RP: Lottery Winners
Characters: Jaime, Spike, Violet, House
Time/Date: Noon, August 14
Location: Room 1006
Warnings/Rating: None
Summary: The lottery winners meet
Status: Complete-ish
Notes: It is suggested you track this, so you know when it's your turn.
The "this" link should work, because I spent like, an hour trying to get it to function. If it doesn't, hit me up and I'll link to a download site. It is a .wav file, so as long as you've got quicktime or something that plays .wavs, you should be all set. Also, I'm not going to fuss toooooo much about posting order since we do have such whacky schedules; just do what you can.

When the "winners" arrive at the designated room, the door is ajar but not open.

The room has the standard layout, though instead of the usual furnishings (bed, dresser, nightstand, etc), there are four card tables arranged in the center of the room. Each table has a folded paper placard bearing the name of each winner. Behind each placard is a small pile of puzzle pieces, roughly 45-50 pieces.

House's puzzle
Jaime's puzzle
Spike's puzzle
Violet's puzzle

There is nothing else of interest within the room save the tables and the puzzle pieces. The bathroom and closets are all empty save for the absolute basic fixtures. When the lottery winners first come in, there is classical/elevator music playing softly through the speakers in the room. Roughly 10 minutes in, they hear this. It is repeated every 20 minutes until the winners leave the room.

Violet sat outside with her idea journal in hand, mostly bored out of her mind at having to wait. "Add in a few wires after finding some" making notes on her possible in room alarm system. "Ok change that, nothing state of the art is around the place so time to get creative" as she quickly realized her mistake. At the same time she hissed under her breath,"Someone better show up and soon". She fished a hair ribbon from her pocket, an old habit which was not going away anytime soon in her case.

She was also linking things from the network and the costumes showing up was her new project. "Least Ms.Cooper was able to stop me from seeing that video" she shuddered.

Jaime and Tyler had had a vicious argument in regard to her participation in this ... event. He said nothing had happened when he'd gone in, and Jaime pointed out that that was before they'd been shown videos of people's heads. Things had obviously amped up a notch or two, and she wasn't really inclined to become one of the heads in the jar.

Both Tyler and Lily had offered to come with her, though Lily hadn't exactly looked keen on the idea of becoming a head, either. In the end, Jaime declined their offer. Everyone else was probably going up alone, and she didn't want to look like a pansy. And she wasn't either. Not really.

But being a "winner" in any sort of lottery they were throwing didn't exactly leave her with any good feelings.

When she reached the assigned room and found Violet already there, the feeling of 'not good' only increased. It was one thing when their captors wanted to fuck with the adults, but she wasn't real thrilled about the idea of kids being dragged into it. Or even being here. She was half tempted to tell Violet to head back to her own room, but she didn't think she had any right to really interfere.

The most she could do was hope it was like Tyler had said - just some stupid forms to fill out.

"Hey," she greeted Violet quietly, shoving her hands into her pockets. Pale blue eyes shifted to the door, and the fact that it was open just a crack was somehow more ominous than not.

"Hey" Violet looked up from her notebook when she heard Jamie. "The door is making me curious but after the video Ms.Cooper warned me from I'm not so sure about things here" she finally confessed. But she finally asked,"Are you holding up? Those videos did a number on people from what I could see".

Greg wasn't going to go. He wasn't going to play into these foolish games, but, last minute, he found himself in the hallways, climbing to the correct floor. His curiosity always had the best of him... especially when he hadn't done anything productive in days. Weeks? He had lost count.

By the time he reached the door he knew he was in the right place. He saw people hovering on the outside... and he shoved the lottery ticket into his pocket. At least he wasn't the only one stupid enough to show. He softly glanced around... two women. Well.. one girl, one woman. His eyes immediately moved to the ajar door, and something flipped in his stomach. Nerves? ...Of course not. At least, none that he would admit to.

"...Looks like we're the lucky winners." He wasn't sure who else was going to show... Greg didn't know how they ran things here. His eyes moved to the door... and he stared for a long moment again before he muttered softly, "Should we go in? ...Are there any more people coming?" Why did it matter?

Because here, in this place, even Greg House didn't want to be alone in these hallways anymore.

Jaime shrugged a little to Violet's question. "I'm ... fine. I didn't get a personal video, so I'll count myself lucky." It was enough to hear about Lily's; she didn't need one of her own to live through. Not that anyone they could have filmed would really have had an impact on her; she wasn't the sort to have close relationships.

