RP: A Garden
Characters: Swan, Magius
Time/Date: morning, August 10
Location: behind the hotel
Warnings/Rating: none
Summary: Swan starts a garden
Status: Complete

Now that the weather was relatively stable, and nothing seemed to be happening outside (though she had heard about the grief from the week prior), Swan thought it was high time she got started on her project. Jaime had helped her find some seeds, and Swan had simply smiled when Jaime didn't know whether or not they'd grow.

If she could grow corn after nuclear weapons went off, in the dark cellar beneath a store, she could make anything grow. It wouldn't be the first time she brought dead plants, dead seeds to life. This place wasn't so very different from home, but the death had happened much farther in the past, here. If it had been tended, it might have been brought to life already, but it hadn't.

Carting the seeds and a small trowel she'd found in the hardware store, Swan searched around for a place to start. Moving toward the back corner and deciding to work her way along the building, Swan crouched down and began to dig at the death earth. Once she had a hole, she rolled the dirt around in her hands, bringing the soil back to life before tucking the seeds into it. Pressing the ball of dirt back into the hole, she patted around it and moved over to repeat the process.

When things grew, they should have a respectable fruit and vegetable garden. There was some corn, some carrots, potatoes, strawberries, and even a few watermelon seeds. It would all grow, of course, and grow well, and she trusted everyone would appreciate having fresh fruit and vegetables - even when their captors saw fit not to provide it.

Swan thought that if they were here long enough, she'd look into growing things like wheat ... and maybe they could develop ways to process it. She thought that the fewer things they depended on their captors for, the better it would be for them.

He smiled wryly, then nodded. "I suppose you are correct. I have also not been out much, trying to understand my loss of power, and the necessity of those who abducted us in steeling some of my items." He sighed but strove to keep a smile up, feeling a mite bit better.

He smiled a little more in answer to her smile.

"You are wise, especially for one of your age, and kind. Thank you. Both for the work, and the words."

"You should meet more of the people," Swan suggested, even as she realized the hypocrisy in the statement. She herself hadn't really made any efforts to socialize, aside from occasionally talking to Lily at breakfast, when no one else was there.

"I guess we all should," she reflected. "I don't think any of us are getting out of here alone ... without the help of others." Maybe that was the point. Maybe once they all learned to work together, they'd find a way out.

But she wasn't sure that was true. It would likely give them a better chance at it, though.

He paused then nodded. "I suppose I should. Perhaps we can do so... sometime soon? I know little of get-togethers or of social things, but mayhap such a thing would be a good idea."

He had seen, he thought, some of the others' social ideas, but had been too much caught up in himself for them. Now... well, maybe now he could attend such.

Swan nodded slightly. "Maybe we could even ... start one ourselves," she suggested. Everything else seemed to be suggested by other people, or run by other people, but she hadn't seen anything go up lately.

Maybe people were busy, or just ... involved in their own little groups. Maybe it was too late to break into anyone's group. She'd always been content to be her own group, but ... she couldn't get out of here by herself.

"Or I guess wait and see if someone has another ... group invitation and go join them."

He blinked, then opened his mouth, and closed it again. He looked down at the garden, then up at her and slowly grinned. "Mayhap so. If two strangers can work on a garden, why not on other things."

He nodded, thoughtful.

"I think I would enjoy it. Especially with new friends like you to start."

Swan smiled softly up to him. Maybe, if she thought about it, or got up the nerve to do it, she'd post something in the network about a get-together.

But she doubted she'd find the nerve to do it alone.

Smiling again to him, Swan shifted down a little to start on a new row, carefully working the seeds and the dirt. She knew she'd want to go in soon; this was tiring work. But she could keep it up a bit longer, and keep the man company. Or let him keep her company; truthfully, she wasn't sure which way it was.

He turned back to working, softening dirt, breaking it up, after a few moments, he paused and then restarted on a new row, making sure the ground was well broken for her.

