Lost But Not Alone [Abdju, 3002 BCE] (tag: Anubis)
It had been ten days. Ten, whole, boring, stupid, bland days. Bast could tell that Isis was starting to get worried. She kept walking around rooms in circles when she thought nobody else was there. Even the crocodile that her adopted mother kept around to run the house seemed even more out of sorts than usual. Fatima had already snapped at Bast four times today and she'd only been awake for two hours or so. Maybe three. And if something didn't change, she was going to be stuck with an eleventh day of boring, stupid and bland nothing to do, not to mention cranky adults.
That was it. She was going to go find him. It was all his fault, and if she was going to have to suffer because everybody else was upset that he was off being a dumb boy, she was going to make him suffer too. Somehow. Which meant that first she needed to find him.
This wasn't the first time that Anubis had just up and disappeared since she'd come to live with Isis. Bast didn't understand why he got to do it, just because sometimes he got mopey, but if she went off on some fun adventure, she got in trouble. Isis was really, really good at doing the lecturing thing. And she stopped every once in a while to ask Bast if she was paying attention and somehow seemed to know when she wasn't, so she actually had to listen to the lectures or they got even longer. Sneaky. That's what Isis was, sneaky.
But Bast loved her. She wasn't going to say so, but she did. And Isis loved Anubis. He lived with them, even though his real mom was Isis' sister. Which didn't really phase Bast too much, because she didn't even know who her mother was, if she had one, and her father was way too busy for her. It's why Isis brought her home. And why Bast had to put up with Horus. Horus sucked. But Anubis? Bast really sort of liked him. Even though he was older than Horus. Maybe because he was older than Horus. Bast was older than Horus in years, but she aged more slowly and actually looked younger. She definitely acted younger. Truthfully she liked being the baby of the family and she was going to drag that out as long as possible.
And she was going to drag Anubis home. By the scruff of his neck if she had to. He might be bigger than her, but she was still going to do it. It would make Isis happy. Though she didn't want to admit it, and would deny it if asked, it would make Bast happy too. It was really dull without him around. She had to listen to Horus being all perfect all the time. He never laughed at her jokes like Anubis did. Anubis was just more fun. So he was coming home. The end.
Finding him might be tricky though. Because he'd been gone for a little while, and she wasn't sure which way he'd headed or anything. But through some perseverance and even more luck, she figured out what direction he'd gone. After that, it got boring though. Because once she tracked down the city she thought he was in, a lot of it was wandering around and looking. And there were all kinds of things that kept popping up that she'd really rather explore. Bast had to work hard not to meander off on a much more exciting adventure. She was only able to do that because she knew if she went home without Anubis, it was going to be day twelve of boring and stupid at Isis' temple.
But when she finally found her adopted older brother/uncle/best-hide-and-seek-parter,
Bast slowly and very quietly crept closer. Not only to keep from startling the children, but because she didn't want to spook Anubis either. What was going on here? Was this what he always did when he ran off? Why was he doing it at all? Oh this was an adventure after all!