Glancing over when she heard someone else moving down the hall, and she couldn't help but imagine each of their heads in a jar. Jaime wrapped her arms around herself and shook her head to House's question. "I don't know. Tyler ... won a lottery once, and ... he said they just filled out some forms about their powers. He said there were four of them that time, but ... I don't really think that means anything. It's not exactly like anything's been sticking to a pattern." Maybe there'd be three this time, and two next time, or maybe there were supposed to be four and someone wasn't going to show up, or ... any number of things.

She was sickly reluctant to go in, if only because she'd spun the 'they're going to chop off my head, ha-ha' fantasy so deeply that she was utterly convinced they were on the other side of the door with machetes or something, prepared to do just that.

"I guess ... it probably wouldn't kill us, ha-ha, to wait outside for a minute or two," Jaime suggested. "Just to see if anyone else is going to show."

Spike wasn't certain about the concept of winning a lottery he'd never entered. After he'd shot the stockboy and made enemies with the she-minion, he almost expected to be walking straight into an ambush with nothing but his gun (sans one round, at that) and the clothing on his back to keep him from becoming either the next head in a jar or something akin to char-grilled. Yet, in the ever-confusing realm of his mind, something beckoned him to go. It was a mixture of curiosity and ego, a feeling that he wanted to see what he'd 'won' and - if an ambush was the case - let them know that he still wasn't afraid. Well, not enough to make his confidence or determination falter, anyway.

Thanks, in part, to his usual nonchalance and refusal to rush when not absolutely necessary, Spike was a little late. He arrived with his hands shoved into his pockets and his expression suggesting that he was only there because he had nothing better to do. (Which, actually, was accurate enough.) It came as a slight surprise to him that there were others waiting, but it also calmed his suspicions of an ambush just a little. Maybe they really had won something... in a place where money was meaningless. That could be interesting. (And it would be just his luck, too.)

He offered a half-hearted nod of acknowledgment toward everyone in general, noting that he only recognized one of them. Jaime. She hadn't been hit by anything personal yet, so her presence was one that made him somewhat uneasy. Would they really let her slide for so long, or was something amiss? The slightly-open door didn't help the paranoid side of him feel any better about the thought.

"Jaime," he said, using her name as an informal greeting. He glanced around for a moment then gestured toward the door. "We just going to stand out here all day?"

She managed to work up a little smile for Spike, shrugging her shoulders slightly. "Yes?" she offered. Going into that room was not something very high on her 'want to do' list, but she supposed ... they should get on with the show. "I guess ... not," she mumbled, tightening her arms around herself.

Tyler had said there were four the first time. So why not four this time, too? It was just past noon, so ... she figured this was it. Or whoever else wasn't going to show.

She bit down on her lower lip, and she made a slight gesture toward the door before tucking her hand back between her arm and her body. Someone else could open the door; she was not inclined. As she stared at the door, she thought she heard ... music. Something flute-y and piano-y, soft but kind of upbeat. No, nothing about this really sat right with her, but what, exactly, could she do? Walk away now?

She did wish her mutation worked a little differently than it did. She'd like to be able to know what was on the other side of the door just by thinking about it, but short of running through a list of 'find the blank' she wasn't in any position to make a discovery like that.

Violet finally spoke up,"I'll take a look inside first if nobody minds?". She moved with her notebook in hand towards the door and pressed an ear to it, hearing music. "Elevator music, mixed with classical" sounding like the scientist she was at times. She then opened the door to reveal the room.

Spike would have taken Jaime's unwillingness to open the door as an invitation to nudge it open himself if not for Violet asking to do so. He watched her with a slight curiosity, wondering just why she'd carried a notebook here... and why she seemed so eager. When she mentioned music, he half-shrugged. "Didn't much expect them to have good taste," he muttered before glancing toward Violet, then Jaime, then House.

He decided to walk inside, not seeing any obvious dangers or reasons to be weary. (And not wanting to let nerves get the best of him when a kid had already taken the initiative to show bravery.) There was a definite lack of anyone waiting for them, but considering what he'd almost been expecting... Well, that wasn't necessarily a bad thing.

"Looks like we're early," he said, running a hand through his hair as he continued to walk forward, toward the tables in the center of the room.

Jaime ... would rather have stayed in the hall. But if Violet could go in, then she could put on her big girl panties and go in, too. Especially since neither of them had been beheaded. "Are we? It said noon, and it's ..." She looked around for a clock and upon not seeing one, she shrugged. "Well, it was almost noon when I left my room so it's past noon."

How far past noon, she wasn't sure.

