Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:! friend button, ! mod post

Yet another mod post.
Firstly, run the button, as Katie adds to the game her second character, Ruby Robins ([info]laal)!

Secondly, the club rosters have been updated at the Classes & Clubs page. Flying Club is the only new club with an established meeting time so far - I went for Saturdays since that seemed to be the preferred date when Angelina posted about it, but it can be changed to any other time if people decide a reschedule is better. As before, we'll be more than happy to reschedule. We're also open to suggestions to when the other clubs should have their meetings - weekdays at 5pm, weekends, or any other idea you might have. And as before, spots are still open for student heads on several clubs (Emily, would you want Angelina to head the Flying Club since she made all the preparations?). And since I'm bound to have missed something while organizing the rosters, if I've missed any name just let me know!

And finally, I'd like to announce that the info pages for Beauxbatons and Durmstrang are unlocked and ready for your perusal. They are yet to be linked to this journal's main page as we're hoping for some feedback from you on how clear and informative they are, as well as our take on the schools.
We're adding these pages to the game because in about a week (October 15th, to be more precise), we'll be opening holds on the foreign students, with a dozen characters (six boys and six girls) for each school. Once these holds are available, the character limit will extend to five per person - three from Hogwarts, one from Beauxbatons, and one from Durmstrang. We already have 2 ½ early holds for Beauxbatons, though, so if you want to request someone before the 15th feel free to do so! The only thing you have to keep in mind is that all foreign students need to be 17 by the time they arrive at Hogwarts, since they are all volunteers for the tournament, and also that Durmstrang will have no muggle-born students.

I've noted down all the information for two of those characters, but only made a mental note for the third since the player is still pondering whether they're really going to hold for her or not.

Who is who? I know there is a Remy. Is Charlotte a one or a half? Who else?

[/nosy]

You know I'm going to end up apping a Durmstrang as well, probably a boy. I seem to view the character limits as challenges rather than as a maximum.

I wasn't going to name names but yes, Charlotte is the half since you did say you were thinking about her. As for the other one, I think Becca is the one who should tell you about it.

Oh dear.

She was going to app Fleur, but then decided on someone else.

QUESTION: how many of the players apping these 2.5 characters know French? I'm always really nervous about apping foreign characters when I don't know their native language, which is kind of ridiculous and I just need someone to tell me that IT IS OKAY and other people don't know what they're doing either.

I speak French fairly well, but I think it is fine if you don't. Just please, please, please, for the love of God, don't write your entries with an accent. That's like my biggest RP pet peeve, haha.

Just because you speak with an accent doesn't mean you write theengs like thees.

I just am a language nerd and would really want to be able to like, make English mistakes that make sense with regards to French grammar. But yeah, I totally agree about writing with an accent. Also I would be too lazy to do that :P

anyway this is all hypothetical seeing as I'm not even planning to app another character...

mostly I just wish I spoke French and am jealous of people who actually do :( I almost audited it last year but it didn't fit into my schedule, and now I'm not a student anymore so finding a class would take like, actual effort.

Well, I can understand doing the spelling on logs/threads, but not on actual posts - it would make the character look really dumb if they misspelled things like that in written posts too, wouldn't it? I think Hamish is a good example of how I like to do things when it comes to accents - he uses a lot of Lowland Scots (dinna ken, cannae, and so on) and Gaelic when writing, but everything he writes in actual English is spelled correctly. However, when writing threads, I make his accent show a little, though in a more subtle way than Rowling would probably do - which so far has consisted only on writing things like "doin'" and "goin'" and using "mebbe" instead of "maybe".

I think typed out accents in logs are fine! Or some slang like Hamish uses. It's things like HB Seamus writing all of his entries in dialect that makes me want to bang my head on the wall.

Ditto Larissa - none of her English is accented when written, but Afrikaner vocal tics (ja instead of yes/yeah, eish instead of oy, oh my gosh etc) definitely have an accent, so to speak :)

You don't need to know French to play a Beauxbatons character. Making occasional grammar mistakes (as opposed to misspelling, as Becca said above) helps, but even that is not important. If your character wards something to a fellow Beauxbatons student it's logical that they'll talk to each other in French (or their native language if, for instance, they both happen to be Italian or from another nationality) but you can still write those messages in perfect English - all you need is to tag those wards as "Private to [name] (in French)" or something like that. In fact, it helps a lot if you do things that way, since other players will want to follow the conversation and they won't necessarily speak French either.

And I'm glad you're asking these questions. It helps me figure out what to add to the rules/FAQ about the foreign students once I open the holds.

I did two years of French at school and have forgotten nearly all of it. Actually, I've forgotten most of every language I've ever studied, even Sanskrit, which annoys me.

As one of those apping a BB (mine would be the Rémy that has been mentioned), I can safely say that I know next to nothing about about french. in fact the one phrase i can remember serves me no use at all 'parlez vous francais'... because y'know idk any french.

have actually talked about it a lot with patricia and basically i'm just going the way she suggested to me... but for some phrases i'll prolly use google translate, but in any log or journal entry i'll be making sure to put a note that i'm using that, because the darn thing is not always super reliable and definitely wouldn't want to offend anyone.

you might want to consider using wordreference.com instead of Google Translate -- I used to use it for Spanish in school and I liked it a lot. it's a lot better for phrases that might not translate literally, and there are also forums where native speakers discuss translation of words/phrases which I found super helpful when something wasn't in the dictionary (or sometimes even if it was) which was often the case when I was working with more technical terms or something (uh, not that you probably will be looking to translate a lot of technical terms, haha). relevant forum posts are linked directly from the page for that word/phrase, which is pretty cool.

another general translation tip is to try to translate your French back to English to see if it makes sense. this generally works best if you're translating word-by-word/phrase-by-phrase though, rather than whole sentences at a time. which really is the way translation should be done but, that's probably a lot harder when you're translating to a language you don't actually speak :P

anyway, I'm sure you'll be fine! I just wanted to offer those tips.

I'm a second-language speaker of French and I would also recommend Word Reference instead of Google Translate. Their French resources are excellent and I use the site for other languages too - and I've found the odd reference to Quebec French too, which is super useful. Especially for me as my BB character will be Quebecoise :)
