Etc: I don't like how this turned out, but it's helping me work through the writer's block. I wish it had more emotional impact, or something. This came about when I noticed that despite all these mentor/student relationships that border on surrogate parenting, they rarely/never say anything about it. Edit: I forgot about the comment regarding Iruka during Sasuke fight. Oh well, maybe I'll work it in later.
The Hidden Village of Leaf is surprisingly superstitious despite all the hardened ninja it touts. Many revolve around Naruto, (Don’t say his name at night, the fox will hear you,) but not all (Cracks in a teacup signify ill omens.)
The strongest taboo is never spoken aloud, merely understood. Never refer to a ninja comrade as a family member—only misfortune will follow.
Overall, they don’t mind it. It helps keep the necessary distance needed to do their jobs, attachment only getting in the way of killing.
Nobody questions it because history has proven it right time and time again. It isn’t so much superstition as fact.
Jiraiya once called Orochimaru “brother.” Now he knows better than to say anything to Naruto.
Tsunade is careful around Naruto. If she puts to words how much he reminds her of her little brother, she’s sure the Kyuubi will consume him. She’s seen too many people close to her die to slip up again.
Iruka makes valiant efforts to keep his expressions of affection limited to bowls of ramen and an arm around the shoulder, but sometimes he almost lets it slip. Naruto, never having had a family, doesn’t quite notice it.
Guy, naturally vocal, repeats “beloved subordinate” aloud until it’s taken the place of “son.” Lee doesn’t notice the warmth in his teacher’s voice when he says it to him instead of Neji or Tenten.
The younger generation hasn’t been around long enough to detect the superstition.
Sai never knew he’d condemned his companion in Root when they adopted the term.
When Naruto says Sasuke is like a brother to him, Kakashi prepares for the worst. There will be no redemption now.