She looked at the innocuous piles of ... puzzle pieces? Seriously? Well, why not? Tyler had a form to fill out. They had puzzles to put together. Complete with nametags, she noticed. She was definitely not feeling good about this, though slightly better than she had been, now that she knew she wasn't going to be beheaded. At least, not right away.

"They're ... seriously cracked," she muttered as she glanced to the door to see if House was coming. "We should ... um. Okay, call me paranoid, whatever. But put something to keep the door from closing? I don't want to be stuck in here."

"I'm already on it." Greg muttered it under his breath as everyone walked inside of the room. He was busy looking up and down the halls, and his eyes finally fell on a small chair pressed up against the wall in the hallway. It was more of a stool, really, but hell, beggars couldn't be choosers, especially in a place like this.

He grabbed the small stool with one hand, holding it by the leg as he slowly moved back to the door with his cane in the other. He stepped in, never leaving the doorway with either his foot or his cane, and he finally placed the small seat against the frame to keep any unsuspected slams from happening. For the first time, his bright blue eyes lifted and looked at the room.

His gaze immediately fell on the puzzles.

It was almost pathetic, but he was actually pleased when he felt a sense of intrigue spread through him. He had been so damn BORED in this place that a simple puzzle seemed like a treat. What the hell had they done to him here?

He moved into the room and he nodded at Jaime, as if making sure that the chair was good enough... although they didn't really have anything better. He eyed Spike for a moment... he hadn't seen the man before, but he hadn't seen any of them before really. Save Violet. He picked up the nametag that had his own name printed on it, and he looked at the pile of puzzle pieces that were obviously meant for him. His eye was already picking out what went with what... He glanced over his shoulder and he finally spoke, to the room in general.

"Well apparently we have puzzles to do. How wonderfully creative." His voice was almost a drawl before he looked back, and after a moment had passed he placed his cane against the table and his hands started to move, picking out certain pieces and placing them in strategic order. He was already done with a large part of the frame on the right corner within minutes. Greg was always good at puzzles... that's why he hated them. Ridiculously boring. Perhaps he shouldn't have even put it together, but he hardly cared. He hadn't had anything good to do in days. He could do a puzzle.

Violet was working on her puzzle as she kept an ear open around her. "Puzzles? Lamest IQ test ever" she hissed under her breath as she worked. She usually got very bored with puzzles unless it was a science project but she figured play along with this one for now.

She confessed,"Anyone else thinking IQ test of some sort?".

Spike had to agree that blocking the door open was a little bit of a paranoid move, but he certainly didn't object to the idea. For all anyone knew, the door could have some sort of air-tight locking system hidden in it - one that couldn't easily be broken down or shot through. Better safe than sorry, especially when dealing with psychopathic abductors.

He found the table meant for him and sighed in slight agitation. Really. They'd won puzzles? Granted, he had nothing better to do; but he wasn't exactly thrilled about being called away to put together a puzzle. And it seemed to be a fairly easy one, judging by the relatively small number of pieces.

"An IQ test?" Spike glanced toward Violet then back toward the puzzle pieces, which he spread out individually. "They'd have to think we were idiots..." He found the edge pieces and began assembling them, choosing first to work with the top row - corner to corner. Why he even bothered to play into what he assumed to be a trivial game, he wasn't sure. Perhaps it was the curiosity to see if something deeper laid beneath the surface. After all, the assembled puzzles could be part of a larger puzzle... Or they could just be a means with which to waste their time.

"Maybe they're buying time to steal more stuff from our rooms," he suggested, only partially joking.

"Oh sh--shoot," Jaime said when Spike mentioned them buying time to steal things. Watching her language was hard, but she really didn't want to further corrupt Violet more than this place already had. She did flash House a smile when he propped the door open before she moved to regard her puzzle.

She did peer at the others puzzles as they worked, and sighed before she started on her own. "I don't know. I mean. IQ test? See if you can put together a ... what, elementary school puzzle?" She didn't get this, at all. It wasn't forms, but it was still kind of dumb.

Lapsing into silence, she frowned as she heard the music pause, and then Mal's voice. Very definitely Mal's voice, though what he was saying didn't make any sense. "M..." she started to say as she lifted her eyes toward the door. It was open, but he wasn't there ... and then she caught on that it wasn't actually Mal talking, because the voices had shifted to two she didn't recognize. So it was a recording of Mal, and Jaime did not appreciate the panic that shot through her gut. What if she was up here while they did something to Mal?

