Etc: I love cats, it shows, and I wrote a fluff piece about them. Should I decide to write more college fluff along a line, it'll have this title. Hyoutan = Gourd, Seigi = justice, Hisago = alternate name reading for "hyou." Not sure how I like it, and it was kinda hard to write.
Gaara stares at the sand-colored blob of fur on their stoop.
“Oh, that’s a stray. A lot of college students abandon pets because they don’t want to keep taking care of them.” Lee’s voice turns harsh. “To leave a beloved pet behind, it’s despicable!”
He knows his boyfriend likes animals, but has never been fond of them himself. Things that can’t take care of themselves are irritating. Animals seem to feel threatened by his presence, so he sees no need to reach out to them.
They go inside, and the cat doesn’t enter his thoughts until after dinner. Gaara isn’t sure why he takes some scraps outside and leaves them beside the step.
The next day, the redhead returns home and the cat is back. It runs away as he approaches; he stares as it hides in a nearby bush. Taking some leftover fish from the fridge, he places it on the ground and sits down.
Nine minutes later, it warily approaches the offering. Small teeth tear into the meat as wary brown eyes make sure Gaara isn’t moving. They lock gazes for a while. When the food is gone, they both leave.
The next day, it’s Gaara’s turn to go shopping. In addition to the things on Lee’s neatly written list, he adds two cans of cat food. At the cashier, he stares at them, not knowing what possessed him.
The cat watches him carry groceries inside. He holds the small tin in one hand when he comes back out, and it meows at him. The redhead had no idea something so tiny could be that loud. It’s annoying. He opens the can anyway, and puts it an arm’s length away.
It stops making noise. Canines bite into the mush of brown that passes for food, ears flicking. The striped tail lashes back and forth as Gaara looks on. He’s not sure why, but something about the feline form draws his eye. When finished, there’s not even a drop of liquid left in the can—the long pink tongue got it all. He goes back inside.
Lee comments over dinner how the cat is still sleeping by their stairs. He shrugs. A tree rattles on the window—a front’s moving through.
When Gaara leaves for class, the cat watches him go. He returns and without hesitation, it twines between his legs as if it’s trying to trip him in the most loving way possible. The cat makes an odd noise. Gaara supposes it’s a purr, but it sounds more like trilling or chirping. It only gets louder once it starts eating. The artist wonders if all cats are strange, or just this one.
That night he wakes up to rain, scratching at the front door, and meowing. It’s a decidedly unhappy sound. Careful not to wake Lee, he cracks open the door. He’s not sure what makes him fetch a towel and allow it inside after drying off the noncompliant animal as best he could.
It makes a beeline for the bedroom and hops onto Lee’s bare chest. His lover may be a heavy sleeper, but a ball of cold, wet fur is too much. He makes a decidedly unmasculine squeak and flails.
Round eyes look at the cat dripping onto the covers, then Gaara. Repeat as they slowly blink awake.
“It’s raining,” he explains and stares at the corner of the room, uncomfortable and not knowing why. “It was noisy.”
Lee scratches the cat behind the ears, and it starts purring. His smile lights up the room. “Can we keep her?”
He doesn’t like cats, but the empty pages of his sketchbook and his boyfriend’s delighted face say otherwise.
“Fine.” Glaring doesn’t make the cat move from his spot on the bed. Lee pulls the cat into his lap and he feels a niggling sense of envy.
The next morning they talk of vet bills and pet supplies. “What should we name her? Seigi sounds good to me!”
It never occurred to Gaara to call the cat anything besides “cat,” but he says something anyway. “Hyoutan.”
They settle for Hisago.
He watches the cat bat at his shoelaces and wonders what he’s gotten himself into. Lee notes that despite his supposed dislike of animals, Gaara slips her more table scraps.
When Kiba finds out, he glares at Lee and calls him a traitor.
