Who: Cait and David
What: First Date
Where: At the home of the elder two Baines daughters... And then elsewhere.
When: February 16th, a little before 7 pm
Rating: TBD
Status: Incomplete

Let it be known to all that David Bacchus--The David Bacchus--was nervous. Sweaty palms, dry mouth and all. He'd been like a girl, spending over an hour picking out what he was going to wear. But give him a break. He hadn't been on a first date--a real first date with someone he really actually wanted to make a good impression on--in a very long time. High school, actually. This was a real date. It was scary.

Despite the extra time it took him to find clothes, David managed to show up at Cait and Noelle's place a little early. If she wasn't ready, so be it. Waiting for her with her sister was hopefully a lot less awkward than being in high school and waiting with someone's dad. If Noelle glared at him, he had much less reason to be afraid. Taking a deep breath, David raised his fist and knocked on the door.

Cait heard the knock and peeked around the corner. Was that David already? Shit. Either she was late or he was early. Shit shit shit. "Noelle?" She called, turning back to the bathroom mirror to carefully finish applying her mascara. That was pretty much it, apart from tossing on a pair of shoes and letting her sister approve her look. She wasn't dressed too dressy. She wasn't sure where David was taking her and she didn't want to embarrass herself by being over the top. Likewise, she wasn't too casual either. After several hours of scouring her closet, she had managed to find a happy medium.

"He's here already! Can you answer that and then run in here real quick?" She moved quickly (and barefoot) to her bedroom and shut the door, giving herself a one-over in the floor length mirror. She looked good. She hoped David would be impressed.

Noelle heard the door and was way ahead of Cait. "I got it!" She shouted back, swinging the door open for Cait's date. "You're early, loverboy." She smirked giving him a once over. Unfortunately his manner of dress didn't betray anything about his and Cait's evening. Drat. Nothing real helpful to tell her.

"Make yourself comfy. I'll go get her." Noelle headed off down the hall to the bedrooms, leaving David alone in the living room. He stuffed his hands in his pockets and found a chair, trying not to look or feel like a frightened high schooler.

Noelle knocked lightly against Cait's bedroom door. "Ready? What did you need?"

Cait opened the door and pulled Noelle inside. "What's he wearing?" She asked in a hushed voice. She didn't want him to overhear her, lest he think she was nervous. Which she wasn't. Not really, anyways. Maybe a little, but that was it. "Do I look okay?" She glanced down at herself. It might have been a bit chilly to wear a dress in winter, but she didn't care.

"Did he mention where we were going? Or did his outfit give it away?" She frowned. Why was she getting so worked up?

"Why are we whispering?" Noelle asked. Loudly. Hey, what were sisters for? "You look great, and he was wearing... Jeans? And a coat, so I couldn't really tell." She shrugged. It was winter. It was cold outside. What did she expect? "So no. No idea where you're going, but you look great. Total knockout!" Noelle gave Cait the thumbs up.

Cait shot Noelle a look and frowned, but quickly broke into a grin and finally a fit of giggles. "He'll hear us!" She whispered back, once the giggles subsided. But it was too late. Noelle was loud and there was no taking it back. "I hate you sometimes," she said, still smiling before opening her door and exiting the bedroom.

David was sitting on the sofa looking...nervous? Cait couldn't tell. "Hi," she said, playing with a piece of her hair absently. "Sorry for making you wait, or whatever. You look nice."

"Love you!" Noelle called from the doorway as Cait headed out to meet David.

David, on the other hand, was totally oblivious to the girl talk. All he'd heard was Noelle's loud voice and giggling. Not encouraging. He stood up--clumsily, almost but not quite bumping into a lamp in the process--when Cait entered the room. Smooth. "Oh uh... Thanks. You look..." He eyed her for a moment. So yeah he'd kinda seen her naked a couple times, but he could still appreciate her clothed as well. "You look great." He settled on, hoping it wasn't too bland an adjective. "Ready?"

Ah yes. It was hard to impress someone, or put on any air of mystery when they had already solved it. David had seen all that Cait had to offer-- looks wise, anyways. There was nothing to leave to the imagination. "Thanks," she replied, glancing down at herself before grabbing her jacket out of the closet. "Yep. Ready whenever you are, Bacchus."

