WHO: Mike and Kori
WHAT: The first night after Kori is found.
WHERE: Quarantine at Grand Central.
WHEN: January 15 -- night.
RATING: Medium.
STATUS: In progress
It had been hours now since Mike had been allowed to enter Quarantine.
He'd done so shakingly, eyes red and body tired from crying and fighting off whatever sickness he'd picked up -- but he was feeling sick for different reasons now, and it'd been hard to hide it from Kori. He'd stopped trying almost the instant she let him into her arms, and then he'd spent what felt like forever holding and rocking her before retreating away into a corner of the room, pained eyes never leaving the sad soft nest her family had collected for her. This is the worst day of my life, he kept thinking, looking at Leah and the others. He had no idea what to tell them, no idea what to say to anyone, and there was a part of him that said he deserved however this felt now, the strange dark tunnel of fears and horrors that his mind had become; Kori's family had never lost track of her, and now they'd grudgingly let him into this room, into a place where he still didn't fully belong.
That wouldn't stop him from staying, though. Mike wasn't shy. He'd cry himself to death in front of them for however long this took. Until it was... Over.
Until she's all right.
Now it was late, and things had gone quiet. That wasn't to say they'd calmed -- not at all, there was that constant undercurrent of fear and worry that seemed to flow between every living body in the room, a horrible cold river that Michael kept getting dragged to the bottom of.
He approached Kori's makeshift bed anyway, trying his best not to disturb anyone else -- and trying his best, of course, to keep some semblance of a smile on his face. He knew his cheeks were still wet with tears (the smallest things seemed to set them going) but the look he gave Kori was as happy as it could be.
"So," he whispered. "What can I do for you, huh?"
