Who: Hermione and Lavender
What: Coffee and supper
When: Monday evening
Where: The Three Broomsticks
Rating: Low, maybe some language
Status: In Progress

Honestly, Lavender had missed Hermione... once she'd realized the bushy-haired girl had been quiet for a while. She hadn't even noticed until Hermione's familiar handwriting had appeared in the journals that she had gone to muggle uni (something that Lavender couldn't really understand), or that she had backpacked to... where ever it was she had gone. Lavender's mind was on too many other things recently, and, maybe everyone else was right. She was a little too wrapped up in herself. Not that she was going to admit that out loud.

Lavender had agreed to meet Hermione for some coffee and supper, and after getting dressed in a pair of skinny jeans and a loose fitting t-shirt that smelled a little like Bill, she floo'd from her parents house to their meeting place. She'd been staying with her parents, despite the fact that they were so uncomfortable with her there. She'd done very little but argue with her mother these past few weeks, but she wasn't ready to admit defeat and find a new flat. Lavender had to wait and see if Bill got his memory back, so she could apologize profusely to him, try to change her annoying habits of starting fights and putting her nose into everyone else's business and try to move back into Shell Cottage. That was what she wanted. If he would take her back.

While waiting for Hermione to show, Lavender ordered herself a cup of coffee, holding off on ordering any food until her friend showed up. She was ignoring the looks from the people occupying the Three Broomsticks, rather used to the behavior now.

"Bill will be fine. He just had an accident at work and lost the past six months." Lavender was trying to use this time to her advantage. He couldn't remember her, therefore, he couldn't remember that they had been fighting and she'd moved out. She could correct the things he found upsetting about her during this time and she could prove she'd changed when his memory came back. "I'm sure there is something good going on somewhere."

"Just not so much with you," Hermione said gently, laying one open hand on the table between them.

Lavender raised a brow and looked at Hermione's hand for a moment. Was she serious? "That's nothing new though, is it?" She didn't want to play the pity game. That wasn't why they had come to dinner tonight, was it? Because the last thing Lavender wanted to do was find someone new to push away by complaining about every aspect of her life. She shrugged before giving up her hand to Hermione. "I'm more than used to things not going my way. But. How are you? How do you like being home?"

Hermione shrugged, squeezing Lavender's hand lightly before letting it lie loose in hers. "Not sure it's home yet. Not sure anywhere is. That's what I came back to sort out. For now, it's one day at a time, and maybe I find something that calls to me."

She broke off for a moment to order a pumpkin juice from Madam Rosmerta. "Right, so -- it's odd; there seems to be much more opportunity for Muggleborns than there's ever been, but so much of it seems to be opportunity to be utterly beastly. I did enough of that in school. I don't want to now."

Lavender pulled her hand away, once Hermione turned her attention to Madam Rosmerta. There was enough rumors going around at the moment, with the gossip section in the Daily Prophet these days, and Lavender really didn't want to be the next lesbian they picked on. For sure, everyone seemed to be these days, according to the paper, and she didn't want her and her friend's hand holding to make any special statements about them. Especially after her thing with Parvati in the alleyway, and the scenes she had made at Marcus' last party.

"You are going to have a right go of it these days, that's definitely true. Just don't.. get involved with W.A.P. in anyway. Not that I think you would." She shook her head, not even liking the idea of Hermione being against pureblood. That would not explain her feelings towards the Weasley's at all.

Hermione shuddered outright. "No," she declared, in the uncompromising tone of Severus Snape condemning a Longbottomish error in potion concoction. "I learned about all that from back issues of the Prophet. Horrible. Ginny, my God, what do I say to Ginny? I wasn't even here for her!"

Lavender almost laughed. As if Ginny would want anything remotely to do with Lavender, even if it was her giving Hermione advice about the other girl. As well as they used to get along, Ginny was never going to get over Lav fucking around with Harry and then marrying her brother. And... perhaps she shouldn't. It didn't matter.

Lavender just shrugged. "I don't really think there is anything you can say. If she brings it up to you? Then that's great, but if she doesn't? Don't push it." Although, Lav had never been tortured and raped, so what did she know on the matter?

"Well, yes, of course." Hermione's mind caught up to the probable similarity between Lavender's advice regarding Ginny and what Lavender actually wished for herself; she bit the inside of her cheek, feeling stupid. Considerably less loudly, she said, "I tried to work the Nightline at uni -- sort of a peer-counseling thing? Students would call in to talk things over with a friendly voice. I couldn't stay, though; I really tried, I really wanted to be able to do that, but I couldn't. Issues of my own bubbling up all over. You know how it is." Few better, Hermione thought sadly. "I'm just pants at being supportive. I'm sorry."

Lavender honestly didn't mind people talking or asking about her lycanthropy, or her attack. She brought it up often enough herself as it was. Besides, no one else really wanted to talk about it publicly, and with people like Pansy Parkinson around, someone had to say something. Though, she more then likely did it in the wrong ways.

Lavender really needed to learn how to channel all of her energy into something constructive.

"Was that kind of like the wireless?" She leaned in, elbows on the table, something she wasn't allowed to do while at home with her mother. "I've done my best to get over my issues with everything." Now she just had a whole new set of issues to take their place.

"I... think I've done my best? Short of checking myself into St. Mungo's. Which I think poor Headmistress McGonagall wished I'd done my last year. But, you know..." Hermione shrugged again, helplessly. "Issues do things in their own time? And have this way of not being as resolved as I thought they were? Today I think I'm more or less okay, but who knows, Marietta Edgecombe or somebody could pop out of the shadows and say 'boo!' and I'd just shrivel, like as not."

"Well, you could always put your mind towards other things. I mean, you have been through more then most of us. But maybe you could.. fuss over someone else for a little bit?" It had been a few years, new things were popping up all the time. And really, she didn't want to talk about this. She was more inclined to talk about the baby she'd lost then issues from the war.

"To be sure. Maths. Always safe to think about, as long as it's all theoretical." She smiled at Lavender. "But when I try to fuss over someone else I get it all wrong. Don't I."

It's all right to say 'yes,' her expression said.

"I don't think you get it wrong. I think you just have a very..." She trailed off, pausing for a moment. "Hermione way of dealing with things."

Time was that Hermione would have been horribly hurt by the mere idea that her interventions, however kindly meant, weren't ideal.

Just then, though, she threw back her head and laughed delightedly aloud, the sort of laugh that the socially-susceptible find contagious. "I do indeed. Well, and so. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. If people were as straightforward as mathematical proofs, this would be a much easier world to get along in."

Lavender couldn't help but laugh with Hermione. "Who wants an easier world? That doesn't sound like fun." She shook her head a little, her smile falling into place easily now that she had ended the laugh.