She inhaled kind of sharply before she swallowed hard. "Well, that was ... pleasant," she muttered in response to the recording. Her hands were shaking and she pressed them against the table. Maybe puzzles weren't the reason they were up here. She ached to put out a message to him, to make sure he was all right, but what was to say their captors wouldn't be the ones responding?

Jaime swallowed again, and lifted her hands only to wrap them around her middle. She hadn't wanted to come up in the first place, and what if she hadn't 'won' any damn thing but they'd done it deliberately? She hadn't thought they could find anything to break her, not like they could with Lily, but clearly they'd picked up on her stupid little girl crush on Mal, and were exploiting that.

She wondered what they were going to try to break Tyler with, and she batted her sleeve across her eyes before she tried to focus on her stupid damn puzzle.

He didn't know what was worse. The fact that the recording started to play, or the fact that he finished his puzzle in the middle of it. Greg stared down at the simple image of rifles in a case, and along with the recording, House felt an undeniable shiver dripping down his spine. He had no idea what reavers were, but he was FAR from stupid. Something was going to happen. He didn't know what, he didn't know where, and he had no idea who was going to be involved, but the fact that the four of them were picked out of this couldn't have been a good sign.

He was sure that their captors liked to play with their toys... switching clothing, twisted videos... but he didn't think that they would kill anyone. However, when he glanced over and started to see what the other puzzles were forming... pieces of weaponry here and there... he wasn't so sure.

For the first time, House was frightened to be there.

The voice of the recording was echoing through his mind and he stared over at the others, waiting for them to finish in silence... Reavers? From the recording, they didn't seem like nice creatures... it could be a bluff. But then again, the assholes who brought them here in the first place hadn't bluffed yet. They did everything they said they would...

"They're guns." He finally said aloud, but he waited for everyone to get close enough where they practically knew what it was anyway. "They're all weapons. Except..." His eyes slowly moved over to Jaime's puzzle, and his eyes widened before he walked over to her... he kept a distance, but looked over her shoulder as she worked. "...What the hell is THAT?"

"Weapons on this one too." Violet finally spoke once she finished her own puzzle. "It can not be Count Olaf." her voice trailed off thanks to a wave of bad memories. "But this looks to be a photo of a shotgun." she finally was able to speak after trying to unravel things in her mind. That was when she had a brainstorm of sorts.

"If nobody minds me asking does anyone use these sort of weapons on a daily basis? I'm just a science geek so I don't unless homemade inventions and weapons count." she simply started.

"Nice cover," Spike teased, amused at Jaime's self-censoring. He guessed it had something to do with the younger girl, but didn't really care enough to ask or challenge the behavior. He just went back to toying with the puzzle pieces, sliding them into their proper places. Though he was quick and the puzzle itself was fairly easy, he wasn't quite through when the music shifted into voices.

Something about the recording made him uneasy, and Jamie's near-reaction to the first voice didn't go unnoticed. He shifted uncomfortably, fighting the sudden chill that ran up his spine. Maybe it was all a head game, and he'd really like to believe it was, but given their captors' track record and the videos... He assumed there had to be some reason to not just brush it off as insignificant. Maybe it had nothing to do with them. Maybe it was some sort of glimpse into the pasts of other captives. But... maybe it was something more important. There were too many possibilities, so he did as usual and chose not to think about it. Or at least to try not to think about it.

Spike finished putting the puzzle together, keeping a vague watch on Jamie at the same time. Though they weren't necessarily well-acquainted enough to be friends, he knew enough about the girl to hate seeing her so distraught. She was the unbreakable one, and he didn't like seeing her resolve falter. He waited until he thought she might see him and offered a sympathetic sort of glance... before turning his attention back to the puzzle as if he'd done no such thing.

"Looks like a grenade launcher," he announced while putting the final few pieces into place. He wasn't completely sure, but from what he did know and a couple of educated guesses, it seemed about right. He stepped back and looked at House's puzzle, feeling just a little like the jerks in charge were just taunting them with images of what they'd love to have... Until, of course, attention was drawn to Jaime's puzzle.

He joined House by Jaime's table, though he got a little closer, and just... stared. "No clue," he muttered, running a hand through his hair in confusion. Whatever it was, he had a feeling that he wouldn't want to meet it. Or encounter it. Or whatever one did to things which looked like that before the image was even completely pieced together.

After only a short while, Spike wandered over to Violet's table instead, looking at her puzzle curiously. "That's... a pistol..." He didn't feel like too much of an ass for correcting her, but he had to wonder just where she came from or how stressed she was to make that sort of mistake. Maybe she was just nervous or from an existence where guns were very rare. He half-shrugged, not particularly caring about that detail, either.

