Who: Rielle and Aaron
What: An actual ride on the subway. Burglary free
When: Tonight (But you know, in the fuuuutuuuurreeee)
Where: The closest stop to Shear Madness

Cynthia had let Aaron go a little early in order to run "an errand". That was how he'd explained his sudden need to leave and get Rielle on a subway once and for all. The truthful answer would have raised too many questions, and once the other hairdressers got into it, he'd never hear the end of it. Never mind that he wasn't actually interested in Rielle. Seriously, the girl had to ask if wearing heels on the subway was a good idea. If you were a seasoned pro, sure. If you worked on Wall Street, or were going to see a play, yeah, good idea. But even then you probably weren't going to run around in those crazy monster heels fashionista types always had on. It was ridiculous really. It was almost as if they were asking to be pushed over and have their purse snatched. Duh. Common sense, ladies.

He was waiting just outside the shop. Out of view of any windows, so that his "errand" wouldn't become fodder for salon gossip after all, but where Rielle would see him when she got out of her "cab". As if. The girl had a driver and she was probably going to use it. Whatever, she'd agreed to try the subway again, which was actually pretty impressive. The fact that she'd even consented to go again was pretty brave, considering. He leaned against the cold brick wall and zipped up his jacket, wishing she'd hurry up. Brave or not, he'd rather be inside.

She rolled her eyes back. "It's not so bad," she admitted. "I'll reserve my judgement until I'm safely above ground. I haven't been punched in the face yet, though, so that's always a plus." Her money and her phone were still in her possession. So far, she couldn't complain.

"Anyways, what were you saying before?"

"Right. Well, you made it down here and onto the train alright, so getting you back above ground should be the easy part." He kinda figured he wouldn't have to watch her and make sure she actually went to the surface like he had on the way down. He could only imagine she'd be all too happy to be done with the whole thing and go home.

Aaron quickly shook his head, "Don't worry about it." If she didn't remember it wasn't worth bringing back up.

She was actually sort of having fun, believe it or not. She certainly wouldn't later when she thought back on it. But for now, she choosing not to think too much. If she did, she'd probably freak out at the notion of being without her hand sanitizer.

"Right. Well, here's hoping." A pause. "No, tell me. You were explaining why you were looking at me like I'd grown an extra head?"

He didn't want to get into it now. It was too weird, and frankly he was happy to leave it at a slip of the tongue. Obviously, she hadn't meant to call him cute. Duh. That would be silly. It was simply an accident.

"Pft." He snorted again and shook his head, "No I wasn't." He wasn't explaining and he hadn't been looking at her like she'd grown an extra head. Right.

"Ah, okay. I see." Rielle quirked an eyebrow at him, then faced straight ahead, staring out the window in front of her as the car moved violently on its track. She hadn't realized Aaron was the kind of person to back down from something. But, she supposed he might have just been saying something so inconsequential that it seemed pointless or stupid to bring up again. She decided to change the subject.

"So, what sort of 'million other things' did you have planned to do tonight that you cancelled just to take me on a subway trip?"

Whew. It was dropped. Aaron hadn't noticed his heart rate speed up a bit when she wouldn't let it go, but he was certainly feeling it drop back down.

But now she'd opened another can of worms. "I don't plan things. Things usually come to me." Duh. She didn't think that he would have broken things off if he honest to goodness had plans tonight just so he could take her for a ride on the subway. That was sort of ridiculous.

"Oh, right. And this is obviously one of those things that just came to you?" Obviously she hadn't really believed him that he had other things to do. She knew he wouldn't have broken anything off just to hang out with her on the subway. That would be silly. Very silly. Borderline stupid of him. She wouldn't have done it for him, had the roles been reversed, and she'd had something else going on.

"I figured you didn't cancel anything just to spend time with me. You don't seem like that type."

"Obviously." He droned in a way that one could almost hear the italics. It made an eye roll feel like overkill, so he kept it too himself this time.

"I didn't and I'm not. But I wasn't necessarily going to be bored if this opportunity hadn't come up. I don't want you to feel like you did me any favors or anything." Though he was sure that thought hadn't really crossed her mind. "I'm sure you didn't have anything spectacular planned either, or you wouldn't be here."