Not unless she had a new secret tattoo or something. Not really, anyway. One could argue that though they'd both seen each other naked they probably hadn't actually seen each other. It had only been sex, after all. Nothing behind it.

David hurried over to the door. He attempted to assist her in getting her jacket on (chivalrous!), and even held the door open, "After you, Baines." Outside the car was waiting. Not his own--he didn't own one--he'd borrowed his mom's for the evening. He held the passenger's side door for her as well. If the evening didn't go well, she could at the very least admit that he could be a gentleman when he wanted to, right?

It'd be a lie to say that Cait wasn't surprised when he helped her into her coat. She hadn't been expecting it, nor was she expecting him to hold her door open. Could you blame her, though? David wasn't exactly known for his gentlemanly side, was he? Nope. Gentleman and David Bacchus were not words that went together.

"Thanks," she said, pulling her feet inside the car and rubbing her hands together. It was cold out. Probably a little too cold to be wearing a dress, she now realized. Oh well. "So, where are we going?" She asked, once he was inside the car as well.

No, it wasn't, which was really too bad because he was brought up so well. Really. Isabella Bacchus would be disappointed. But then pleased that he was holding doors, for sure.

David settled in and started up the car. It was dark, thankfully, or she might have seen him flush a little with embarrassment. He had a plan, but he wasn't happy with it. But there wasn't really much to do on the island. Especially not in winter. And he didn't have the money to go to the country club's restaurant. "Well, i figured we'd get dinner, have a few drinks at Frye's Leap, then maybe get dessert?" He was steering clear of seeing a movie just because it prohibited them from really having much of a conversation. And that's what first dates were for, right?"

Cait didn't notice his blush, nor would she have minded really. It was slightly awkward for the two of them to be going on a date, anyways. She wasn't going to be phased by his embarrassment over his choice of date activities, unless they weren't up to par with her standards. And honestly, she wasn't that hard to please. So it was probably okay. "Sounds like a plan," she said, folding her hands in her lap and buckling her seat belt.

"At least it's not a movie. Movies are extremely lame for first dates." She smiled at him and then turned her attention to the window.

David gave a short laugh, "Yeah. I thought so." He turned on the car and drove them the short trip to Frye's Leap. He'd initially thought about just walking, but it was cold. And now it was apparently a good thing that he did. He couldn't have expected Cait to walk in heels and a dress, right?

Once they were parked, David made sure to get Cait's door and hold the door of the restaurant for when they reached it. He held up two fingers for the hostess, who was pleasant enough, and sat them at a booth in the corner. It was much quieter there, which suited him just fine. She got them menus and water and finally left them alone.

"This is weird, isn't it?" David asked finally.

Cait peeked at David over the top of her menu. "Eating here, or eating here together?" She wasn't sure which he was talking about. She figured he probably ate at the Pub most days, so eating at a rival restaurant could have certainly classified as 'weird'. But it was more likely he was talking about them.

"I suppose so." She shrugged and dropped her eyes back to the text. She had no idea what she wanted. Salad probably. Or chicken.

Well, that was true too. It was strange eating at the rival restaurant, but it wasn't exactly something he'd never done before. He set down his menu and shrugged. He knew what he wanted anyway. He usually got the same thing. "I dunno. I guess eating here together."

He picked his menu back up and looked anyway. It couldn't hurt to check out the specials, right? Maybe he'd pick something new, for once.

"And why's that?" She asked, her voice conversational but clearly interested in his answer. She thought it was weird, too. But she wasn't going to flat out admit it until he gave his reasons.

She placed her own menu down on the table and took a sip of water, simply for something to do. They hadn't been anywhere that didn't involve a bar or a bed together. She almost didn't know what to do.

David shrugged again, still scanning the specials. "I guess because all we've ever done together is drink and fuck." He set his menu back down as well. That reminded him, he could probably use a drink, but felt strange about ordering one. He had this funny feeling that it would make him look as if he needed to be boozed up to get through the evening, which is the last thing he wanted her to think. He wanted to be there with her. He had asked her out, after all.

