Love is in the air and Valentine's Day is fast approaching, and we all love shipping nonsense so, I mean, why beat around the bush? Use this meme to talk ships and romance and maybe you'll even find your characters a Valentine. 💘

Name: Calvin Evercreech

What do they look for in a person?:
On a surface level, Calvin is drawn to people who are unusual. He's got a very inquisitive mind, and people who are odd and complicated interest him. He likes artists (all of his closest friends are artistically inclined) and unique thinkers. He's drawn to people who provide a counterpoint to how he goes about life and how he thinks, because it makes him reassess some of his own bad thought patterns.

But he also needs someone who won't make him feel uncomfortable or threatened. Calvin reacts really, reaaaaally negatively to threats, and falls really heavily on the fight side of "fight vs. flight" which makes it hard to get him to relax enough for a relationship. (Plus, it's just not really fun to be in a relationship with a guy who's constantly flipping out.) He wants to feel safe to express himself and assert his authority, which still feels like a luxury to him.

And he also likes people who can handle that he's brusque. He needs people with thick skin, or who at least won't misconstrue him as intentionally rude. So anyone who gives him the benefit of the doubt or reads sweetness into him really makes great progress appealing to Calvin.

What do they find romantic?:
Calvin finds mutual respect and affection to be ~*romantic*~. He wants to value their interests and ideals, and get the same in return. He's relatively independent, but wants to be involve and knowledgeable. For him it's a lot about careful balance and feeling like the investment is mutual.

He'll also find going very, very slow to be appealing, and won't want to be rushed. He's nervous, and slow to trust, so everything is built up to be a way bigger deal than it needs to be. Romance to him is slow, cautious and exploratory because he has some trust issues and needs to be approached like he's a skittish wild animal. He's probably going to be a virgin well into his late teens.

Who do they have a crush on?:
Cole. Which started popping up in the last month-ish. He's gone on a real journey with his relationship with Cole... which has been almost entirely one-sided. Calvin was soooo scared of Cole for reasons he knew were irrational. He was threatened by this attractive, intelligent and kind-hearted boy, and put him up on a pedestal so he could then irrationally despise him for being too perfect. But then he got to know Cole, and recognized that not only was he being unfair, but that Cole's... just a person. An extraordinary person, but he has struggles and makes mistakes like everyone, and becoming friends really humanized Cole.

He has his moments still of silly teen romantisizing because Cole is... so unusual it's easy to paint him as otherworldly and someone who needs protection, and Calvin is finding himself especially happy to indulge in those feelings. Cole's also not threatening, so Calvin can sit and work through his feelings in "privacy" because his crush is so oblivious. It's giving him the time he needs to think. Maybe too much time. Hazel will possibly push him to think more proactively.

Are they seeing someone right now?: Haha, no.

What are they like in a relationship?:
BOTTOMLESS WELL OF SUPPORT. YOU CAN DO NO WRONG IN HIS EYES. Calvin thinks the people he loves are beyond reproach. He will do some amazing mental gymnastics to always frame them as so reasonable, or at the very least completely justified. Nothing is ever really their fault. This means that he's easy to lead and take advantage of once you gain his trust, which is how he ended up in a bad spot back in Hogwarts. SPECIAL NOTE FOR COLE: This translates to tons and tons of patience for explaining things and translating for Cole when he needs it. Calvin doesn't see Cole's need for extra time/attention as burdensome at all. It's perfectly reasonable and Calvin is more than happy to detour to explain things to him.

He'd be very private and disinterested in showy romantic things. There's a lot of affection to be had, but it'll largely happen either behind closed doors, or through smaller gestures. He likes to care for people and take the lead, so he'll be happy doting on whoever he's dating. He'd be noticeably softer and less guarded, and willing to make jokes much more readily. Ultimately he's a little naive, so expect things to stay pretty innocent and for him to get OVERWHELMED by even small steps forward in the relationship.

Anything else?: Calvin used to sometimes secretly make out with his old horrible bully BFF and they were kind of an unfortunate codependent couple. He ran away to America basically to get away from Simon. Which is good, because that was only going to get worse for both of them as they grew up. There's only so much they could do at 13.
