MISTLETOE: DAY 2

MISTLETOE: DAY 2

Gooseberry's not free of this ridiculous kissing game plague yet.

Starting Tuesday morning, the mistletoe has largely been scared out of the lodge by Mr. Hightower, and has moved outside. Students wake up, only to find their way to breakfast and class blocked by yet more of the winding plant.

Just like yesterday, anyone who is unlucky enough to walk underneath a sprig of it is trapped in place with their feet rooted to the ground. This is inconvenient enough, but the only way to free a trapped student is with a kiss.

HOW THIS WORKS
  1. Mistletoe is growing like vines throughout campus, hanging from branches and lamp posts, apparently attempting to position itself to "trap" students.

  2. It has not moved inside cabins, but may be located on their exterior.

  3. Classes are not cancelled, but under the circumstances, students are forgiven for tardiness.

  4. If your character walks under a sprig of mistletoe, their feet are rooted to the spot.

  5. The only thing that will free them is a kiss. Cheek kisses or a kiss to the back of the hand are sufficient. So is a kiss on the lips, but chances are, most people will opt for something more chaste.

  6. Mr. Hightower is busy all day, and cancels Herbology until he can get a handle on this. The mistletoe is proving to be highly resistant to being cut, hexed, set on fire, or exposed to magical weed killer. (Also, please don't set things on fire just in general???)

  7. Post your character to a location below if they got stuck. If you're waiting for someone in particular, indicate who's going to free your character in the subject line. Otherwise, comments are considered open for a random rescuer.

» Trails: The mistletoe makes use of lamp posts and overhanging branches.

» Gardens: A veritable warzone of kissing plants.

» North: Azurcest: Enough trees to be dangerous, especially on the approach.

» East: Ribbonfin: Is nowhere safe???

» South: Ebonhide: Of all the houses, heavily wooded Ebonhide is hit the worst.

» West: Coppertale: The safest campground. Just avoid the lamp posts and be careful of awnings.

» OOC - Questions, comments, concerns!

Special shout-out to Josie for giving us the idea for the mistletoe epidemic. ♥

Rosy glances over her head before going over to Chris, because she has managed to not get stuck all day (because she stayed inside almost all day) and she didn't want to start now.

"What in the hell makes you think I want to kiss you after that?" She crouches down next to him, just out of reach of the mistletoe, communicating so many "fuck yous" with her eyebrows alone.

Chris props himself up on his elbows, before finally shoving himself up until he's sitting, hands planted in the snow behind him. "Hey, I hit you, from feet away, while laying down, with my left arm," he tells her, very seriously. "That shit's impressive - impressed myself." His own eyebrows are not saying 'fuck you', but he is staring straight at her, now that they're at eye level, as if she's the only one on the trails. The only one he'd rather kiss him right now. "Does that impressive shit not deserve a kiss?"

Rosy's immediate thought is that she and Sy had learned how to throw a ball with their non-dominant hands almost the minute they learned Rosy was a lefty, and that if she challenged Chris to a non-dominant hand laying down snowball throwing contest she could probably win. But Rosy knows better than to listen to the first thing to pop into her head.

...

Rosy usually knows better than to listen to the first thing to pop into her head.

She opts instead for rolling her eyes, hopefully sending the subtle implication that she could do better if she wanted to. "It wasn't that many feet, and what ever happened to good old fashioned cat calling to get a girl's attention?"

Chris has no doubt that Rosy could probably do better, but if she challenged him, he would still hella compete against her.

"Cat calling is for assholes to harass women," Chris says matter of factly. "Throwing snow balls is merely a challenge for somebody - namely you - to Prince Charm the shit out of me. The gauntlet has been thrown. Do you accept the challenge?" Because okay - maybe Chris is learning that proposing challenges to people tends to work better than simply asking them for things. "Or are you gonna chicken out."

Pfft. Rosy might be a Coppertale at heart, but she isn't that easy to bait. "Chicken out? I've been on the job for two days, Christopher," she says, even though it's pretty obvious she hadn't been so on that job today. Kissing people every few feet wasn't exactly her jam. So many people all up in her personal space was also not exactly her jam. And yet here she was, talking to Chris and not just leaving him to freeze like she'd just done with a freshman outside the Lodge (there were other people around, he probably wasn't going to die), almost like she wanted to be here, all up in his each other's personal space. "But I've been considering getting out of the business entirely. Bad for the lips. Doesn't look great on a college application."

