Naruto - Windy Days 2
Series: Naruto
Characters: Gaara
Pairing: GaaLee
Type: college AU, slice of life
Warnings: It's exceptionally dull.
Spoilers: none
Word Count: 330
Etc: I finished this up because attempting to write something long with plot is like pulling teeth. Sadly, it sucks, because writing Gaara is damn difficult...and the reason I was taking so long on the plotty fic in the first place. Go figure. Still, this had a point I felt I needed to include, even if the manner it's brought about sucks. It also proves this series isn't quite dead yet.
As Gaara brings in the mail, one of the letters slips and starts to blow away in the wind. He steps on it before it gets too far, and idly reads the front. The handwriting is almost familiar, the ink is smudged, the envelope dirty, it’s addressed to Lee. He rips it open, never considering privacy.
His eyes narrow as he reads. It’s from Lee’s uncle. The letter is an apology, and such things are never trustworthy (unless they come from a friend. Sometimes. People don’t apologize unless they want something.)
As he reads, he’s proven right—it’s asking for money. Without Lee’s constant upkeep and income, the apartment became unaffordable, and the man is begging for help—he lost his job and is about to become homeless.
Every dime that isn’t spent on cost of living is going towards the runner’s college, and bailing his uncle out would ruin Lee’s dream of attending Hinin or at least Midnin any time soon.
Gaara doesn’t believe any of it. Even if it was merely shock that caused his uncle to throw Lee out, not moral objection, even if he did try to contact Lee but wasn’t able to get past Tsume, even if he is Lee’s only family and truly in need of money, he doesn’t want his boyfriend to see the letter.
Lee would never hesitate to push aside his dream for a family member in need, even a worthless one. It’s the kind of person he is, to forgive and forget—it’s what started their friendship. It’s unacceptable in this case.
As he begins tearing the paper to pieces, he contemplates how angry the black-haired young man would be should he find out, and decides it’s worth it. There are already enough obstacles to overcome. Lee doesn’t need another, even though he enjoys challenging himself.
Gaara throws most of the shredded letter down the nearest sewer grate, pleased. It isn’t often he’s able to protect his boyfriend from himself.