She nodded. "You make a valid point. It's a little awkward, but I guess that's to be expected, considering." They were adults, though. They could certainly get through a dinner with civility. How hard was it to have a conversation sober? Definitely not that hard. They just needed to find their niche.

"So, uh. Apart from drinking and fucking, what do you like to do?" She knew the answer to this question, but figured it was polite to ask anyways.

"Yeah." They were starting backwards. So what? David mussed his hair and looked thoughtful. "Aside from drinking and fucking, huh?"

"Do you want the obvious answer?" He asked, knowing full well what she must be expecting. What everyone probably knew and expected from him. He got tired of being predictable sometimes.

Cait thought for a moment, then smiled. "I think I want the honest answer, if you don't mind. I know all about your passion of theater. Well, I'm assuming I do, anyways." She picked at the corner of her menu while she waited.

"It didn't start out that way." He admitted, "I was just bored once, and I thought it would bother my dad." He shrugged, taking a peek at the dessert menu, despite the fact that they hadn't ordered or eaten, and that he'd planned on ice cream for dessert. "I also like reading, but I'm terrible at it. Takes me weeks to finish most books."

What could he say? He'd been a sucker for English class. "Old things. And not Nicholas Sparks Novels." He shook his head, a tiny smile quirking at the corner of his mouth, "Mari made me read one once. It was terrible. Still, that man knows how to make money. Writes exactly what women want to hear." He rolled his eyes.

Cait laughed. "Not all women." She found Sparks' writing to be way too cliche for her. Relationships weren't like that, and if they were...well, she didn't want any part of it. "So what kind of old things? Like Dickens? Or Thoreau?" Cait wasn't much of a reader, but she had to have some level of knowledge of literature for college.

"Good to know." David laughed as well, "It's really unrealistic."

He shrugged, "Anything I can get my hands on, really. The more words the better. It's a lot of work, but it's nice when it's over. Finishing a book is about one of the few things I can claim to have accomplished." Reading didn't come easy to him, but he enjoyed it. "Poems are easier though. I like those best. Blake, Keats, Shelley, Wordsworth, I think I like theirs best."

If Cait had to pick one thing that David Bacchus enjoyed, poetry was not the first thing that came to mind. She didn't think he was stupid, or shallow or anything like that. But poetry didn't usually appeal to a large number of men, least of all the type of men who worked at a bar nightly and frequently slept with different women.

"Poetry? Can you recite any?" She folded her hands under her chin.

The one thing that Cait was forgetting was that chicks totally dig a guy who knows some choice lines. Not pick up lines, but classy poetry lines. Music might be the food of love, but being able to quote a little Shakespeare was a surefire way to get in someone's pants.

"Perhaps. What would you like to hear?" He smirked.

Cait shrugged. She wasn't a big poetry fan. Or at least one who would read it. She really didn't know the first thing about it. "Whatever your favorite is, I guess." It would tell a lot about him from what he chose. "And don't give me the bullshit ones that you probably say to girls to get laid. Give me your actual favorite."

"I don't know if I have a favorite." David shrugged as well. He couldn't very well chicken out and not recite a poem to her though.

He laughed, "You got me, Baines. You've got me all figured out." He clicked his tongue on the roof of his mouth.

"Hmm..." He scratched his head, still thinking. "Here's one I've always liked I guess." He took a deep breath and began, "Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rage at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light."

Cait listened intently as he spoke. The sound of his voice, the poem, how well he knew it...it was just mesmerizing. She found her gaze drifting towards his mouth a few times, watching as it formed the words perfectly, and had to will herself to look back up. If he didn't use that poem to get laid, he needed to start.

"Well." She almost didn't know what to say. Almost. "David Bacchus recites poetry. Who knew?"

She wanted to hear more.

David hardly noticed her reaction to his recitation. Sure he'd used bits and pieces of poems, choice lines and phrases, whole stanzas even to get laid, but never a whole poem. And never something so dark and eerie as that. They were cards he played close to the chest, that was for sure. But he wanted to do this right, and that meant being honest, and that was about as honest as you could get, right?

David looked down at the table shyly--yes, shyly--and grinned, "Well, not often. And no one, really."

