals unless their heads were worth something.

"She named it! That proves cyber girl is a skooky as I figured she is." but Parker was able to smile at that. "So how did she meet the dish in the first place?" being very curious about that aspect of the tale,"As for Faye would she be like what Sophie is to my team a la a grifter?" she asked.

She nodded,"On jobs I've seen things that could fit that mold." But at the same time she knew the team helped those that really needed the leverage,"Nate simply got fed up with the system since his former bosses basically killed his son by not giving a treatment the ok and well it went from there really." ready to add in more about the team since she had metioned Sophie and Hardison so far.

"You'd have to ask her," Spike said with a shrug... that didn't exactly end well. He was paying too much attention to the conversation to remember how much of a terrible idea the movement was; it took him a moment to regain composure to speak again. His left hand came to rest atop his injured shoulder, as if trying to hold it steady. "She knew MPU before she came to us. I would guess she tracked it down to clear her name or something like that."

He looked at Parker with disbelief when she called out Faye's niche rather accurately. "Yeah... something like that. Kleptomaniac shrew, grifter, same difference." It was far too easy to be mean about Faye; it was how their... almost-a-friendship worked. Whether Parker would understand wasn't something he considered.

After she explained a bit about Nate, Spike's eyes widened slightly. His hand slowly slid from his shoulder, and he looked at his fingers briefly to make sure he'd not done enough damage to cause bleeding. He'd already done so a couple of times... but this time, he was lucky. Or maybe the movement had hurt more than done any damage.

"Jet was a cop," he said finally. "One too many crooked dealings, and he was gone... Couldn't stand it anymore." Out of respect for his partner, Spike left out some of the more-personal details about Jet's past; but the gist of it was there and it was enough to show his superficial similarities to Nate. "You don't have a dog on the team, do you?"

"I may just have to." Parker cracked a smile. "But that would not suprise me in the least."

"Now I'm more curious since its like there are links abet little ones to our teams. I mean Sophie is a mean grifter but she quickly became team mom in the process." she confessed. But she also picked the worst time to shift position, sending a nasty blast of pain through her ribs. "But I think Jet would like Nate on some level.". But she could smile at the dog crack,"No dogs but we do have a faked painting that sets up our office space if that counts? And who found the dog?"

"I would pity the child born of Faye Valentine," Spike said with a laugh. "She'd probably eat the poor thing!" He found it hard to imagine Faye taking on a motherly role, and his mind didn't make the connection between her sitting at his bedside (couch-side?) whenever he was injured and the motherly sort of affection. But it wasn't as if he had abundant experience in just what mothers were supposed to be like. The closest he had to one was... had been... an arms dealer who sold magazines full of naked women as a cover job.

"Eh... I did..." Spike offered an 'oops, you caught me' sort of grin. "The damn mutt wouldn't go away, so I gave him to Jet." Well, that was the gist of it, anyway; and Spike didn't want to admit that Ein likely would have stayed behind if not dragged onto the Bebop. Nor would he openly admit that he actually liked the dog.
