Who: James & Lily Potter, open to Sirius & Remus
What: Catching up at the end of the day
Where: Gryffindor Common Room
When: May 20th, evening

James was sat in the seat by the hearth, giving the fire a rather aggressive stab with the poker. It took a moment, but then a log shifted and a long tongue of orange flame licked upwards, bringing with it a burst of heat. The rain still hadn't let up, and was tapping incessantly at the window panes. James had decided that having the fire going, at least, meant you could convince yourself it was still winter, rather than a particularly miserable May.

With a sigh, he chucked the poker back into the holder and stretched, finally allowing his hands to fall back into his hair, pushing it back so it stood upright. It had been a long day, and training had left him with what felt like a rather impressive bruise on his jaw, way back near his ear. But he'd had worse on the quidditch pitch, not to mention as part of the Order, and the work had left him feeling happily tired. It had definitely been enough to have him thinking longingly of Gryffindor tower, so he'd skipped eating in the hall and instead headed back to the comfort of the red and gold common room.

The sound of the portrait swinging open made James look away from the fire, and he grinned at the sight of someone clambering into the room.

Lily had been down in the hall, getting together some food to bring back to the common room. The weather was affecting her mood, making her feel far more tired than she knew she should be. Between rain and the overcast skies, Lily genuinely wished she could just stay in bed and be lazy until the sun decided to grace them with its' presence once again. Of course, she knew she couldn't do that, because she still had greenhouses to organize.

In the back of her head, she was wondering where James had gotten off to, having not seen him in the hall when she was bribing a house elf into making her a picnic basket. She had to assume that she looked a sight, considering the sheer amount of dirt she had been working with before heading back to the castle. Thankfully, none of the plants seemed in the mood to misbehave overly much, or she probably would have been a right mess. At least now she had something to eat after getting herself cleaned up.

Sighing with relief as she gained access to the common room, Lily was both pleased and embarrassed to see James sitting in front of the fire. "I see you were feeling just as social as I am."

James untucked himself from the hearth and grinned crookedly at Lily across the room. "I'm social," he insisted, sliding his hands into his pockets. "I'm just picky about who I'm social with, sometimes. Especially after work."

With a raise of his eyebrow, James loped across and flung himself down on one of the faded, overstuffed sofas facing the fire. He shuffled slightly, peering at Lily over the back. He couldn't help but laugh fondly the sight of her, covered in a light dusting of dirt. "Greenhouse three is still on good form, then?"

Lily instinctively started to try fixing her hair at the sight of James grinning at her. "Well, I suppose I can understand that," she replied, putting down the basket of food. "I really can't blame you, either."

She couldn't help but feel self conscious, Lily aware of just how dirty she looked currently, despite knowing he's seen her looking far worse. She sighed softly, walking a little closer to where James was. "Yes, Greenhouse Three is doing quite well, although the weather seems to be affecting some of the plants and their growth cycles."

James eyed the basket she'd just placed down with interest. "Is that food?" he asked hopefully. He'd had a kind of half-baked plan about bribing a house elf, or just heading down to the kitchens and sneaking something (a job which had been much easier when he'd had his cloak, but that was beside the point). But maybe his very clever, very wonderful wife had saved him a job.

"I don't blame them," he shrugged. "I wouldn't want to grow somewhere this miserable either. It's a miracle I haven't shrivelled up already." He cast a slightly reproachful look out the window, streaked with rivers of rainwater. With a sigh, James pulled himself up from his short stay on the couch and clambered ungainly over the back, narrowly avoiding stumbling as he hit the floor and strode over to Lily.

"Um..." He reached out and gently pulled a clump of dirt from her hair. "You sure you didn't get into a fight with a mandrake?"

Lily wasn't at all surprised that James noticed the basket. "Yes, I had the house elves pack up a few things since I didn't want to eat in the hall," she responded with a laugh. She was certain that the house elves, remembering how James could be, packed extra just in case she would be sharing with her husband.

"It doesn't help that the mandrakes are already getting into their rebellious teenage phase," she mentioned. "They've been antagonizing the Venomous Tentacula, which doesn't make my job any easier." Lily idly wondered if dealing with moody mandrakes was good practice for dealing with human teenagers, although she wasn't going to bring that up to James.

"Oh..." She stared at the dirt in his hand and just looked defeated. "I should clean up. Don't eat all the food on me."