Chris scoffs. "I've been more dedicated to the job than you, Rosemary." He isn't stalking Rosy but he is positive that's 100 percent true. And maybe he likes her invading his personal space. "And that's why you embellish. Say shit like 'Saving lives,' on your college application. Or a job resume. People love that shit."

"You and your marauding band of kissers have been making a mockery of a serious problem, so I hear," Rosy says, probably basically quoting Ravi at this point. "But I guess, before I leave this profession behind forever and go become a lawyer or something, I can save one last life."

She reaches forward to grab his hand, like she thinks he's accepting hand kisses today, like he's a fairy tale princess or some shit.

Chris grins at her because okay yes. He has definitely been making a mockery of the situation. And she sounds like she's properly chastising him. And he's into it.

He will even let her actually kiss his hand. While he'd been pushy with Quinn, he is the exact opposite with Rosy. And he's still watching her very closely. "I haven't washed my hands in a week," he tells her helpfully, but amicably as if this is all totally her choice and he's just trying to give her all the helpful information to that decision.

“And yet it’s still probably less diseased than that mouth of yours today.” Rosy takes his hand in hers and tries not to notice how intently he’s watching her as she kisses the back of it, close to the wrist, which is probably freer from disease than the rest of the hand, at least. And when she’s done and Chris is as free as he’s ever gonna get, Rosy doesn’t exactly drop his hand, but she doesn’t act like she’s holding onto it on purpose. Because Rosy is subtle as fuck like that.

“Well, unfortunately for the Kiss Patrol, you’re free to go back on duty. Get that Smooch Score up.”

Chris laughs like it's been punched out of him. It's out of sheer surprise. Because what a rude joke completely at his expense said so casually - how fucking beautiful. The laughter doesn't leave his eyes while she kisses his hand and frees him. He's pretty sure his legs are numb. And he feels a lightness, in his head and his chest and his gut is tingling. But now he's staring at her with eyes that are lit up with contained laughter. She hasn't dropped his hand. He doesn't drop her hand either.

"I'm calling us the Thirstketeers. Smooch is a stupid word. But we thank you for your gracious help and only mild judgment."

“That new name is still awful but it’s also probably for the best. Riley and Casey tried to wear shirts that said SS in sparkles today because they don’t pay attention in history.” Rosy smirks and presses her lips together and determinedly looks up at Chris because she is not going to blush this time for fuck’s sake, since when did Stokers blush?

Oh. It’s since now. Since right now is since when Stokers blushed, because that look on Chris’ face just… makes her heart jump and skip and beat too hard, and she’s still actually holding onto his hand and not letting it go and is it dark enough that Chris won’t notice her face? Maybe it’s dark enough. “You need a hand up? You’re not strategically placing yourself here to get more points, are you?”

It really is for the best. Chris could not give less of a shit about what they called themselves, but the ridiculous obliviousness of Casey and Riley to the extent that they put SS on shirts makes Chris snort. That was - beautifully awful.

It's not dark enough. It's not even dark yet. He can see her face clear as day. And her cheeks. He can see her cheeks very clearly, and his face visibly reacts to that sight. He doesn't even look smug. The lightness in his head intensifies.

Chris licks his lips and then nods. "Strategically placing yourself is for the lazy and it wastes time," he says automatically. "But yeah, my ass is numb as fuck - so if you could..." He squeezes her hand. The same hand he's still holding and might hold for the rest of his life. His gaze remains on her face, shifting ever so slightly, to take in every aspect of it.

Rosy feels the squeeze, and her limbs go tense and loose at the same time, and for a split second (a fraction of a split second), she completely forgets what she just offered to do. Uh. It wasn't important, was it?

OH. Right. Standing up.

"This is your second favor in like two minutes, you are getting so spoiled today," she says, trying to cover up for her momentary lapse as she stands up and hauls Chris up with her. "So I hope you're okay with not getting a Christmas present." Hand still lightly, casually holding onto his, Rosy smiles up at Chris and goes to take a step back--

Except she can't.

Rosy looks up. The mistletoe has a friend. And the friend has claimed Rosy.
