Common Interests [before the bad stuff] (tag: Loki)
Technically, he was not supposed to be doing what he was doing. He was suppose to train the animal and care for him, but riding him… Well, he knew he was supposed to ask for permission first. And even then, it had to be for something very, very important. But if he got caught (which had not happened yet) then he would just explain that this was part of the training. Every horse needed proper exercise. Especially when they had eight legs to keep strong.
Hermod galloped Sleipnir around the paddock at what was not even close to the horse’s top speed. He had never really let Sleipnir cut loose. He was afraid that if he did, they would end up too far from the horse’s stables to get back unseen. So they both agreed to run just fast enough that they could both enjoy it. Hermod was sure that his father gave Sleipnir free rein when he took him out.
Hermod loved horses in general, but none more than this eight-legged wonder. Sleipnir was so much more intelligent that Hermod never felt the need for a saddle or bit when they rode together. He just told Sleipnir where he wanted them to go and how fast they should get there. The horse had sometimes had his own ideas and then they somehow managed to work it out so both god and horse were happy. When they were both younger, Hermod had tried to teach Sleipnir how to talk. But that had never worked. They just came up with their own way of communicating.
“Okay, buddy, time to head in and give you a good rub down.” Since the day his father had come to him and asked him to take care of Sleipnir, Hermod had done his duty. He actually didn’t think of it as a duty or a chore. Sleipnir was his friend, not a pet, so spending any time with him was a pleasure.
They got back to the stable and Hermod slid off the horse’s back. He pointed to the trough, letting Sleipnir know he should get a drink while Hermod got the brushes. He got all the supplies he needed and went back to Sleipnir. “Here we go, Sleip. You want a bath to go with your rub down today?”
