Why? [Pre-Olympian times] (tag: Thanatos)
Philotes proudly examined her creation, turning it first one way, then the other. It was beautiful, she decided. Not as wonderful as what her mother made, but nothing could compare with that. It was prettier than some of the things she'd seen her sisters create, though, and that was important. Lottie was littler than a lot of them, and to be as good as them was something she really wanted. Because she was bigger than some of the others, and if she was good, then they'd want to be like her, just like she wanted to be like her sisters, and then everybody would try harder to be better and they'd all get better and better and wouldn't that be wonderful?
Lottie chuckled to herself, very pleased with her plan. Then she saw that one side was uneven, and she set to work correcting that. A few more decorations were added for good measure and she thought that made it even better than it had been before. And it had been really, really good before. But it wouldn't be any fun if she was the only one to see it. She needed to share it!
Very, very carefully, she picked it up, afraid that any little jiggle might dislodge all her hard work. Then just as carefully she made her way down the hall, one little sandaled foot feeling the way before actually taking a step. She had to do it that way because she couldn't take her eyes off her creation. Lottie was afraid if she did so, she might drop it. That would probably make her cry, because then it would have been ruined before anybody else could see it and how could she make her plan work if nobody saw it and wanted to make something just as good or better? No, she had to keep watching it.
So step by step, Philotes half-shuffled, half-skated down the hall, sliding the soles of her sandals over the smooth marble. With her eyes cast downwards, she had a limited view of what was coming. She saw the pretty table that was near her mother's parlor, the one that had the vase that she put fresh flowers in every day. Lottie always loved it when Nyx used pansies. Pansies were her favorites because they always looked happy. Then she saw the rug that had been added to keep the sound down because the Keres had been holding races down the hall. And there were a lot of them so it made a lot of noise, which made Hypnos all kinds of cranky. Lottie had hugged him to help. Then she saw muddy sandals that Momos hadn't picked up. She saw a scuff of red that she thought Moros had left. She saw Apate's doll, the one that Dolos had cut all the hair off of. She saw a ribbon she thought belonged Oizys, probably pulled off by another brother or sister. Lottie would take it back to her later.
She saw feet.
Philotes stopped, staring at the feet for a second, wondering who they belonged too. Then she remembered she could look up and find out. When she did, a wide, happy smile creased her face. “Thanatos!”
With a couple of missing teeth, it came out sounding a bit like fanny-toes, but the enthusiasm behind the greeting was apparent. Not only because she finally had somebody to show her creation to, but because she genuinely loved her older brother. She loved all of them, actually, but Than was right there, so he was going to be loved even more. With great pride, she held up the mud pie that she'd spent so much time making look as realistic as possible with sticks and rocks and other assorted bits she'd found down by the rivers. Beaming at her own ingenuity, she exclaimed, “See?”
There was absolutely no doubt in her mind that Than would be blown away by the awesomeness of her mud pie.
