Preparations
Characters: Jake, open
When: Thursday evening
Location: around the outside of the palace
Warnings/Rating: Low
Summary: Jake makes sure everything's ready for the weekend
Status: Open, ongoing
Jake figured people would have to be blind, deaf, and dumb not to have noticed the shift in the atmosphere over the past week or so. Then again, maybe not. It was a subtle thing, and he guessed people who weren't out and about and observing the population might not notice. But he did. There was a tension, and it was making some of the more sensitive horses a little grumpy. After spending some time soothing one of the captains' stallions, he ambled on out of the barn. He squinted slightly at the setting sun, but reasoned he had time enough to do a quick check on the corrals and to make sure everything was in place. They were supposed to get the first lot of foals in the morning, and the last one no later than tomorrow evening, but he knew traveling conditions could delay them an hour or a few. He wondered what kind of market there would be, but there always seemed to be folk looking for replacement mounts, babies to train up how they wanted. The soldiers especially. He wasn't too worried about having too many left-over. He thought the palace could use a few more for messengers, personally. Some sound, quiet sorts, and he thought he'd keep an eye out for any promising looking foals and maybe drop a word to the King before bidding started. Crossing to the nearest corral, he rested his palm on the fence post to give it a shake. It was solidly planted though, and he nodded his approval before moving slowly around the corral. Near the gate were the series of rope loops with strips of colored cloth that they would use to identify the foals for purposes of bidding, and there'd be three scribes out keeping track of bids and inquiries. It was going to be chaos, no matter how much planning they put into it ... but it was every year. Granted, there was the added element of potential unrest because of the influx of magic students they were expecting this week. He wondered if that would have any sort of impact on the auction, but he didn't imagine it would. It wasn't associated with the Academy or magic. It was just the sale of horseflesh to benefit the breeders. Putting his back to the post, Jake leaned against the fence to face the barn. He watched the few heads hanging out the open half-doors as the horses watched the world around them. A little smile pulled up the corners of his lips, and he nodded to himself. It was going to be a busy weekend, but he was hopeful. |