"I didn't think I did you any favors." She shrugged and looked down at her hands. "Nothing too spectacular. If I didn't go out, Ariel was going to come over and watch a movie with me. But we do that all the time." They hadn't really had concrete plans either. It was mentioned but no talk of what time or when exactly. So, she didn't really feel all that bad about going out with Aaron.

"He also offered to take me on the subway, too, actually." She left out the part where she told him that Aaron had asked first and therefore she'd ended up going with him. It was obvious that she went with him and not her cousin, considering she was sitting next to him now. But, she didn't want him getting the wrong idea, like Ariel had, about why she was there. In hindsight, she probably shouldn't have even mentioned it.

Aaron liked to think he would have had big plans this evening, but he probably would have done something similar to Rielle's pseudo plans. If Amelia didn't have homework, they probably would have watched a movie as well. It felt weird to think that their evenings could have still ended up with them doing essentially the same thing, though not together.

"So why didn't you go with him?" He didn't say this spitefully. It was genuine curiosity that made him ask. Why shouldn't she have gone with her cousin? She knew him better, after all. Certainly liked him better.

Well. There was the golden question. And she didn't really have an answer for it. Ariel probably thought he had an answer to it, certainly. But she didn't.

"I don't know. You distract me better, maybe? Do I need a reason?" She ran her hands through her hair. For some reason, she figured 'You asked me first' wasn't going to be sufficient enough for Aaron. She could have easily said no to him, as she had to her cousin.

It wasn't a very good answer. Aaron screwed up his face. "That's it?" Unsatisfactory.

"Given our recent history, I think maybe a reason would make more sense than no reason." He wasn't sure what exactly he was looking for, but something better than, 'you're more distracting than my cousin' would be sufficient. Even if it were a lie. He was well aware of his ability to distract. It wasn't news.

It wasn't a very good feeling: being put on the spot. Her heartbeat was actually starting to hasten. She wasn't quite sure why. She figured it had something to do with her surroundings or the fact that she was still on the subway, and not at all to do with Aaron asking her a question that she was positive she didn't want to know the answer.

"Because I wanted to go with you, and not Ariel. I generally do what I want." Was that good enough for him, or did she need to get more in depth than that?

Well that answer was too weird for words.

No, really. He was at a loss. He wasn't sure what to say. What kind of answer was that? She wanted to? The whole 'I do what I want' part was whatever. He'd heard something similar from her before. She did what she wanted, she got what she wanted. Rich girl does what she wants. Blah blah, boring.

"I guess I don't follow." He said finally, eyes narrowed skeptically.

"What is there to follow?" She asked, looking confused. He asked her for a reason. That was a reason. Apparently it wasn't good enough for him? Or it wasn't what he wanted to hear.

"What do you want me to say? Tell me what you think my reason should be, because it's probably the same reason you're sitting next to me and not still at your mom's salon."

Aaron blinked at her. Not out of disbelief, but just because he was still processing all her other flimsy answers, "You mean, what is my reason?" He didn't bother waiting for her to answer, he had a quick answer.

"I wanted to prove you wrong." Easy. Duh. He didn't even have to think about it.

Prove her wrong. Right. She snorted at that. She couldn't help it. He said it so quick, it just seemed... rehearsed. Maybe. Or defensive.

"You really proved me wrong. Your life is complete now, right? Man. You proved me wrong so hard, by taking me down here and sitting next to me and holding my hand even. Wow. I'm so wrong, and you provided all the proof. Thank you." She rolled her eyes and looked out the window again.

Ugh. She was being annoying again. Just all... Quippy and snide. Blech. It was not appreciated. At all. He rolled his eyes.

"You came down here alone to prove me wrong, right? And then you got punched in the face." He hesitated, because frankly her attitude didn't make him feel much like sharing, but if he didn't she'd just go on being... Ugh. "I might have felt a little responsible, so yes. I came down here with you to prove you wrong proving me wrong."

"And you had to hold my dirty, grimy hand in the process." He needed a cigarette.

Wow. He'd just done a complete 180. She was actually kind of taken aback by it. What had she said that made him suddenly so annoyed? She was kidding before. It was a joke.

