WHO: Susanna and Open (nudge to Jon and Marcus)
WHERE: The Brass Key
WHEN: December 20 ; evening
WHAT: Susie nurses her wounded ego and, well, wounded face.
WARNINGS: Language, as usual!
Susie had taken the longest shower of her life, unable to get the feeling of spit washed away. She'd had far worse bodily fluids spilled on her skin, but the feeling of Mike's spit had chased all of them away. She felt dirty. Dirtier than she ever had before. The water couldn't get hot enough, soap scoured over her skin, and she stepped out of the shower to redress, choosing another of her nicest church dresses to wear. It wasn't couture, nowhere near, but she felt nicer. More put together.
When she looked in the mirror, she was agape at the side of her face, purple and red bruising puffing up her cheekbone and eye. Her eye wasn't swollen closed, no. She'd been lucky in that. Her head still ached, though, a slight split in her skull from where Mike had slammed her head against the counter.
When she'd gotten out, redressed, and stepped into the kitchen, she'd decided to leave. There was nothing here, not for her, not right now. The necklace around her neck, she dialed up a cab, deciding to take it to the Key. She could use a drink. Some company. But not of her usual kind.
As soon as she made it there, she ordered herself a whiskey, neat, and took a seat in a booth near the back. She still couldn't believe that. She'd been cruel, yes, but she was sick of Mike treating her as if she meant nothing. As if she were trash. As if he felt like he were better than her. He had always acted like that. Ever since their first time. He was big bad Mike McBrayer.
And he liked to beat up women, it seemed like. She'd known about Brenda, but she'd thought at the time that Brenda had deserved it. But now? Had she deserved it? She felt her eyes burning and she reached up to clear them with the side of her hand, ginger with the side of her face that was still swelling.