He glanced at her as he worked. She was nice, and warm, and friendly. In truth, women were a mystery to him, but he had found in her a kindred spirit. And he grinned at the thought, and at her.

"I have forgotten the work it takes to do a garden, even as it feels good. And I forgot to ask, what plants are we planting?"

Swan gestured to the rows she'd done already. "Corn here," she said before pointing off to another area. "Carrots and potatoes there. And there," she added as she pointed somewhere else. "Watermelon and strawberries. It was all that Jaime could find for me, and there aren't many watermelon seeds ... but they should grow all right."

She wondered if there'd be a chance for more seeds somewhere else, somewhere later down the line, but she wasn't going to hold her breath about it.

"She said Lily had some ... some herbs or some plants or something, but I didn't know her well enough to ask if I could have it to get the seeds out of it." If, of course, the plant even had seeds.

"Herbs? Hmmm. Maybe I should ask her as well. Herbalism was part of my training back home. Many medicines and minor magics rely on them... and they could be useful in this often strange place." He thought of Woundhealer, and Coldbane, and even simple Hearth, all which were good for helping those in need.

He'd definitely consider talking to this Lily. He smiled wider at Swan.

"Would it be asking too much if I helped tend the plants as they grow? I do not wish to interfere in what is your project."

"I don't know that she had very many. It was enough to make a potion, I think, according to what Jaime said. Butt if she wasn't going to use them, we might be able to," Swan agreed.

She hesitated a little at this question. They grew fast once they started, but they still could use tending. Or guarding. "You can," she said finally. "They'll grow quickly ... that's just how ... how things are, when I wake them up. But if you wanted to prune the weeds or watch them to make sure no one bothered them, that would be all right."

She really wouldn't mind if he pruned the weeds. weeds were still alive, and they made hurting noises when they were plucked. She didn't like to do it.

He nodded eagerly, glad she did not mind. "I have the time. I definitely can use some of it to come out here and see and tend them. I'd be honored."

He smiled at her. Without hesitation, he stretched out a dirty hand to her. "Agreed, milady, and thank you."

Swan laughed quietly as she reached her own dirty hand out to shake his. "Well, all right then," she said quietly before she smiled and turned her attention back to the dirt, content enough to work quietly with him until one or both of them decided to call it break time.

"The first time I did this," Swan said softly. "For more than just one tree ... the ground was frozen, and it was night time. I was blind ..." She hesitated, uncertain she wanted to get into the story of the Job's Mask and how it had changed all of them. Deciding to just leave it at that, she continued.

"I tore up my hands, and would have frozen to death if Mule hadn't found me and laid down with me." She smiled a little sadly as she fondly recalled the swaybacked paint horse. "He was a horse," she clarified. "Josh just called him Mule because he was so homely."

He gladly shook her hand, then worked quietly alongside her. His thoughts kept him merrily working until she spoke and he canted an ear to listen.

He winced as she spoke of her wounds. "I had a companion horse much of my life. It's good to have such, and I am glad you did not perish that day, for that would have stolen this hour from me, a true shame, indeed."

"He was brave," Swan said quietly. "We found him ... Josh and I found him not too long after we started out, and ... he stayed with us. Him and Killer." She smiled fondly, if sadly, at the memory of the little terrier. "He was a dog ... a little thing, but he helped save us, too, when we were attacked by mountain lions."

Well, 'we' was overstretching a bit. She'd been in the wagon with her head ensconced in the heavy growth, and she hadn't even known about Killer's death until after they'd arrived at Mary's Rest.

Shaking out of the memories, she studied the dirt. "What was your horse's name?"

He listened to her story quietly, and nodded. She told it well. Her animals seemed to have been valiant.

"You honor them. You do well by them."

He smiled softly as she spoke again. "He was Ginnimore, named after a brave friend. He carried me through much good and bad, and strove to save me even to the end. To his end." He smiled in sad remembrance.

"I'm glad you had two such in your lives. Truly the Gods blessed you."