He considered the question for a second, then added, "I always have one with me."

Realizing everyone was done and she was maybe half-done - though she had enough of the picture together that she didn't like it - she hurried to finish hers. Her hands were still a little shaky, her thoughts drifting to Mal, her eyes darting to the door. She didn't like this, and her gut twisted uncomfortably.

Once she'd finished, she studied her puzzle before she pulled out her Blackberry. She snapped a picture of hers before she moved to look at the other puzzles, taking pictures of those. She thought she'd pop them up on the network, maybe see if they made sense to anyone else.

"So ... guns, bullets, grenade launchers, and ... whatever my puzzle was." She wondered if her puzzle was reavers. If that's what they were being warned about. If that's what they were coming up against. When? Now? Tomorrow? Next week? Never, and the captors were just fucking with them?

"Paints a pretty picture, doesn't it?" she managed to get out before she rubbed at her eyes again. Putting her phone away, she wrapped her arms around herself and looked to the rest of them a little helplessly. She did gesture a little toward her puzzle so they could go see the other half of it. The half that hadn't been completely finished.

"Anyone have any thoughts?" she asked weakly. "I mean ... what ... is it just ... hey, we're throwing those things at you, don't you wish you had some guns? Or do you think ... it's just another headgame, like the video? It ..." Jaime licked her lips. "It was Mal's voice, on ... on the recording. It ... the first voice, I mean. I don't ... recognize the other two, but ... maybe ... they're ... some of his crew or something. I don't ... I don't know."

He didn't know what to think. He didn't know what to SAY. But when the other male in the room answered his question he couldn't help but mutter under his breath, "Whatever it is, I don't like it." He stood straight to give the girl; Jaime? Room to stand, and he backed up to let her take the pictures that she wanted to. His eyes didn't move from the puzzle... and he moved forward, his hand automatically moving out and slowly moving the remaining pieces in place, staring at the disfigured faces that glared and screamed up at him.

He pressed the last piece in place with his thumb and he stepped back slowly, and in that moment he realized that he made a terrible mistake... he underestimated his captors. Greatly. Greg never had a bad feeling about his own well being, even when he was taking the drugs that he was taking, but right now, he felt very sure that he was in danger. He could have been wrong... he HOPED that he was wrong... but whoever was keeping them in their guinea pig cage seemed to be preparing them for something terrible. And what the hell were they going to do, throw puzzle pieces at it?

"Well whoever the hell Mal is, someone better get into contact with him because apparently hes the only one who knows what... THAT is. And we really need to find OUT what that is before THAT finds us first..." He looked at the rest of them, staring for a long moment. "...You don't think they would send it after us.... right...?" They had screwed with everyones heads but... THIS... was way too far. physical danger?

"Neither do I." Violet's voice trailed off, not many knew about Count Olaf and it showed. "This does not scream Olaf so I must agree with Dr.House on this one, the more info and the sooner the better." she simply stated. She was also too scared to even state what else was going on inside her head.

Spike wasn't quite sure whether something so... disturbing could even be real, but if Jaime knew the first speaker in the recording, it was possible. Assuming that her puzzle was an accurate portrayal of the so-called 'reavers.' He didn't know, and really he didn't completely want to know. This whole thing was getting rather creepy, to the point that even he had to question just what would happen. Somehow, he found it impossible to believe that their captors would be happy with simple mind games forever.

"I think they would," he said, looking straight at the other man when he spoke. "Would you settle for idle threats when given the opportunity to play God?"

"I'll talk to him," Jaime said. "See what I can find out and ... talk to Lily and Tyler and ... I guess ... I guess we'll go from there," she said dully. Because what else was there to do? They knew nothing, but this had to be a warning. A chance, however small, for them to get together and perhaps prepare to defend.

"So ... I guess ..." Jaime shrugged her shoulders and looked around. "I guess this is it, right?" They'd put together the puzzles and heard the stupid recording. What else was there?

"I'll ... one of us will ... if we find anything out. We'll put it up on the network." That said, she turned toward the door. She did wait in case anything had any parting words, but otherwise ... she wanted to see Mal, and not just to talk to him about his voice on the recording.

Greg paused at the mans question... and for the first time his eyes rose and met Spike's face-on, giving him direct contact before saying, "No. If I had the chance to play God with a few insects... I would see just how fast they would run for me before I disposed of them out of boredom. ...And I say that because apparently that's all we are here." His voice became a mutter under his own breath, and he finished more to himself than the others as he stared down at the finished puzzle. "Fucking insects."
