Thanatos was uncomfortable. This wasn't news. He was always uncomfortable for some reason or another. It was, in many ways, one of the things that helped define him. When he was comfortable, Thanatos felt awkward, which led straight back to discomfort. With Lottie fighting tears in front of him, Thanatos realized he needed a better classification system when it came to being uncomfortable. This didn't feel the same as when Thanatos was forced to explain to a soul that death really was a permanent thing that they truly could not weasel their way out of, and it certainly didn't call to mind the discomfort of the Keres racing into his room while he was changing. This was different.
He decided to offer Lottie a one-armed hug, patting her back lightly before leaning away. If anyone had done that to Than, his automatic response would be to just cry more, but Lottie was different. She actually liked physical contact. Even if he was better off hugging inanimate objects that didn't know any better when it came to hugs, he'd tried. He even tried smiling at her again. "It's alright, Lottie," he solemnly promised. Thanatos wasn't annoyed with her. He just wasn't emotionally capable of handling feelings outside of Frown and Frown Harder.
There was no preparing him for her sudden burst of happiness. There never was. He swallowed and kept his facial muscles as still as possible. Grimacing right now would only make things worse. Philotes was the sister Thanatos could not handle seeing sad.
"That's...very kind of you, wanting to go with me. I really appreciate that. But I just don't know if you'll really enjoy collecting souls once we actually, erm...get to doing it..." Thanatos paused. "It's downright unpleasant sometimes, Lottie."
