After Ms. Vector's announcement yesterday...the prefects, Head Boy, and Head Girl have a lot of decisions to make. To facilitate discussion, Cecil and Maggie have called a prefect meeting that will take place in one of the empty classrooms during dinner (to accommodate everyone's schedules). Everyone is encouraged to bring their food to the meeting and Cecil has spent part of the afternoon baking so there are cookies too. The meeting isn't mandatory, but this will be the only chance the prefects have to give their opinions prior to the final decisions being made. Anyone that does attend is expected to be patient, respectful, and open toward other prefects. Those that can't be civil will be asked to leave. That means you, Casper.

The discussion will circle around three topics: curfew, the Grotto, and the post made by the Anonymous Writer. Each discussion will end with a blind vote. No one will see how individual prefects vote on a given issue and only Cecil and Maggie will know the results. While the results of the votes will not necessarily determine the policies, they will be taken into consideration by the Head Boy and Head Girl.

Players will have until 11PM CST on Friday to respond and vote. Cecil or Maggie will announce the official prefect position on Saturday morning before the Anonymous Writer's post goes up. Please include any questions or comments in the OOC section below! Non-prefect players are welcome to toss their two cents there as well.

"After recent events, I just don't feel comfortable with students in the Grotto at night," Maggie begins, "Whatever this entity is, it lives in the forest and we only see activity from it at night." She looks to Cricket for her confirmation; Maggie hasn't been keeping up with Spooky Being facts.

"I'm willing to continue turning a blind eye if it takes place in the day time, before nightfall. I know it's not the cool time to have parties, but I think it's the safest until we know what this entity is."

Quinn resists the urge to roll her eyes, but to her credit her voice remains level. "I don't think it's never caused harm, at the Grotto or during any parties held there. Banning all night-time Grotto parties sounds too drastic to me, especially since the sun sets at 5:30 these days."

"Make it a brunch, serve mimosas." She lifts her tea in toast and winks before taking a sip. "Everyone ties a cardigan around their shoulders." Okay, even she knows the pre-sunset rule is ridiculous. "I like Ramirez's idea--" Maggie makes a vague gesture to his glittery poster board.

"I'd argue that it has caused harm. Maybe not physical, but certainly psychological," Cricket chimes in, "And until we know what it is, I don't think we oughta assume it's not capable of seriously hurtin' someone."

"Never at the Grotto, though." Quinn repeats, shooting a raised eyebrow at Maggie for the 'mimosas and cardigans' idea.

She leans back in her chair and shrugs. "Ramirez's first two points seem perfectly reasonable to me, so long as we can choose whether or not to 'participate.'"

"Actually, multiple students have had encounters at the Grotto, even durin' parties," Cricket corrects, trying hard not to sound overly argumentative.

"But, far as I know, no one has had an experience before curfew," she compromises, "Would it really be so horrible to shut things down by 10...ish?"

Casper gives Cricket a Look, then points out dryly, "There's been at least one before curfew."

It doesn't seem the time nor the place to get into Ghost Talk semantics, so Cricket simply nods and gives him an apologetic frown.

"What happened before curfew, Casper? Was it during daylight hours?" Tess asks, because this absolutely is relevant.

Shaking his head, Casper responds, "Read the journals, Noble. The specifics don't matter. I'm just saying that there's no reason to assume the thing in the woods has a watch."

Tess raises her eyebrows, takes a deep breath, and reminds herself that the people she's mad at aren't here and aren't Casper.

"They do. It's exactly what we're here to discuss. Until now, every encounter I've heard of has been at night. It may not have a watch, but plenty of creatures, mundane and magical, are noturnal or diurnal. A magical entity that can only act at night wouldn't be unheard of. If we're worried about safety because of whatever this is, and its activities aren't limited to night hours, then discussing curfew becomes a moot point. We might have to look into something like reinstating a buddy system then."

Casper fights the urge to roll his eyes -- is that uncivil, Cecil? -- and elaborates. "It was evening, but it wasn't night. And it certainly wasn't after curfew. Which is what Cricket said before."

"Cricket said no one has had an experience before curfew," Tess points out, "So this information is new to some of us."

Then, she addresses the wider group, trying to get out of whatever this is with Casper. "Maybe it can be active at dawn and dusk too, just not broad daylight. We should consider safety measures, then, for times when it's dark, but curfew isn't in place."

"But harmful encounters at the Grotto?" Rosy asks. She has a vague memory of Chloe mentioning a ghost at the Grotto, but she was busy lecturing her at the time and that seemed more important.

"If we just mean strange events at the Grotto, or... in the forest, maybe I should say," Rafael adds, "that is normal. That has happened for years. The things we are all worried about those are different. And have happened elsewhere."

"Suppose it all depends on what you'd classify as harmful," Cricket twists her lips to the side. She's still of the opinion that the THiNG iN THe WooDS doesn't really mean to hurt them, but she understands that some students are so frightened by unusual magical entities that even a passing encounter is 'harmful.' Plus, she's trying to prove a point. "Whatever it is, it's an empath, and it--or they--seem to be pushin' negative emotions more often than not, these days."

Quinn sighs. "Still, no student has been harmed by whatever this thing is at the Grotto. Right? No one's been sent running, no one's been injured, no one's cried? There are bears in the woods but we don't avoid the Grotto because they might one day find a bear inside."

"That's a straw man argument," Cricket's inner debate nerd blurts out, "And the Grotto certainly isn't safe from these types of worryin' encounters, so really it's just a question of curfew."

Cricket deflects back to Rafael and Maggie. "Wrappin' things up around ten will limit overconsumption and the chance of somethin' 'spooky occurrin','" she puts the word in air quotes.

Maggie has her chin propped on her hand and is looking at her best friend adoringly while she debates the topic. Of course Maggie is going to agree with whatever Cricket says. "Well said, Cricket! We'll all take a vote to decide the wrap-up time, but I think ten in reasonable. I'm willing to hold off head count until eleven to give time for stragglers to make their way back."

Quinn knows that, as one half of Team 'Those Two Senior Prefects Who Party at The Grotto Way More Than The Others,' she probably cares more than most of the senior prefects in the room. And she probably shouldn't, but it also means that she knows what the parties are like. And maybe she remember's Rafael's 'compromise.'

"A ten o'clock party curfew'll lead to more illicit shenanigans and deliberate curfew-breaking." She gestures toward the glittering poster board. "Ramirez's first two suggestions seem like a decent compromise to me: a midnight curfew and two rounds of Prefects for last call. Of course," she spreads her hands in front of her. A gesture of good-will? ... Probably. "I'll wait for the vote."

Gabi is very nervous to pipe up, but at this, she does. Telling the truth is important! "It was not at the Grotto, but that's only because we had a grown-up and couldn't see it. At the beginning of the year? Levi and me were helping Mr. Elmasry look for the Grotto and there was something there. Something very sad. In the woods. I cried," she admits, sitting back down and kind of trying to hide behind another Ribbonfin prefect now.

"If it's an empath, the street might go two ways, and we might be the ones making it negative," Tess says. She doesn't have a real point, she's just feeling pretty negative.

"I still think it's a despair squid. It sucks out our happy feelings and replaces it with despair. Uses our emotions for strength. It's not a dementor but maybe something like that." Katya felt like maybe it made sense, it did in her head. "I don't think we can rule anything out because we have no literal idea what is going on except for everyone feeling fucked up." Katya shrugged and went back to eating her food.

"That's possible," Tess agrees with a shrug, because she hasn't seen enough evidence to be certain the creature(s?) was an empath. "I don't think it's malicious, like a dementor, but neither are bears. It could still do us unintentional harm."