"I never said your hand was dirty or grimy. If anything, mine was the sweaty one." Her voice was low, because regardless of the fact that she was on a subway car, and it was all but empty, she still didn't want to start a scene. And also, she felt a little bad. "You weren't responsible for me getting punched, you know. Like, at all." Even if she was trying to prove him wrong.

Her idea of what a joke was was not much like what his idea of a joke was. With her, he was really never sure when she was serious and when she was 'joking'. It was, well, annoying. Infuriating even.

But, he would make an attempt to calm down. "No. I guess not." He grumbled, lacing his hands together in his lap and slumping forward, "I am, kinda. By proxy. I didn't personally punch you in the face, but you went down there alone because of something I said. So, I'm sort of responsible."

"You think I put myself in danger just because of something you said?" Okay, so she totally did. And it probably was completely partly his fault. But she was grateful for him being there now, and grateful for him covering up her bruise and she just couldn't sit there and let him blame himself. Even if it wasn't tearing him up inside, it was still bothering him or he wouldn't have cared.

"Trust me, you are not that far under my skin. I did it to prove it to myself. And maybe to piss my parents off or something. I don't know." Her lie detection was going off on herself, but she ignored it. "But it had nothing to do with you, okay? So you can stop blaming yourself or whatever."

Aaron may not have lie detection, but he could tell she wasn't being truthful, or maybe he just liked to think it because he was pretty positive the idea would never have even crossed her mind if he had never brought it up in the first place.

And he was so under her skin. He could tell. It was so obvious. After all, she'd gone out and asked around about whether or not it was strange that she'd lived in NYC all her life and never ridden the subway. She wouldn't have had to ask if it wasn't bothering her. But he wasn't taking much pleasure in it for the moment. Mostly because he hadn't intended to get under her skin. So why should he care if it had happened, right?

He sucked in a sharp breath, "Maybe." That was an I-don't-really-believe-you-maybe. "But it would never have even crossed your mind if I hadn't ragged on you about it, and you know at least that's true."

She rolled her eyes. It didn't seem like Aaron believed her. Had he read her mind? Or maybe her power wasn't all in her head. Maybe he could hear it whirring from his spot next to her, even over the loud banging and clicking of the car on the tracks. It was her turn to get annoyed now. She was going to have to tell the truth, wasn't she? If anything, just to make the whirring stop. But she wasn't looking forward to what she only assumed would be a smug look from her companion.

"Fine. You're right. I came down to prove you wrong, and in the process, I got punched in the face and robbed. And I'm not sure why I care what you think, or what you say, because no one else certainly does. But for some reason, I do. I can't believe I let you get under my skin but you're like, I don't know. So far under there that antibiotics wouldn't be able to force you out. And I'm sitting here next to you and not my cousin because I apparently seek your approval more than his. He couldn't give a damn if I ride the subway. But you do, so here I am." She huffed, embarrassed but also feeling a little liberated. "Happy?"

Had she just... Called him a disease? She had. She really had. Way to make him feel like a disgusting tick or something. Wonderful.

Obviously there was more there, but it was a lot to take in. What kind of question was 'Happy'?

"I guess... It answers my question, I suppose." He began slowly, but then wasn't sure where to go from there. Aaron trained his eyes on his sneakers, and sort of jiggled his foot for a moment. He then raised his head up and gave her an odd smile--not a smug one, but sort of a smirk--and said, "You know, you kinda just called me a disease." It was easier to just make a joke. It felt better than getting all serious right along with her. Really, what was he supposed to say. It wasn't as if that had been an admission of like or anything, just an admission that his opinion was valuable.

Really. That. That was what he was focusing on? All of her nerves and embarrassment went flying right out the window as she let out a laugh. He wasn't focusing on her saying that she cared what he thought. Or any of it. Nope. He thought she called him a disease. Which, if she thought about it, she supposed to sort of did. But she hadn't really.

"That's what you focus on? My metaphor?" She buried her face in her hands for a second, then looked over at him. She was still smiling from her laughter. "Should I specify what disease? Or do you want me to keep it vague. Keep you guessing?"
