Given that he was only nine and not even from New York, it was really surprising that he had been able to make it thus far. Landmarks, he could follow though, and he had learned to tell which buildings were safe and which weren't. Broken windows were usually a dead giveaway for the latter, but boarded up ones usually meant safety. There being a trail of blood along the street meant that zombies had been near, and there being the shiny rounded balls meant something. Gun shots, maybe.
So, yeah, he could usually keep himself safe. And following his landmarks -- the lamp post with the broken glass, the street with the crashed taxi -- helped keep him from feeling as lost as he had before. Just one night, he told himself as he crept in through a side door. Just one night and he would be off again, to look for his lamp post and taxi. The further he went inside though, the more he realized that this building wasn't abandoned. It, like the library, had people living in it. Pillows and blankets and-
His stomach grumbled as he caught sight of it: food. He hurried over to dig through the items, hoping to see something he liked. Hunger had been eating away at him for such a long time now.
