LOTTERY EVENT: Exploring the Grotto
Late in the evening, Kurt Wolfhart decided the risk is worth it, and they sneak out to the Grotto under the cover of darkness. They heard the rumor that one of Ariadne Flint's missing pieces of jewelery had been found there. The Grotto's always been safe. Why, then, are they so nervous? Why do they feel so unwelcome tonight?

But the Grotto doesn't look any different. It must be in their head. They exhale, a plume of steam comes out of their mouth. The building looms over them, empty. The fire pit is bare and cold. As they wander the familiar space, it all seems very barren without their classmates filling it up with voices and music. A line of beer bottles has been arranged in a straight line by the fire pit, reminding them of past parties.

It's so sad here when it's empty. Kind of lonely, even.

As Kurt's mind wanders, they don't at first see what's approaching. Dark, small, and curious, it shuffles out of the underbrush... Kurt snaps their attention to the moving mass to their left, and just barely spots a little creature diving back for cover.

Kurt gives chase, following the little thing to a shallow burrow behind the Grotto. There, staring up at them from a pile of stolen jewelery and a Snitch with a broken wing, is a Niffler!

"Well," Mrs. O'Hare sighs as she stands with Kurt and watches the Niffler roll around on a pile of hay, pleased it was at least allowed to keep the broken Snitch. It seems entertained by burying it, un-burying it to look proudly at its 'hoard', and then repeating the whole thing all over again. "It's a young'un, and take a look at this back leg here." She picks up the little creature, which squirms a bit in her hands but doesn't resist. The Niffler's right back leg is too small, and kept tucked in tight to its body. "Musta gotten it hurt when it was just a baby, maybe by a litter mate."

Mrs. O'Hare has determined that the Niffler can't be released into the wild, and is probably an escapee from an exotic pets trader, or was dumped due to its malformed leg. Nifflers aren't native to Utah anyway, and it'd just continue wreaking havoc at the school if let loose. However, if Kurt is ready for a big responsibility and an affectionate (if troublesome) companion for life... Would he like to adopt the Niffler as his familiar?

Mrs. O'Hare promises she'll help with training both the Niffler and its new human, and assures Kurt that this will be a rewarding experience if they want to put in the work.

Later today, Ms. Lilywhite calls in all students who reported a theft. The jewelery retrieved from the Niffler's hoard has been itemized and laid out for everyone to claim their lost possessions. Ariadne Flint and Katya Ivanova have all of their stolen items returned to them.
