USA PRO QUIDDITCH, now a semi-regular feature
This is a monster post because I'm two weeks behind, which is entirely IJ's fault

WEEK THREE

At the end of the first phase, this is how the scores stood.

Phoenix ranked in at 450, just missing advancement. Their expected spot went instead to Washington DC. Also missing advancement were Sparks and Elysian Fields, and with three top-ranked teams knocked out of competition, the playing field is left open for teams like Middletown, Princeville, and Roanoke, which are all currently tied for sixth place.

Galesburg put up a particularly poor showing this year, ranking dead last with only 8 goals scored and no snitches caught. Following their disappointing final match, their seniormost chaser Buddy Schulze announced that he was leaving the team to take an advisory position at Contrail, a top-of-the-line broom manufacturer.

Teams Advancing: Belvedere, Drake Kill, Fitchburg, Klamath, Middletown, Olympus, Point Pleasant, Princeville, Roanoke, Sweetwater, Wasilla, Washington DC

Far and away the most exciting game this week was Roanoke vs Wasilla. Over the course of the 90 minute game, Roanoke's beaters took out two starting chasers and two reserves, leaving Wasilla's chasing team extremely short-handed. Wasilla was awarded three penalty shots over the course of this match and missed all of them.

Fitchburg gains on Drake Kill, while Wasilla and Point Pleasant fall behind the pack.

Belvedere did an admirable job preventing Drake Kill from widening their lead, catching the snitch when they were 90 points down to prevent the scoreboard leader from scoring any more goals. Wasilla, with a chasing team still recovering from heavy injuries, scored only 3 goals against up-and-comers Klamath.

In a week of close matches with strong work from keepers and beaters, Fitchburg wiped the floor with Washington DC, scoring forty goals over the course of the lengthy five hour game. They now have a 270 point lead over Drake Kill, and both teams are considered safe to advance to phase three.

While Wasilla is currently in 12th place with 580 points, a good match for them next week (or bad ones for everyone else) could still earn them a spot in the third phase, so nobody's out of the running just yet!

also fun trivia. i actually bothered to read the rules of quidditch before today's match, and i learned two things i was doing wrong:

1) when players get injured or killed, they are not replaced. you just keep playing without a goddamn seeker. which i guess i should've known from how harry's matches work considering he was murdered like four times during a quidditch match and they never subbed anyone in, but oh my god????? anyway so i'm calling this one american rules

2) when you get a penalty, the other team gets a penalty shot. that probably should've been obvious. i don't know why it never occurred to me. so anyway. now we're going to get penalty shots in our matches

this is a Professional Harry Potter Game i'm running here

I KNEW ABOUT THE SUBBING THING but honestly it's stupid to me like if both the seekers get taken out does the game just... never... end??

Also, apparently, the World Cup is a knockout tournament, which really just doesn't make sense for the way the sport is scored

JK Rowling apparently knows as much about sports as I do

Also did you read the article on Quodpot because it sounds like a deeply stupid game it's basically hot potato

maybe you keep playing until the seekers have gotten a nap and recovered from their injuries so they can start playing again. quidditch is a Logical Sport

...wait what

w h a t

i just. i mean. okay. i mean i guess that works better for the sake of drama when the world cup is this big BULGARIA OR IRELAND!!!!!! WHO WIN thing but also why would you do that and then make Hogwarts Quidditch work a completely different way????

quodpot is the stupidest game ever and i refused to have it present at gb. however i like making reference to it because i'm trying to passive-aggressively prove to JKR that i haven't completely flipped the bird at all of her american canon

Qualifying for the World Cup takes place in 16 groups over 2 years with cumulative scoring, and then the top-scoring teams go into a 16 team knockout competition

QUIDDITCH SPOILERS??

i think there's a 4 hour cap on qualifying games now, in case the seekers are incapacitated or just don't catch the snitch. whoever scored the most points at the end of 4 hours wins.

also, the qualifying for world cup is based on a cumulative win-loss point system instead of cumulative score. ex: 180-110 score today; pretending these are professional teams, gooseberry would win 2 points for winning plus an extra 1 point for winning by over 50 points but less than 100. 3 points total toward qualifying for QWC. ilvermorny wins 0 points. (these points might be different for americans since their snitch is worth 50 and not 150 by international rules) at the end of the 2 years, the 16 teams with the top points qualify for world cup. if two teams are tied on points, the team that caught the snitch the most often ranks higher.

ALSO IDK THE SCORING SYSTEM FOR NATIONAL GAMES or International Quidditch Tournament. that's just what the wiki has on world cup.

it's similar to how football is ranked except there's bonus points awarded based on the difference in the scores. but they don't keep up with cumulative scores based on goals, just points earned from win-loss.

That makes Hogwarts' cumulative scoring system even weirder tbh

i know. idk why it's cumulative based on scores, especially if they're going for pro quid which uses a different system. i guess because it's way easier to keep track of? and it's a children's book and it's just easier to explain how teams won that way. a lot of the detailed quidditch rules come from Pottermore, which is geared toward the harry potter fans who are older now and might be more familiar with real-world sports rankings.

quinn would be honoured to find out she was responsible for the first penalty shot. that's very hockey.
