"I promise. I'll be home soon. Don't worry, Mom."
Penny adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder before heading out into the sweltering summer heat. Even though evening was quickly approaching, the temperature hadn't seemed to notice and continued to sizzle all around her as she made her way toward the library, her SPF 1000+ safely tucked away in her pocket. All the while, she continued to replay her conversation with Calvin over and over again in her mind. He had seen something. He must have. The day he passed out at the camping trip. It was the only explanation. Why else would he be so skeptical of the new girl in town?
Penny frowned as she crossed the street, spotting the library just up ahead. She was glad to live so close to the library. It was an excellent source of information when her aunt was nowhere to be found. And then, there was the issue of asking Sebastian to help. She had decided she would make it a point to keep from him whatever could put him in danger. She would only tell him what he needed to know in order to conduct this investigation. The truth was, she needed him, not that she was willing to admit that. At least not to him. But there was no two ways about it. He actually had a job at the newspaper. She was just a teenager.
Climbing up the steps, she pushed open the doors and was met by the familiar smell of old books. It was both a comforting and slightly sickening scent. She couldn't help that she was allergic to mold. Standing in the middle of the library, Penny looked around, wondering if Bast had already gotten there. He said he would be there in five, when she had gotten there in ten. Short legs and all. Hopefully, he wouldn't just sneak up on her or something.
