A nod and a shrug. “Or you can do it during naptime. I’m planning to lay down with Mari again today.” She didn’t always join Marigold for her afternoon nap, but lately it had become a habit. With everything she did during the day, a nap was usually needed.
For the first time in a while, the implied remark about another bed-warmer caught her off-guard. She blinked once, before her smirk came. Wrinkling her nose, she swatted at his hand. “As if you’d ever have to worry about that.” She was far too loyal to cheat, and besides that, she hadn’t met any other men who could weather her temper like Evan could.
“I’d ask you if you thought you could keep up with me, but since I’m teaching at a preschool level, you might actually manage.” Leah raised her eyebrows instead of grinning, but the amusement was still clear in her expression. “And she might actually enjoy it more if she sees Papa falling on his ass more than she does.”
This habit he had of touching her tummy wasn’t exactly new, but it made her smile just about every time. However, the past week or so, the smile hadn’t been quite as warm as it had been. Leah still hadn’t felt anything. The medics had assured her that everything was fine, but she still couldn’t help but worry.
“I knew it,” she said with a note of triumph. “I always know when you’re up to something sneaky.” Her hands went up automatically to take the box, but she didn’t open it right away. Instead, she made a show of giving the box a little shake. Nothing rattled or clunked. Something rustled, though. “Doesn’t sound like there’s anything in there. Doesn’t feel like it either.”
She opened it, frowning curiously as she sifted through torn bits of paper to get to the picture at the bottom. When she saw it, she lifted it out carefully. “It’s bigger than last year’s,” she commented, her lips curling up into a smile.