Cait watched him look at the table. He looked almost embarrassed. She'd never seen this side of him before. It was endearing, but also a little unsettling. Cait liked to be in control and know what was happening, but David was really throwing her for a loop. She liked it, though. It was new and exciting, even if it threw her out of her comfort zone.

"I like it. You'll have to do some more for me sometime." She grinned. "If you want to, anyway."

It was new, anyway. David wouldn't exactly call it exciting. But perhaps that was because he was doing all the talking and revealing. Which was his fault, sort of. Revealing a big thing like enjoying poetry. Silly boy.

David's eyes flicked back up and he grinned, "Yeah? Sure, alright."

"So what about you? Any secret hobbies?"

She thought for a moment, then smiled slyly. "I've got secrets. I don't know if I'd count them as hobbies. Talents, more like." She'd only told a few people about her special gift. It wasn't anything good like reciting poetry. More freakish than anything. It was probably better to keep it to herself, now that she thought about it. She didn't want to freak David out.

"I'm pretty good at people watching," she said. "It's not poems, but I'm a decent reader of personalities." She had a good judge of character, or whatever. That was a talent, right?

David quirked an eyebrow, "People watching huh?" He took a sip of his water and then rested his elbow on the table, cupping his chin in his hand.

"How do you mean?" He asked, honestly quite interested, "How do you read a personality?"

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]soundsfreudian
2011-03-01 06:17 am UTC (link)
She shrugged. "It's a form of judging people, I suppose. Not really personalities, I guess. Though, that's technically what makes a person who they are, so... I don't know how to explain it. I can just tell how people are from their actions, especially if they think no one's watching. It's funny how much someone changes when they think eyes are on them. Really tells me about the way they want the world to perceive them, and all that." You didn't have to be super smart to be a people watcher. Being a psych major certainly helped, though.

"Everyone does it. I just do it for fun." She fingered her knife on the table. She really just wanted to show him what she could do. But it wasn't an easy explanation.

"I hope so. I want to be one some day." It was her turn to look down at the table shyly, but only for a second. She knew his next question was coming, but Cait wasn't entirely prepared for it. She had probably analyzed him on a hundred different occasions, but never to his face.

"You're a pretty straight forward approval case. Desperately seek it but pretend like you don't need it." That's what she thought anyways. If it was far from the truth, he did a good job hiding it.

He smiled. She had a good point. And if this hadn't been their first date, and if he didn't know what he thought he knew about Cait, he would've said something smooth like 'I was until I met you'. But he wasn't entirely sure that was true anyway. And also he didn't want to freak her out, even if it was the truth. He liked her a lot. He wanted to make this work.

"I like to keep people on their toes." He replied finally, with a small shrug. "I doubt I'm half as good as you are, but after years of being analyzed and a few semesters of intro Psych classes, I could probably give it a shot."

Well that was a tall order. David knew it was coming, but knowing didn't actually prepare him for having to say something intelligent, and hopefully accurate.

"Alright, so judging by the fact that you come in to the bar and drink me under the table when I know you're underage, leads me to believe you're not a stickler for the rules. You never come in with a date, but rarely alone. Almost always with your sister." He raised an eyebrow, "I can't be the only commitmentphobe at this table. But you also don't like to be alone."

Cait raised both her eyebrows. He was pretty accurate. It was hard to hear, but something she always knew about herself anyways. It was pretty rare that a psych major didn't try to evaluate themselves. She'd known her M.O for quite a while.

"Not bad, Bacchus. Maybe you should be a therapist." Though, bartenders practically were therapists. She took another sip of her water, more for something to do than anything. "Got me all figured out."

He also probably could've been a lawyer. And with this... Gift of his, he probably could win every case, but that would be cheating. And he certainly didn't want to do the same thing that his father did.

"I think so. I'd rather not know everything right off the bat anyway." Case in point. Lexie. There was nothing more to learn about there. She was the heart-on-her-sleeve type, and he could see everything he needed to see with one glance over. With Cait it was much more interesting. There were layers. So perhaps, in a way, she was more like him. She didn't feel the need to expose all of herself to the world.
