Voldemort’s cackling carried up the stairs as Lily hurried to little Harry’s nursery. She skidded to a stop as the soft boom of clashing spells shook the floor beneath her feet. The insufferable bastard had stalked them for months, finally driving them to the small manor house in Godric’s Hollow. James’ shouts mixed with the dark wizard’s and then…silence…
She reached into the playpen, dragging Harry up and into her arms, ignoring the boy’s startled whimpers. Unfortunately, Lily couldn’t stop being a mother and grabbed up a soft, blue blanket to wrap the boy within. “You can never get away from me, Mudblood!” The voice sent a chill up her spine and silenced Harry like nothing ever had.
Turning around slowly, she hid her wand in the folds of the blanket, hugging Harry tighter to aid in the deception. A laugh was startled out of Lily when she saw the cauliflower ear Voldemort sported; trust James to get in a prank! Narrowing her flashing green eyes, she stared down the vilest creature stalking through their world. “Harrumph! Some dark lord you are! Make enough noise to raise the dead and wake the Muggles! Nothing like throwing a tantrum, really!” Her chiding voice had Voldemort backing up and leaning against the doorjamb as he laughed.
In that moment, she struck. The spell she cast had no words, only the reverberating echoes of frantic mothers throughout history. The pain and fear and love tore through Voldemort’s body, reducing him to ash and granules of dirty sand. Stepping forward, Lily’s voice shook with reaction as she ground the particles into the wooden floor. “If the devil you know comes calling, do give him my number! No one hurts my baby.” She picked her way down the stairs, slowly.
“James? James!” she cried. Dropping to her knees by her unconscious husband, Lily Potter vowed no one would ever find them again. An hour later, Severus Snape found the Potter family. Within minutes, he disappeared with them.