Swan nodded, able to relate. Mule had died in a firefight, brought down on top of her before she was wrested free ... and with his dying breaths, he had tried to move off of her, to help her. That, though, she didn't feel any pressing desire to share.

"That's a nice name," she said, speculating over the differences between Mule and Killer, and Ginnimore. She was a little amused and she couldn't exactly pinpoint why.

"I think there must have been ... someone watching over me. Through them, through Josh and Sister, and later, through Robin. I wouldn't have lived without them."

He nodded. "There are always forces and gods watching over us, sometimes for good and sometimes for ill. But it is good to have friends to do so as well."

He had been lucky enough to have Huma, even if they were separated in the end. Maybe when he got back he could help Huma again.

"Or dark forces driving some," she replied softly. "We walked through the army's camp after their leader had died. There was nothing there but darkness, greed, hate ..." Swan shuddered to think of it. "Corruption in it's most base form."

Sometimes, in the hours just before sleep, or just before waking from a dream, Swan did wonder if they truly had been the pawns of some larger, higher forces. If everything had been guided together, if things had taken as long as they did because they had to take that long.

Swan sighed, and pushed away the heavier, darker thoughts as she worked the soil and brought it to life.

He nodded. "There are always those who walk the paths of darkness. I found myself there once, but was helped to find the way out by a friend who would not let me die in infamy."

He smiled wryly. "Hopefully, there will be few such here."

"The ones who took us," she began. "Surely they're the sort to ... to walk a darker path," Swan offered uncertainly. Who but people with dark hearts would kidnap people for their own ends? Or not obvious ends at all?

But what was to make anyone here think that their kidnappers were discriminating between light and dark personalities? Between criminals and heroes?

"Them, yes..." His expression grew darker. "They are not ones I would want to meet any time soon. Not until we are ready to end this, once and for all." He spoke softly, magic coiled in his words as his will focused. And as it did, magic shimmered a little on his skin, almost a remnant of the dancing lights spell. While his power might be dampened, even quieted. Magius was still a wizard of incredible will, and where he was, magic flowed.

He breathed quieter, hanging his head for a second. Then he lifted it and nodded to her. "We will make our own path, I think, each of us, and together, we will make that pathway lead out of here."

"We will," she said softly. Her skin prickled a little and she glanced back to see him shimmering slightly. She supposed that must be his magic, and she wondered if hers would ever manifest in a visible way ... but she didn't think it would. Not truly.

Exhaling softly, Swan rocked back before she pushed up to her feet. She brushed off her hands as well as she could and surveyed her work. She hadn't done as much as she'd wanted, but she'd be better after a little break and maybe a snack.

"I think I'm going to head inside and clean up a bit," she said to him. It was both an announcement and an invitation; if he was inclined to follow, she wouldn't mind chatting with him more, but if he wanted to stay out here and work in her stead and be alone with his own thoughts ... she was fine with that as well.

He looked down at his dirty hands and dirty robes and chuckled. "I should perhaps do the same. Would you mind some accompaniment?" He liked her converse, and her attitude. Diverse though it was from his own, it was intriguing.

He stretched, rising, and offered her a wry smile.

Swan nodded. "I wouldn't mind," she assured him before she stomped some of the dirt off her shoes before she started toward the back door. Drawing it open, she stepped into the hotel and moved to the kitchen sink to wash off her hands, scrubbing under her nails, with soap, before drying her hands off.

Stretching up by one of the cabinets, she got down a box of crackers and tipped some onto a plate before carrying it to the table; he could share or not share as he was so inclined.

Hr brushed himself off, then rose and nodded, following her. The way in reminded him of a Monastery he had once passed through, and the strange monks of Majere there. And speaking of... "Have you traveled much, before coming here?" He could not remember if she had said so or not.

He stepped up, when she was done and washed his own hands. After that, he drew some water from the tap, and joined her. Crackers here made him smile. "These are nothing like where I come from. The ones I knew were little more than pressed bread, and these are... strange."
