Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Matt Parkman and Daphne Millbrook; possibly Peter or Nathan by phone later on
When: Early morning
Where: Their apartment in New York
What: Matt has a rude awakening.
Open: 'Fraid not
Rating: PG - even Daphne doesn't have time for anything else.

Matt woke up at his kitchen table. He was pretty sure that wasn't where he went to sleep, and he didn't think he was the kind of guy who tended to nod off at kitchen tables in general. All of that led him to conclude that only one thing could have happened: He'd had another Pictionary moment.

The drawing in front of him was a good clue, too.

He picked it up and stood, wiping the sleep from his eyes with the back of one hand. He could see he'd drawn something round, maybe a face, maybe something else. To be honest, he didn't really want to see it clearly. He hadn't drawn anything in months. That was a good thing

The clock on the microwave was much easier to see, and quite frankly more interesting, especially when he saw it switch from 6:59 to 7:00. Putting down the drawing, he tiptoed into the bedroom.

Daphne was holding a pillow, which she must have blissfully substituted for Matt when the vision pulled him out of bed. Matt smiled and leaned over her to kiss one angelic cheek. "Wake up, sweetheart. You're going to be late." When she moaned a little, he chuckled. "Yes, even you."

He promised to put coffee on and wandered back out to the kitchen. Awake is awake, no matter where you do it, and try as he might, Matt couldn't help but see the drawing clearly now. And what he saw dragged not just him but his whole life to a sudden halt.

He'd drawn the Hunter.

Matt groaned as Daphne rolled closer, crushing his hand between the two of them. "Come on, honey. The faster you get up, the faster the morning's over, and then it's more than halfway to the night." He lowered his lips to her ear. "And I know you like nighttime."

He got up. "So. Coffee, yes or no?" He hated the false edge to his voice. He was trying too hard to be chipper, when the truth was, he felt like the fragile peace he'd been working so hard to maintain could crumble any minute. Danko. He'd drawn Danko. He'd drawn a man who should be dead. And in the picture he'd been frighteningly alive. How was he supposed to concentrate on anything else? If Danko was alive, this whole apartment, this whole relationship could fall like a house of cards.

Truthfully, Daphne wanted to bring up her ability. No, the faster she got up did not mean the faster it would be night. Nothing was fast for her anymore. The only time she felt like life wasn't crawling was the few times she was alone in the house and able to move at her own pace. But they were trying very hard to have a normal life, and that meant moving at a normal speed. So Daphne kept her mouth shut. She didn't want to upset Matt.

Sighing, Daphne pulled herself into a sitting position. "No coffee." She didn't need to be wired today, not with the way she was feeling. Caffeine in a speedster was never really a good thing. Sometimes it made her feel like she was going to explode. Sometimes she needed it, if there was a reason for her to be running around, but most of the time it was just a nuisance.

Daphne stood up, the blanket falling away and revealing her pale naked form. She didn't remember getting naked last night. In fact, she couldn't remember what day it was. "Is today Monday or Tuesday?" Mondays were class, Tuesdays were work. Either way she had to get up early, but it severely affected where she had to go and how she got there.

"It's Monday," Matt called from the other room. He'd already begun getting out some coffee mugs. "Well, I'm going to put some on for me, if you change your mind." Really, he was just trying to keep his hands occupied, to shut his mind down from the possibility he might go into another trance. This time Daphne might see, she might find out. And that couldn't happen.

He saw a flash of pale pink skin from the bedroom and wanted to leer and grin approvingly, but his heart wasn't in it. Daphne was beautiful as always, but it didn't seem to matter if all his nightmares were going to come true.

Peter, he thought. He'd call Peter and find out if he'd heard anything. Maybe Nathan had been back in touch. Maybe he knew something. But for now it was hurry up and wait, because the fastest woman in the world was moving too slow.

Good. No stupid uniform and name badge. Daphne dug through the closet for a few minutes. Then she gave up on that idea and dug through her drawers. She found a clean pair of jeans and a t-shirt and pulled them on. She dug around for some socks and her shoes... which, like always, were no where to be found. Probably in the living room somewhere.

And then Daphne trudged toward the bathroom. Normally she was a lot faster than this. But over the last few months Daphne had been intentionally slowing herself down. Matt wanted them to be normal and she was trying very hard. Maybe too hard. But it was important to him so it was important to her.

Daphne brushed her teeth. She washed her face. And then five minutes or so later she emerged from the bathroom. Daphne yanked the brush through her hair wandering into the tiny kitchen. "Matt, have you seen my shoes?"

Have I seen her shoes. No, I haven't seen her shoes. I have seen the fucking FUTURE is what I've seen. For God's sake.

