Christmas was shaping up to be better than last year, definitely. He remembered, vividly, clandestinely sneaking into Madison Square Garden to slip the sketch he'd done for Leah last year, and in hopes of reviving the mood he'd brought her back then, he'd decided to turn it into a tradition. This year, rather than just a black and white photo, he'd decided to color it in, and he wanted to give it to her a little early, just for the sake of it. He smiled as he filled the box with torn bits of his previous attempts at perfecting this picture, with the actual finished picture in the bottom, a hopeful attempt to surprise her. As he placed the top on the box and tied it with red ribbon, he smiled a little bit. This seemed to mean more than the one he'd given last year. Last year's clandestine drop-off had meaning, sure. But this one... they'd come a long way from then, so this particular drawing reflected this; it's coloring was a sign of that, and even its size were even larger. Last year he'd been forced to draw on white construction paper. But this year, he had choices. Looting trips to the art store left him with endless supplies, and he'd chosen a slightly larger canvas. It was nice to think that little things like this had the chance to become tradition now, and he already had dozens of ideas in mind. Next year's drawing would have four marigolds; two large and two small, representing the growth of their family. Would it be too cheesy? Maybe, but he had to hope that she'd like the sentiment. With his “wrapping” done, he sat silently with a smile, to wait for Leah to return home from wherever she'd gone. |
