Entry tags:hansel & gretel: gretel, supernatural: sam winchester

Who: Sam Winchester and Gretel
What: Sam runs into her on his way to find Dean
When: Not long after Sam gets out of his cage
Where: Romeo block
Warnings: language maybe, probably not much else.
Status: closed/ongoing.

Sam was no stranger to weird. He was familiar with the concept of alternate realities and even multiverse theory but he'd never heard of anything on this sort of scale, let alone experienced anything like it. The 'Researcher' behind this would have to have either some serious technology or some serious mojo to pull off the whole mass kidnapping across realities. He needed to stop thinking about it, the realisation was deeply unsettling and it was giving him a headache.

Dressed in the bright orange attire of his assigned block, Sam left his room and made his way in the direction of Romeo. He didn't think about where he was, how he'd got here or how he was going to get out - his only thought, the only thing he allowed himself to focus on, was finding his brother. He had no doubt that once he did that they'd be able to figure everything else out like they always did.

He was so focussed on his task that he almost barrelled straight into someone heading out as he entered the block. "Wow, sorry. I should've been more careful. You alright?"

Little did Sam know that the person he almost tripped over was almost as lost as him. Gretel hadn't slept since she woke up behind the metal grate door of a cage in a room brighter than any she had seen in her life. Stripped of everything (including her weapons, clothing, and twin brother) had been equally jarring, and it hadn't gotten any better since.

Three days at this point, maybe more- it was getting hard to tell since her only rest came with exhaustion. So far she managed to get a vague layout of the compound, meet a few people, and get slightly better acquainted with the strange fashion they insist she wear.

Today, she was taking her mother's Grimoire to the library to see if anything could be matched or cross referenced, regarding the different times and worlds. She doubted it greatly, but what the hell else could she do?

It took her mind off Hansel's absence for a little while. So did nearly being trampled by a half-giant dressed like a carrot.

Gretel caught her breath, blinking up at him with the spell book clutched hard to her chest, caught off guard by more than just his sudden appearance.

"Likewise," she managed to speak, sizing him up from curiosity, and obvious caution. He didn't belong in this part of the compound, by his clothes, but wore the same color as Kylo. "Are you... Lost?"

Sam took a half step back, noticing the obvious signs of exhaustion and a definite air of anxiety surrounding the young woman he'd just about knocked down. He reasoned she was probably new here too and was finding the adjustment a bit of a struggle. The book she was clutching to her chest also caught his eye. Books often caught Sam's attention purely because of genuine interest in the written word but this was different. It was old for starters, aged parchment pages bound in real leather - at least it looked like leather. Something in his gut told him this was no ordinary book.

His eyebrows raised at her question and he glanced around the hall briefly. "Uh, I hope not. Not yet anyway. This is Romeo right? I'm trying to find my brother, Dean." Sam gave her a small smile and offered his hand in greeting. "My names Sam Winchester."

She saw him eyeing her book; it was impossible not to notice, mostly because of the spark of recognition in his eyes. It wasn't just pure curiosity: he had an idea of what it was.

She quickly wondered if that should worry her.

"This is Romeo," she confirmed, keeping her shoulders straight despite how tired she was. A small amount of that initial tension eased off when he explained his presence. She recognized the name.

"Dean... The one from the American colonies who likes plaid," she clarified with a small questioning look. "I believe his room is... there."

After a look over her shoulder and a point in the general direction with her free hand, she then used it to accept his greeting, hands to wrists instead of palms. She no longer had her gauntlets, and he had nothing to hide daggers in, but habit was habit. "My name is Gretel."

Sam smirked slightly, that was a random assortment of facts about his brother. And yet somehow an accurate description. He laughed softly. "Yeah, that's him." His gaze followed the direction that she pointed in and he nodded once. "Thanks, Gretel." He said as he let go of her wrist.

He was aware that a minute ago they had both been kind of in a hurry but he didn't want to just run off on her. Especially considering his initial impression that she seemed a little distressed. Maybe she'd just want to be on her way but something made him ask "Have you been here long?" So that she at least had the option to stay and talk for a bit if she needed or wanted it.

Just as he started for his destination in one direction, so had she in the other, until he wavered in the corner of her eye. Gretel paused, watching him as she placed her back against the doorway, a look of subdued confusion on her face. If she had just found out her brother was nearby- or at least, possibly so, very little would have stopped her. Even tired as she was.

Maybe he was just a rare gentleman. Maybe he and he brother didn't get on very well. She wasn't in the mindset to guess at a complete stranger at the moment.