"No, you want me to look?" he mumbled, watching the coffee maker like it might come to life and stab him in the eye any minute. Why was she asking him this? She could scour every inch of the apartment in a hot minute.

Matt grumbled at himself. He was being horribly mean, even inside his own head. Daphne was doing her best for him-- for them-- and here he was so obsessed with his own problems that he wasn't even appreciating her hard work. He grabbed her by the waist and swung her into an embrace. "Love you," he said, biting at her ear.

Want this to last. Want it to work. So sick of everything not working out. For the first time I think I can hold onto something. Damn it, Danko, don't take it away from me.

"Please?" Daphne finished brushing her hair and tossed the brush on the coffee table. She could never find her shoes when she wanted them. Except her red running shoes, the only ones that could withstand her speed when she used it. She always knew where they were. As for regular shoes... she kicked them off anywhere.

Daphne was on her way to the kitchen to look around for something to eat real quick when Matt grabbed her. She laughed, nuzzling against him. "I love you, too," she replied, holding herself against him for a few more seconds. "But you were the one complaining about me being late." Daphne wiggled around, wrapping her arms around his neck. "So kiss me and help me find my shoes."

"You're the boss lady," Matt said, pecking her on the lips. "Let me go put an APB out on lost footwear."

He strolled back into the bedroom, groaning as he leaned down to check nder the bed and his back complained loudly. He was feeling about twenty years older than he had before. Daphne's smile restored him somewhat, though.

After a few minutes of searching, he hit paydirt. He came back out to the kitchen with a pair of sensible black shoes in hand. "These what you were looking for?"

Daphne rolled her eyes. "Don't tease. You lose your shoes sometimes too." Of course Daphne lost her shoes daily. But that was so not the point. Normally they were a lot easier to spot than this morning. Probably because it was such a Monday kind of morning.

Flopping to the ground, Daphne dug under the couch. "Found the DVD remote!" she called, tossing it on the couch... which was probably how it had ended up under the couch in the first place. She crawled across the floor and lifted up the table cloth on the end table. No shoes. She needed GPS for her shoes sometimes.

"Only if I'm still not supposed to run," she said, glancing up from her spot on the floor. Her red shoes, which sat eternally by the front door, were her running shoes. Very durable. The only ones she'd found that could last more than two or three globe runs. But she knew better than to think he was going to change his mind today. Daphne reached up and grabbed the black shoes, putting them on before standing up.

Matt sighed heavily. "It's not that you can't run," he said. "You know what happened to us before. It's just safer to keep our profiles low. Besides," he added with a sad half-smile, "I'm afraid one of these days you're just going to zip out that door and leave me behind."

"No, I know. Everything is just... slow. I've got all this energy all the time..." She paused, steadying herself on his arm as she got to standing. "Well, except whatever-o-clock in the morning it is." She grinned a little, kissing his cheek. She really hated bringing it up. And normally she didn't. It was just that sometimes she couldn't help it. Obviously it was a bad idea. The government had captured Matt, they'd shot her, and a million other terrible things. She knew better than to use her speed. She just hated feeling like everything around her was in slow motion. It got tedious sometimes.

Stepping into the kitchen (the whole three feet that it was) Daphne dug around through the fridge. Left-overs, pizza, nothing she could grab and go. And if she didn't grab and go she would actually have to run and that wouldn't be real great. Daphne threw open one of the cupboards, cereal, hamburger helper, Ah-Ha! Muffins. Daphne turned around, wrapping her arms around Matt, muffin tucked in her hand. "If I run off, I'm taking you with me. Somewhere warm and sandy with bright blue water." They would certainly save on travel bills.

Matt smiled down at her. Daphne was so bright, so full of dreams, as though she'd missed her chance to dream earlier in live and was trying desperately to make up for lost time. "Someday we'll go all around the world, just you and me," he said warmly. "I promise you."

"But for now... you'll thank me for this later!" He grinned, gave her a huge kiss, and shoved her playfully backward and out of his arms. "Love you!"

"Someday better come quick if the future you saw is even a tiny bit right." The idea of being a mother sometime soon was frightening. Especially being a mother to a girl she didn't give birth too. But Daphne couldn't, and wouldn't, deny that the prospect of actually having a family with Matt was enticing. To settle down and get married instead of just playing house like they'd been doing practically since the day they met. But if he wanted to go on a trip around the world just the two of them, it was going to have to happen soon before they actually had that family.

Daphne nearly tripped over the table when Matt pushed her... her own fault, not his. She was used to nearly breaking her neck. Sometimes she wasn't the most graceful of women. She gave Matt a bit of a pout, but grabbed her jacket and pulled open the door. "Love you, too." It was half grumbled, but completely heartfelt as she closed the door behind her.
