David was inherently bad at confrontation. And he wasn't that great at feelings either, so when it came to confrontations about feelings, he was flying as blind as a bat in the daytime. But there were things that needed to be said. He'd done a good job of "ignoring" that text message; Ellie had been delirious, he had told himself. Locked in a closet and hurt and she hadn't meant what she'd been saying. Simple as that. That was what he'd told himself, anyway. How he'd justified the fact that he hadn't brought it up until now. Still, it nagged at the back of his mind. What if, by some wild stretch of the imagination, she had meant it? He sat on the bed, half-reading, waiting for Ellie to come home so that they could talk... trying to come up with something to say; some way to ask her if she'd meant what she'd said. It should've been ancient history, right? They were just words in a messageāa message David still had on his phone, he realized as he gathered his phone up and scrolled through to look for it. After staring at it for a few seconds, he sucked in a breath and decided that sometimes, the band aid approach was best. Now all he needed was for her to get home. |
