With the ground shaking under his feet as he ran, keeping his balance proved even more precarious. In the distance, explosions shattered the air and buildings alike. Despite all their efforts, it had finally come down to this. Chase, like everyone else, knew there would be no surviving this.

Sparks from a transformer rained down upon the tender grass, threatening to set the entire landing field ablaze. There would be no one to put it out this time. He had lost several good friends in the blaze after the last attack. No one had been quite sure how they had managed to contain it. Luck would not be their side this time.

The evening sky brightened blindingly with flashes of lights. Keeping the explosions to his back left him unaffected by the blasts. They were getting closer. Another explosion nearly threw him from his feet. The concussion wave deafened him when it hit, causing his ear drums to burst.

People around him weren't quite so fortunate. As a Doctor, he would have stopped and helped them. In the past, nothing short of his own death would have prevented him. Chase was a damn good doctor, and an even better person. However, today the world was ending and his credentials didn't me shit.

He ignored the pain, pressing his body to the limits. It was only a few hundred more feet to the lander. If he could reach it, there would at least be the hope of salvation. Ahead of him, more people fell, their bodies ripped to pieces by things he could only hear the echo of. Still, he pushed ever forward.

Only a few dozen more feet now. He jumped the assorted remains of the people he had just seen die. They weren't people any more, he couldn't think of them as that. Jumping another round object he refused to acknowledge as a head, he landed hard on his right foot, which promptly sank. His leg slid in to a hole in that hadn't been visible before.

Crying out as he felt the joint twist, Chase fell backwards. He land in a wet soup of squishy parts. Flailing his arms for a bit as he fought to gain purchase, he tugged on his leg until he pulled it from the hole. Already, the ankle had begun to swell and turn angry red. Chase didn't care.

He could hear the hiss of the lander as it began to activate. Having heard it dozens of times before, he knew they were beginning the take off sequence. They would leave without him if he didn't make it to the ship before the hatches closed. He had seen that dozens of times too.

Gritting his teeth, he crawled over the bodies of the fallen. More of the alien bullets rained down around him, but none hit. Even if they did, he had come too far to let a few more holes stop him. Another shake of the Earth sent him sprawling. His momentum shot him over the blood slicked grass the final ten feet.

He caught one of the landing struts. Pulling himself up, he limped along the outer hull of the ship to the hatch. It was already starting to close by the time he reached it. Not caring for decorum or his injuries, he threw himself through the narrow gap. Chase crashed landed upon the metal deck with a hiss of agony.

But at least he had made it.

A second later, the deck plates began to vibrate as the ship's thrusters fired. It would rise up almost a mile, then the atmospheric thrusters would kick in. Rolling over, he sat up to examine his ankle. The pounding in his head could wait, since there was nothing he could do for it now. While he started to undo the straps on his boots, his eyes landed on the hatch. There was a port hole he could see through.

The ship rose up steadily though the atmosphere, giving him a view of the action from above. His lander wasn't the only one fleeing from the invasion, and what an invasion it was. Several of the alien ships were simply hanging there, firing randomly at what had been the base of Princeton-Plainsboro. Their silver hulls caught the dying rays of the sun, reflecting it towards him, or so he thought. A moment later, there were fewer landers and more debris falling to the Earth.

"Well, I guess this means there will be more room for us on New Earth. Or, at least that's what I think they will call it. Intelligent people never get to pick the names."

Startled by the voice, Chase whipped his head around to see who had spoken. The action caused his already uneven balance to fail and he hit the deck. Staring up at amused blue eyes, he saw the last person he ever wanted to be stuck in a space faring life-raft with. "House."

"Hello, wombat!" Poking the younger man with his cane, House nudged Chase's head to the side with his shoe. "Looks like you've blown your ear drums. Can you hear me clearly enough to understand what I am saying? I would hate to have to write this out!"

Wincing, Chase slapped House's cane away. "Shut up!" Now that he had become aware of the pain, it was causing him to focus on it. "If you want something to do, check my ankle, I think I broke it in a goffer hole!"

House waited until he was kneeling next to Chase before he spoke. "There's no need to shout!" He enjoyed the way the other man glared at him, the widening of his eyes when the noise caused pain. Still, he was a doctor and this was his fellow. Setting his cane to the side, he eased himself down until his feet were out in front of him. His leg would protest it later.

Chase hissed when House grabbed his boot. The straps were quickly undone, standard Europan design. He was actually surprised that House gently pulled it off him and set the foot down. From the lack of boneless movement, he knew it wasn't broken.

"Wiggle your toes." As they contracted, House ran his finger up the underside of Chase's foot. His grip on the younger man's ankle was the only thing that kept it from falling when Chase jerked back. "You still got sensation, obvious swelling and mobility. I think it's sprained, may be a few torn tendons. Stay off it for a few days, you should be fine."

"If we live that long." Chase pointed towards the hatch.

Five of the alien saucers were obviously following them.

Glancing over his shoulder, House saw them approaching and snorted. "I told Admiral Twins not to paint the red cross on the side of these things. It only encourages target practice."

A ding announced the voice of the pilot from above them. "All hands, brace for immediate jump. We are going in hot!"

"Oh good, I always enjoy expelling my guts." Dragging his bum leg, House spun around and matched Chase's position so they could both watch out the hatch.

The saucers were closing in on them.

"Do you think we will make it?" Chase inched his fingers across the deck to take House by the hand. If there wasn't much time left, he didn't want it to be spent alone. That thought nearly caused him to let go, but he held on.

"There are four landers between us and them, that gives us pretty good odds." House had to look down twice to confirm the other man was indeed holding his hand. Shaking his head, he went back to watching the encroaching aliens.

A second later, both men were wincing away as a brilliant flash of light filled the port hole.

More sensing rather than knowing that it was passing, House looked back. For the first time, he was absolutely speechless.

Where had been the retreating Earth, now only a glowing mass of debris remained. Huge chunks came hurtling towards them. First, one, then two, three, four, and finally five flashes as the alien saucers were destroyed by the blast wave.

"Guess our odds just went up." Chase smirked. He had finally beat House to the sarcastic remark.

Scowling, House held up their joined hands. "Don't think this means anything."

"Wouldn't dream of it." Lowering their hands, he noted that the older man hadn't let go. Hearing the hum of the star drive as it powered up, Chase turned to House. "You do realize we just watched the end of the world."

"Is that what those explosions were?" Raising his cane, he smacked the smirking Chase across the knees. It felt so good, he did it again.

Releasing House's hand, Chase snatched the damned cane and tossed it a few feet away. After giving his boss a warning look, he leaned forward and started to rub his now sore knees. "What do you think tomorrow will bring?"

House thought on it a second. Eyeing the way Chase was rocking as he slowly massaged his legs, he found his answer. It was something that made his mouth feel dry and his chest tight. "Sex. Lots of it and in several positions." He reached out and slid his fingers down the back of the other man's pants.

Going still, Chase flexed his cheeks. From the corner of his eye, he glanced at House. "Don't start something you can't finish."

"That's my line." With that pronouncement, House promptly pinched the younger man on the ass.

"House?" Wilson's head poked through the hatchway in to the corridor. "Of course. I should have known this is what you would be doing when I find you." He placed hands in the pockets of his singed lab coat as he came up behind them. "The whole world has come to an end, everything we've known and ever loved is gone, and you're still trying to get a leg over on your staff. You're absolutely unbelievable."

Before House could defend himself, the ship's alerts pinged. "Here we go!"

"Damn it!" Grabbing the bulkhead beside him, Wilson barely had time before the lander accelerated to faster than light speed.