"A few days... I think," she answered his inquiry with raw honesty. "Hard to tell. Adjusting to this place hasn't been particularly easy. I take it you found yourself in a cage not long ago as well..."

Sam nodded. "A few hours ago actually. Waking up weird places isn't a totally new experience for me. Nothing like this but....it makes it a little easier to take I guess." He shrugged. His brother was here that was really the main thing that grounded him. Truth was if Dean hadn't been there then Sam wasn't sure how he'd have reacted.

He turned a little more towards her, there didn't seem to be any urgency in getting to Dean considering he'd already told Sam that he hadn't found a way out of here. It meant they were going to be stuck here for a while and the current situation didn't seem to be immediately threatening if Dean wanted to go to the beach so he figured he could take a little time. He still wasn't sure if she could though.

"Did you....you were on your way somewhere when I practically ran you over, am I holding you up?"

Gretel was listening to more than just the words; scanning everything he said for any scrap of familiar context might help her figure out why she was here with the rest of them. So far, no one she'd read up on or talked to were what could be called 'normal'- not for her time, or theirs. All were extraordinary in some way. It made some sense, if they were being collected for study like rare animals.

So how were Sam and his brother extraordinary... Besides one being part giant.

"I was going to the library," she told him, paying close attention to his expression. "It's a long shot, but I want to research any connections between this place and where I came from." To show her point, the arm holding the Grimoire hoisted it lightly.

"You...know what this is, don't you..."

For the first time Sam's expression shifted slightly, from mild and friendly to something more scrutinising. It wasn't quite a frown but it was something more serious than the light tone he had displayed up to now. He nodded at her question, his eyes never leaving the book in her hands - especially now he could get a better look at it.

"Yes." He said eventually. "Or at least I know what I think it is. What it looks like to me." He wasn't sure how she'd known, maybe she'd seen the recognition in his eyes when he spotted it, but whatever the reason if she had opened it up to conversation then he wanted to satisfy his curiousity. He was under no illusion that part of the reason he had lingered was to do with that book.

"It looks like a grimoire." He clarified. His gaze flicked from the book to her eyes, searching for a reaction to the next question he posed. "Where did you get it?"

She gave him as little actual reaction in her expression as she could temper; while honest in the fact that she was combing his reaction for something she should be wary of, there was little else to be discerned from her stoic mouth and tired eyes. The fact that he called it by name opened a whole new host of possibilities, some of which she might have to tread carefully around.

She and Hansel were not always looked well upon by other hunters of their time, especially since nearly one hundred percent of them now knew Gretel herself was a witch.

But that was back home...

"Only a few types of people know what a grimoire is-" she started with the slightest tilt of her head, choosing to not answer his question for the time being- not until she got a better read of him. "The witches that write them, and those that hunt them down. I happen to fall into both categories."

She paused just long enough to watch his reaction.

"Which are you."

Sam's brow furrowed. "Wait, so you're a witch that hunts witches?" He said, employing a similar tactic of deflecting the question for now. He didn't see the point in lying to her, and he wouldn't, but for now he preferred to keep his cards close to his chest. "That's a new one on me."

Sam had known good witches, those who hadn't done anyone any harm and those who actively fought for good - he'd never known a witch who was also a Hunter. He supposed such a thing was possible but he'd never seen it himself. From what she said it was difficult to determine if she was a good witch who hunted the bad or a bad witch who hunted the good. So far she hadn't given him any reason to think it was the second option but you never could tell.

Although his confusion was evident, his stance on the information she gave him wasn't exactly clear. He exhaled slowly. "The latter." He said finally, keeping his tone neutral. "My brother and I both are."

She saw the honesty in his eyes, clear as the complicated things she felt somehow familiar, even if they weren't yet named. Still, she couldn't pin down whether his reaction should be considered worrisome.

At least, for right now, he didn't seem like he wanted to kill her.

"Hansel and I have been hunting witches since we were children," she decided to explain, but never took her eyes off his face. "The 'me-being-a-witch' part is a lot... newer. And a long fucking story."

Sam didn't want to kill her. He rarely wanted to kill anyone without just cause. He was fairly certain he'd have no reason to, her clarification that she and her brother were Hunters before she was a witch leant itself more to the theory that she was not evil - and Sam was more than willing to believe it.

Once he'd decided they were probably on the same side his mind suddenly registered what she'd actually said. "....your brothers name is Hansel? Hansel and Gretel?" Her name alone hadn't been enough to make him question it, but hers and her brothers together definitely had him doubting whether he'd heard her right. "Um....is that like nicknames or something, or were your parents really into fairytales?"
